It’s kinda funny seeing RPG Maker VX Ace on sale for the dollar tier but the older RPG Maker XP hitting the $6 tier. There’s a lot of debate in the RPG Maker community on which one is the best, but the truth is there’s a lot of differences in the featuresets for the two that seem to aim for radically different approaches.

RPG Maker VX Ace: Easier to understand interface, support for modern musical formats (as opposed to XP’s MIDI only), 60FPS support (XP is locked to 30), engine mod support (this is a huge plus), steam workshop support.

RPG Maker XP: Infinite tileset usage (compared to VX Ace’s 5 tileset per map limitation), larger event trigger space handling (Area vs single block which VX Ace uses), better handling of sprite/tile layering and support for larger sprites (VX Ace is locked to chibi-style sizes based on default world scale).

Both games offer different battle styles as well I believe, though VX Ace’s modibility allows you to significantly change engine components and add graphical flourishes such as “real time” lighting. I already have VX Ace but I have to admit grabbing the $6 tier is tempting if only to really see how the other half lives.

I personally prefer VX Ace but when I started with XP and liked the tilesets and whatnot, but VX Ace was a bit easier to use and to plugin outside materials, though I suck at the scripting side of things anyway.
