Great Teacher Onizuka / GTO (2014)

    Type: live action

    Genre: school, society, comedy

    Year: 2014-Jul-08 to 2014-Sep-16

    Introduction:

It’s the only 2nd season show of GTO.

    Summary:

Onizuka Eikichi returns to his hometown of Shonan and his alma mater Tsujido High School. Onizuka is working on a temporary basis. The problems he faces this time aren’t those of ordinary students. And to his discomfort he meets old acquaintances who know about his past. His image is in danger!

    Critique:

Like the manga the stories are about more social critical topics, cruel, and shocking. Needless to say things have been toned down and changed for the TV screen.

The topics alone and Onizuka’s past makes this show the more interesting show of the new GTO. I’m a bit disappointed about the setup, though. In the manga it’s a boarding school but here it’s an ordinary large school. Of course the atmosphere and relationship aren’t the same. The stories are roughly similar but different, leaning more toward different.

The cast’s performance is definitely better than last time and with better chemistry, too. There’s another large guest cast, too, if only to show their faces. All in all imho it is more reminiscent of the original GTO than the last one.

    Verdict: 8.3

    Cast 8

    Cast performance 8.5

    Script/Directing: 8.5
