It’s about time I made an Utena thread, right? So I got up at 6:30 am and for some reason, my mind went straight to the parallels of Utena and Tenchi Forever! Isn’t that odd? Stuff that hasn’t even crossed my mind! So, I guess I will introduce
Utenaand talk about it a bit (and include lots of lovely pictures, of course) and then talk about the parallels I found between the series and Tenchi Forever!http://static2.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20110629191603/utena/images/1/16/Utena.jpg " /> Utena Tenjou and Anthy HimemiyaUtena is the story about a girl who wants to be a prince. One day, a 6(I believe) year old Utena is wandering the streets after her parents have died, contemplating suicide, wondering why we have to go on living if we all have to die someday. After being saved by a prince, telling her to “never lose that strength or nobility, even when you grow up” who then also gives her a ring to remember that day, she decides that she herself wants to be a prince! (but was that really such a good idea?)
Flash forward to present, where Utena is 14 yrs. old and currently attending Ohtori Academy. With the ring given to her by the prince, she is allowed to participate in secret duels that the student council of Ohtori carry out. The winner of the duels are given a prize; a young girl named Anthy Himemiya, who is thought to take you to the castle where eternity dwells, a place where you will be given the power to revolutionize the world.
Take my Revolution?Revolutionary Girl Utena (Shoujo Kakumei Utena) was originally thought up by Kunihiko Ikuhara (goddamn I love this man) who directed Sailor Moon (some of the series and the
Promise of the Rosemovie) and he got together a group of 5 people (Chiho Saito, Shinya Hasegawa, Yoji Enokido, Yuichiro Oguro and himself) under the name Be-Papas. Saito worked on the manga (which came out in 1996) while the rest worked on the anime (which came out in 1997). https://24.media.tumblr.com/30c7586e579b342014ddd53b55a1c3f5/tumblr_mkujqjzKja1qbbwx0o1_500.png " /> God bless you, Ikuhara.My feelings on Utena;
I discovered Utena when I was either 9 or 10 years old. I have always been a little weeb and spent a lot of time getting anime and manga from the library. I saw (in the manga section) the title “Revolutionary Girl Utena” and thought… how cool! What an interesting name! I remember seeing only volume 3 on the shelf and waiting each week to see if volume 1 would come in (why my stupid little self did not ask a librarian.. well, I don’t know lol). but it came in in a short amount of time, and I finally had my hands on the first three volumes of the manga.
Needless to say, I loved it (the anime is my all time favorite along with Tenchi and Miyazaki films, and it’s probably my favorite manga). I had wanted to be an artist since even before this young age (being inspired by anime on Toonami), but the art in Utena… it just blew me away and gave me an even deeper appreciation for manga as an art. Saito-sensei will always have a special place in my heart…
Not just that, I love pretty much everything about Utena. The story, the characters, the music… It’s all this perfect mixture to showcase the story of becoming your own person, living your life the way you want to… outside the box.
http://ohtori.nu/gallery/var/albums/Manga/Artwork/Everything_Else/Saito_Artwork_16.jpg?m=1380883718 " /> Is Saito’s art amazing or what? Now, on to my thoughts on the connection between Revolutionary Girl Utena and Tenchi Forever! Spoiler tag because… spoilers. Although I have spoiled a decent amount already for some people lol
[spoil]So, as I said, I woke up pretty early today and immediately started thinking on the connection between these two for some reason. So, some background on Utena. In the series, it’s said that a girl who cannot become a princess is doomed to be a witch (fairy-tale style). There is a rose prince, who goes around saving all the girls of the world and making them princesses. Except one girl… his sister. It’s taboo to be with your sibling in a romantic way, so his sister, Anthy, is a witch. However… it is a mixture of her brother dying (it’s impossible for one man to solve all the problems of every single girl in the world and it’s causing him to die) and her wanting to be a princess, she locks up her brother in a prison, Ohtori Academy. He is safe, and she is finally a “princess” (and yes, they have sex).
There is a movie manga, and in that, we are told about Anthy “Her desire to love was so strong, she became a witch” (She didn’t only want to be a princess, she was the only one in the world who truly cared for her brother, the prince, and didn’t want him to die). In the anime, the episode where we see Anthy looking after her brother, who is suffering, she decides then to lock him away so he will be safe and have him to herself. She tells the people that she’s taken him away where no one else can reach him.
I was thinking, this is exactly what Haruna does with Tenchi. Haruna’s own desire to love and be loved was so strong, she takes him and locks him up. She takes someone she can’t have. Also, in the Utena movie, the brother is already dead. Anthy is trapped by keeping his memory alive and not moving on from him or live her life. Haruna is already dead, but it’s kind of a role reverse. She can’t move on, so she traps Tenchi because she’s hung up on Yosho and wanting love.
None of the other girls can have Tenchi (also, he is a prince too). Much like Anthy taking her brother away from the princesses.
Anthy has magical powers, and although it started from love and jealousy, the world of Ohtori has becomes a power-game for Akio (the brother, formerly known as Dios) manipulating everyone and wanting to control everything. Anthy, who loves him, uses her magic to keep his fantasy going. In Tenchi forever, Haruna controls everything(and it’s her own separate world), but it’s Tenchi’s power that sustains it. Again, role reverse, but a similar idea.
I think that’s it for now lol If I can think of anything else, I will put it here.
[/spoil] The Opening for Utena! One of my favorite OPs, of course

[/BBvideo]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ZTIPvkRy0M You can watch Utena on
and if you get into it or want to know more, I recommend theHuluamazingsite . Honest to goodness, one of the BEST anime sites I’ve EVER been to. There’s a huge image gallery, information out the wazoo, a forum… tons of otherEmpty MovementUtena-related things as well. As I conclude my post, I’d also like to add the only negative reviews I’ve read of Utena so far have been “I didn’t get it”… If that says anything

It do get a bit weird at times but that’s one of the reasons why Utenais so much fun to watch and read.I have the first part, The Student Council Sagaand volumes 1 and 3 of the manga.Saito did a great job with the manga. kiyonesmile1 I think Utena has to be my favorite overall character.Of the male characters my favorite is Chuuchuu!
Gotta love that durn monkey of Anthy’s!
Animewise I don’t know which episode was the weirdest in the first part:the one with all the elephants in it or the one where Anthy and Utena switch bodies.
Anyhoo,I would recommend that anyone who hasn’t seen it yet check it out do so.It’s fun and weird and
monkeys abound!

YOU HAVE NO IDEA HOW HAPPY I AM WITH THAT COMMENT ABOUT SAITO I love her SO much! Her art is AMAZING. http://ohtori.nu/gallery/var/resizes/Manga/Artwork/Utena_Anthy/Utena_Anthy_03.jpg?m=1380883749 " /> I see a lot of Utena fans don’t like the manga because it
isa very watered down version of the anime. I personally like cute shojo things so it’s a good balance for me. Also, she said some things that people consider homophobic (in commentary for the last episode, she mentions not wanting to work on a series where the two girls are outright lesbians because … I forget, something about since it was in Ciao, a magazine for young girls, she didn’t want to make them feel alienated or something by making a lesbian series?) And she also threatened to walk out on Utenaif they kissed in the second ending, so Ikuhara hid it lol. :38-:40

http://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lq8eeu1Teb1qdyi3xo1_500.jpg " /> but I think the popularity of Utena has helped her become ok with it, and it IS more heavily implied in her movie manga that they are lesbians. (I tend to defend Saito… I once encountered someone in a Saito fan group asking about Utena, they asked if it was about lesbians and I said yes, and they said they didn’t like lesbian series, and I am not Saito or have really talked to her but I feel maybe she was afraid of having Utena received more like that than all the positivity it got).

http://ohtori.nu/gallery/var/resizes/Movie_Manga/Movie_Manga_01.jpg?m=1380883040 I love Chu Chu, too! Such a cute little guy haha!

Mitsuki lover, did you get the re-release box set? I have those, they’re WONDERFUL. The last box comes with a book (well they all have books) but in this one, fan Qs were chosen for Ikuhara to answer, one of mine was chosen ;w; It was such a stupid question xD but it made me happy. -

Yes,I got the version that Nozomi came out with.Great fun reading to comments that come along with each episode.
Even though I only have two volumes of the manga it’s a great read and helps to introduce the setting in volume 1,which really is the prelude to the series.
What happened to Utena’s aunt might help to explain some of the reasons why Utena herself might lean
toward lesbianism.
I think without reading that part of the manga you might not quite understand Utena’s motivation.
IIRC though the movie ‘The Adolesecence of Utena’ is more out and out with the entire subtext than
the series though,it also has the rep for being a bit weirder too.
I don’t mind the entire yuri thing either as long as there’s a reason for it being there.
And with apologies to Chu Chu but Nanami is the series epic buttmonkey!

That’s an interesting theory about her aunt being an influence! I’ve never heard that. I don’t think that though, myself. I think Utena was always gay or bisexual but it was her discovering. I say bisexual because she is/was in love with Dios… There’s an interview somewhere with Ikuhara saying he likes gay relationships because you can focus more on the character, because in straight pairings it starts to revolve around their relationship than them as characters… something like that. Also I just think the man likes lesbians. One of my friends was actually saying the other day “Wait, what happens to Utena before she’s at Ohtori?” I told her the anime didn’t really give an explanation. I think maybe she lived with her aunt, but in the anime we never see any postcards (I don’t think she was sent any) and there’s an episode towards the end where we learn what really happens during the “Once upon a time…” scene

^u^)hereUgh, Nanami xD I actually started to really like her and feel bad for her towards the middle and end of the series, but I just always remember her killing the kitten in the first arc and I just can’t seem to get over that…

What I had in mind as regards to Utena and her aunt was the way in the manga that guy in the prelude chapter pretended to like Utena and then was also pretending to be her aunt’s boyfriend as well. And then
which was pretty traumatic, and he only pretendedUtena is shocked to find them togetherto be her ‘Prince’ to use her to get to her aunt.
On the other hand it’s too bad that Utena’s friend Kaido wasn’t a regular character or in the anime since
he seems like such a nice guy in the one chapter of the manga we see him in and makes a good foil for
Utena.
