Here’s a fun little something I dug up: an article from Lazer, which in the 90s/early 00s was theSpanish-speaking publication for anime fandom, industry news, and community events like conventions. Here, I believe it was Pablo Ruiz who excitedly announced in 2001 Tenchi OVA, Universe, and Tokyo with Spanish dubs being broadcast throughout Latin America on television (much like many of us via Toonami). I consulted with fellow fan and Spanish-speaker NAAN (whom you might run into on our Discord once in a while) to provide a translation below it.
Tenchi Muyo Finally Comes To Latin America!Tenchi Muyo has now been dubbed and broadcast since the end of last year in various countries of the region. This anime, created in 1992 by Masaki Kajishima and produced by Pioneer LDC and AIC, was originally released as an OVA with an initial length of 6 episodes. In the wake of its resounding success, a second miniseries of OVA episodes was made, adding up to a total of 12 episodes for this era in video. Added to this are four specials also released as OVAs and two 26-episode TV series, each set in alternative universes.
There are also three films, and a manga drawn by Hitoshi Okuda published by Kadokawa Shoten. The following can be seen in Latin America: 14 initial episodes that correspond to the OVA continuity (adding to the 12 mentioned above due to the fact that the last episode is a two-parter, and the first special must also be included), and 52 episodes belonging to the two TV series.
A total of 66 episodes, all faithfully dubbed with the original names preserved. This dub was produced in Chile, and was paid for and supervised by Pioneer, the original Japanese producer. Tenchi Muyo is a crazy romantic comedy with a touch of action that revolves around Tenchi Masaki, a seemingly normal high school boy who one day accidentally breaks the seal of a mysterious cave long guarded by his family, and discovers that the legend surrounding it was more than mere rumor. After sleeping for 700 years, a demon – Ryoko – with the appearance of a beautiful young woman is awakened and pursues Tenchi everywhere, though not to kill him but to seduce him. But this is only the beginning, as it is revealed that she is actually a space pirate with some enemies, including alien princesses and an intergalactic police officer who is hot on her heels.
Obviously Tenchi will always be stuck in the middle of this ruckus since all of these girls will end up living in his house, with Ryoko and Ayeka competing for his heart.
