Hi first post here! Before I get a million “oh great another noob question,” its actually the other way around. I started watching Tenchi in the late 90s with “Tenchi in Love” back on Saturday Morning Anime on the Sci-fi channel. I got really into the whole Tenchi world and then hit a brick wall when they stopped making OVAs. I’m just getting back into it…
So my question is about a few things. First off, all these doujinshis by Kajishima. Are they canon? Some of it is pretty explicit… I haven’t seen any of them translated, but there’s a ton of scans over at E-hentai.org, and I’ve been thumbing through them, though I can’t understand the Japanese. I read the Shin Tenchi Muyo novels years ago, but I’m unsure about what is just random extra stuff that doesn’t count and all the canon lists I see on the internet only include anime titles with the Shin novels as an aside.
The second question I’ve got is about the spin off series. GXP, Dual, War on Geminar, and something called “Isekai no Sekishi Monogatari.” Do these series actually affect the TM:R plotline, or are they just extra? Its kinda lame, and I hate to admit it, but I’m not 20 anymore and don’t have an indispensable amount of time to sit and watch anime. :'( So any help on what really needs to be watched and could be skipped over I’d really appreciate it.
For a first post, this is probably super long, so apologies!

First off let me say welcome to :sign: ! The short answer to your question is about the doujins is yes they are canon. They continue the plot in a non-animated form. Some of the more “explicit” material in those doujins aren’t so much canon as much as what they are at face value. The Shin Tenchi novels are also canon and show events that happened prior to OVA 1. GXP and War on Geminar both continue the TMR! plot line. Gxp takes place after OVA 3 aka “Ryo-Ohki” and War on Geminar takes place roughly 15 years after GXP.
Also Isekai no Sekishi Monogatari is the Japanese name for War on Geminar.
Dual does not directly tie in with Tenchi but it does “connect at the corners” according to Kajishima the creator of Tenchi and Dual. Dual does make references to Tenchi however (if you have seen the GXP episode called “Parallel” you will get the connection).
Hope that helped!

First off, welcome to the forum! strat_guy wrote:a few things. First off, all these doujinshis by Kajishima. Are they canon? Well one of the things about Tenchi is that it’s not as simple as saying “This is correct, this is not”, Tenchi is one of the rare gems that has multiple continuities, all of which are worthy of being called “correct”, Hasegawa made THE very first Tenchi novels which pre-date the Shin novels, she also helped create the first OVA, and her 11th novel became the movie “The Daughter of Darkness”, but just because it ‘s not Kajishima’s, does that mean it’s not worth watching? I think you can guess the point I’m getting at
But more to your question, everything that Masaki Kajishima creates, is “canon” to the OVA continuity, this includes any novels, doujins, or whatever else he makes, with the exception of his Hentai (but even that has some pretty strong ties so, lol)

Seikishi and War on Geminar are the same thing, Funimation changed the name of Seikishi to
cash in on the nostalgia, better market it over here, and it worked, Each of them is tied to Tenchi in one fashion or another, War on Geminar and GXP are the closest connected to the OVA line because they are set in the same timeframe and worlds as Tenchi, and they very much affect the TM! Plotline, because basically however Kajishima decides to make them, the Main Cast of Tenchi Muyo bend around them.

That’s great thank for the responses! Looks like I’ve got to set some time aside to watch some anime… Next question: Are there scanlations for the Tenchi doujinshis? Obviously there’s tons of scans out there of all the stuff, but i haven’t seen any of it translated page by page. If there’s such hardcore fans of Tenchi still around, why hasn’t anyone put a scanlation team together to clean and translate all these Tenchi manga? That’s actually something I’d love to get involved in, the stuff’s been around for long enough apparently.

To back up a bit… Dual does tie into the OVA canon, abliet more in a less direct way. If Tenchi is the main Wiki article, then Dual would be it’s footnotes explaining the content. Kajishima loves being a troll, and yes has said all my series “are connected at the corners”… when in reality they are more connected at the hips like conjoined twins… If you really want me to go “old Dual fan” on ya and divulge details like a broken water main, we can do that too sometime…
😉 Here’s sort of a relationship tree… in no special order.
Tenchi OVAs 1-3 > Doujins / Novels > Geminar > GXP > Paradise War > Photon > Dual > Mihoshi Special / Sammy
Tenchi Universe > Tenchi Muyo in Love Movie 1 > TMiL 2 aka Tenchi Forever Movie > Eternal Memory manga
Tenchi in Tokyo
Tenchi Manga
Hasegawa Novels > Daughter of Darkness movie
Concerning scanlations:
While I try to do little things here and there via machine translations, there are no fluent Japanese readers in the Tenchi community at large. There were a couple several years ago, in a different time, different forums, but they left for various historical reasons.
There was a wife/husband team that tried to translate the novels, but they were shut down. That too, has a history.
The problem is two fold mostly, knowledge (ie being able to know Japanese enough to proof read), and willingness / time to actually work on things.
To actually get scanlating to work properly, we’d need scans of very high quality. What shades of blue has at g.hentai that you referred to is… sometimes usable sometimes not. Granted it’s probably the most complete scan collection though.
If we could actually interest a scanlation group to pick up the novels, doujins, et cetera, that’d be huge. Even a regular that can proof read, is a major plus.
AstroNerdBoy has decided to pay for translations, which he has someone do, but we’re talking about $60-70 a page I think if I remember right. Which is higher than the going rate to have a page illustrated from nothing at devArt… so the majority of people are not keen on that idea.
The other reasons as to the stuff not being translated is multipart:
It was very hard to get a hold of when the community was big.
The content was very controversial, causing rifts in the fandom.
It’s chock full o porn for no reason.
The people that did have doujins or info, generally horded it, instead of releasing it.
Folks couldn’t be bothered to scan or translate in the old days. What was done, was often done to prove a / their own point.
We didn’t have file hosting in those days that could handle more than 10 MB of data, much less the gigs we use now.
So while the old guard from that era have somewhat died off, and unfortunately took a lot of knowledge with them, there’s more opportunity now… we just need sturdy minds and willing hands, to plow the fields and reap the carrot harvest so to speak.
I can do little things here and there:

Well I can do cleaning and typesetting. Im not real worried about high quality scans though, I think what is more important is getting the English content out there. I’ve read some pretty crappy scans, I think about how terrible those first releases of Berserk or Great Teacher Onizuka and the horrible quality that I put up with. I think the quality of the scans over at g.hentai would be just fine for the purposes of just getting the content out. If you’re interested in taking it up as a project… I’m down. Even if its only a page or two every few weeks, whatever. If people see that someone is working on it, it may lead to getting volunteers from outside the community, if the scans were posted to MangaHere or something like that. That would be awesome, I’d love to be a part of working on a title that I actually have invested myself in for over a decade.

The reason I hit on high quality scans so much is the machine translation has a harder time with lesser resolutions. I can always scale something down… going up is the hard part. It also doesn’t nothing at all for handwritten font, and currently the better method I have does horizontal text only, so character have to be chopped and reoriented from vertical (which there’s a loooot of).
Images with heavy background art too, are neigh impossible… you could probably clean the page by erasing / painting the unwanted art leaving the characters, it’s just a huge time sink.
We can talk if you want to do something… just we really truly need to get a proofreader if we’re going to do it right. Machine translation only gets you so far. Your credibility is shot when you translate something wrong, and it makes it to the news…
If you review the translation section here, I should have some guides as to how I’m doing it currently. CamDictionary is the best thus far. KanjiOCR is the older way.

Yes, lets try to get something going. I’ll help with whatever I can, I’m pretty proficient with Photoshop. I’d be glad to do anything on the graphic side from cleaning to conversion to typesetting. If you’re really interested, we can try putting “help wanted” ads around the various scan sites and see if anyone bites. Since its affiliated with Tenchiforum we may get some help, rather than just random people yelling “translate this for me!” Either PM me or put an official topic up in the translation area and lets get talking. -

I’m just gonna say this now, don’t expect anybody to do it for free, and don’t expect people to just throw money at it. I think it’s a fantastic opportunity, and I’ve always said that the best translation work has always been done by sub groups and they usually do it the cheapest, but rarely without some kind of monetary incentive of their own. I’m not saying it’s impossible, especially if we put forward the extra help to do things like typesetting and the like, but the barrier to projects like this has been, and more then likely always will be, money and interest.
That aside, I think another barrier is getting everyone on the same page as far as WHAT to translate goes, I personally think a more fruitful venture is the Hasegawa novels, we have literally almost NO idea what is in them, short of Manatsu no Eve/Daughter of Darkness. I know everybody wants the Kajishima doujins done, but really thats only for the new info, not for the content of the doujin itself. We all pretty much know what they are about, I think translating what has NEVER been looked at by translators because of “canon” is the way to go
-

Honestly the first “filter” is going to be usable scans… Your eyeball may be able to look at something and think it’s great, but a 3 MP camera doesn’t like it nearly as much.
I did just play around with some manga and doujin, and yes even some novel scans, and the results were mixed. I did find out that the google translate app will do vertical text (small woot) but getting a good capture for it to focus on is hard. Just about need a tripod.
Novels, I don’t even know where to start there. Nearly every line has sort of a subscript of characters, which is probably a modifier to what it’s attached to. Honestly I don’t feel we’re setup to do novels, those are massive amounts of text, surely complex word usage, and the scans are so-so. About the only benefit there is it’s all machine text.
The larger a block of text, the more a machine is going to butcher it. Shorter one-liners or sentences are far more accurate.
Chunks of manga or doujins, maybe interviews… is probably the best to hope for with what resources we have at hand now. Sure if someone can get a translation group to pick up something… more power to ya. I’ve tried here or there. The common issue I had is that it was so old… Almael would be the one to really have an inside view on this as he’s worked with baka-tsuki.

- September 26, 2013 at 3:50 AM
Hey I’m up for whatever. I just know that you gotta start somewhere, and if we can say, “hey, we’ve already got a cleaner/typesetter,” it may be easier. Then we can branch into getting novels translated. That would actually take a real translator though, and yeah, without a Japanese speaking friend, that takes $$. Let’s try and we’ll see. If enough people back it, someone is bound to jump onboard. I mean, you can only have so many people translating Naruto, right? 😆 -
- September 26, 2013 at 4:05 AM
camdictionary is best at horizontal, google translate in photo mode will do both, but it’s picky, AppOCR, you have to take a actual photo of first. Kanji OCR is older than dirt, and requires a lot of photoshopping of the image first, and generally a couple of passes before you’ll get the text ripped.
Apps are so far quite a bit faster at the job.

I’m on a Mac, so the programs are different. I tried three of them, Adobe Acrobat, OCRKit, and ReadIris. The last one worked the best. I was surprised that Adobe performed so poorly, it only got like half the characters right. ReadIris got the kanji right but some of the hiragana subscripts were off. Either way, the translation came out almost entirely incomprehensible. -

First off, Happy Birthday JGZinv.
Well, where to begin?
It’s nice to have a team but when it comes down to old and no-longer popular titles you are likely left alone. I did have a dozen people over the years but sadly they all jumped off very soon. Recruiting is very difficult and bleak.
What you need are dedicated people willing to work it. It doesn’t matter how good they are as long as they do some work. Without dedication and commitment, forget it.
As to translation it’s not impossible to do it with machine translation but you need to learn a bit about the language. At least know roughly the kanas, the structure of the language, have some dictionaries at hand, a Kanji search engine, and a romanization engine. You should learn to recognize them after working for some time… You gotta look at the romanization rules; develope a feel for engrish. The japanese are very “flexible” here. You will always end up making a judgment call due to the fuzzyness, possible variations, typos, etc. Depending on the author’s style/fancyness half of the time it could be very easy or hard to decide… Tenchi is probably way easier than Seikai or KOR, I doubt it has multiple languages to deal with.
If you got the ocr version it’s more likely to get people to translate…but don’t get your hopes up.
Imho, Finereader and its japanese Yomkaku are the best programs. I use Yomikaku but it’s way too cumbersome if you don’t know japanese. I dunno about the new Finereader versions but it should do very well. I used to use it before. All programs have difficulties with changing background and colors so there are times when you gotta invest in preparing the images for OCR. Depending on image format or sources there are other cleanup tricks … often very complicated; too complicated to explain here.
For me the ocr version has a lot of advantages, especially with the Baronh. Search and replace makes it very easy. Of course you gotta have special markers to prevent replacing things you don’t want. Makes it easy to do Baronh corrections. Well, JGZInv got my detailed guides…
The perhaps most important trick with tranalation machine is to get rid of names/terms/places by translating them yourself first. Search and replace. That saves most of (google) machine confusion.
The japanese machines are smarter and force you to do it yourself anyway.
Backtrack sentence structure, japanese is reversed, and typical for asians compact and to the point.
Often connecting sub-sentences with the same “thing”(verbs) in mind… In a western language we would use a sentence for each part.

KanjiOCR is Windows, but the rest of what I mentioned is Android, with some crossover to iOS. I’m going to snag a copy of finereader ans see how well it does. I know it’s been around a long time.
I tried all the programs you mentioned strat a long time ago, and they didn’t work any better then either. Readiris is a joke, as are the rest.

Let us know about Finereader. I haven’t used it since version 7. Back then it was like 1000 times better than Omnipage. And with the newly added free Japanes/korean/chinese today it should be great. Back then you gotta pay like 300 bucks a year for those add-ons. -_- I couldn’t afford it even if I wanted to. -
- September 27, 2013 at 9:41 PM
So far it worked very well… and it’s about $90 for ver 11. The issue though, is scans. IT can do a very good job even against a background image,
however you do need scanner quality scans. The stuff shades has at G.hentai is not sufficient
for good rips, it’s about 30-40% smaller than would be good.
We still desperately need a Japanese proofreader… but I think with the tech we have at hand, we can
definitely get OCR rips.
-
- September 28, 2013 at 12:54 AM
Very well. I’ll see if I can squeeze it onto my old computer. 30-40% is too bad. If it were originals and about 50% there’s a chance to get better quality out of it. But it will be fuzzy for most Kanjis and you can’t be sure on all of them.
Yep, definitely possible, it just takes a while.
😆 -
- September 28, 2013 at 3:48 AM
Here… how are these for higher quality? These are from (C50) [Nontan Project (Kajishima Masaki)] Tenchi Souran. As you can see, the lower starting quality means some things I can restore, like “Page 162”, some things I can’t, like “Page 3.” Particularly with the kanji, some of the smaller strokes get squished and no amount of contrast can get them back. But, I did what I can, and the file sizes are waaaay bigger, so the images are better quality. It doesn’t take too long to do this either. What takes time is when I have to do redraws to restore the image. Tell me what you think though. -
- September 28, 2013 at 4:57 AM
Pg1 and 2 will be unusable for OCR, it’s squishy handwriting script that no machine will read. Page 20 is close, like you said, but with the kanji mostly eliminated, other than just stripping
the rest of the text for the sake of doing it, not much we can do with this.
162 is usable.
BTW I’m a PS CS3 user, so no worries on that, I’ve done all that before too.
-
- September 28, 2013 at 5:08 AM
Actually that’s not true about page 1. Page 2 is just a sketch, so nothing that needs to be translated. Page one is all in hiragana. If you know your kana tables, you can at least transliterate it or manually type it into a translator. Not that difficult. BTW, I’m at CS6.
-
- September 28, 2013 at 5:19 AM
RE: CS6 – Guess that means you get to work even harder then… imhappyplz 120 looks like mostly Kajishima complaining up a storm about getting Tenchi through the production
process. *cough*sounds like lucas*cough*
I had a full set of Nontans once upon a time. Shades and ANB got most of them.
I secured a source for novels… OCR is mostly ok… the subscript like characters are throwing things for a loop though… arrgh.
Hasegawa’s 1st novel title is something like…
Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki
Successive Visitors: A tangled web of love!
(It should be more romantic than that… the book deals with new years in some way from what tiny tiny way I’ve looked at it so far… but I can’t seem to think of anything better.)
-
- September 28, 2013 at 3:30 PM
Well the doujinshi I have are the Omatsuri Zenjitsu no Yoru Heisei Ban 2 and 3, KO 2006, and a couple of the old thicker ones.
Doujins I think will be the easier ones to tackle due to the text. They’re also shorter, so we can
get something done, and the 2 Heisei-bans are partially Dual related, so I’m most familiar with the
subject. They do have Tenchi in there too.
-
- September 28, 2013 at 4:50 PM
As to the source images in general especially when you do the scans and all. The Kanas/Kanjis should have at least a size of 28×28 preferable more like 32×32 or better.
I usually scan and save as bmp first.
Then I use Irfanview to reduce the colors. Do not reduce colors in one go! It’s best to do it step by step to preserve the structure: e.g. to 65536 to 256 (to 16 (to 2)). You may try and skip a step if it’s possible.
For a reduction to 256 I use the ‘radical image optimization tool’ plugin, it usually gives the best results. File->save for web(plugin)
With Irfanview you can batch every work just make sure of the settings each time, because the last setting might be different. You can save batch scripts, too.
Then save it as bmp or gif then batch convert to png gives the smallest size with best quality. Saving directly to png does not always gives a smaller size due to often bad implementation of the format. PNG can store lower bit colors but people usually program it to store 24 bit so it doesn’t always gives a really smaller size. It’s bothersome when you do some 3D mod and 65552 colors become preferable.
Jpg can get smaller but it blurres everything and may introduce more smeared colors. Well, just saying.

I found this as a pretty significant translation guide, it’s written for eroge games, but the software and principles used are universal.

So JG, are you saying you have physical copies of those doujins? Cuz that would be an awesome starting point. That way at least with the first few we could control the image quality. I’m sure they’re priceless to you, so you wouldn’t want to de- staple them so it would still take some touching up to get rid of the shadows from the binding, but the translation is more important. -
- September 28, 2013 at 7:20 PM
I have them yes, but they were scanned long ago anyway. One nice thing about the thin doujins is they are so thin that you can flatten them out without any trouble. Now AIC Loves… mangas… yeah that’s neigh impossible without sacrificing the spine.
Shadows can be fixed in photoshop anyway
-
- September 29, 2013 at 7:55 PM
So if you’ve got them scanned do you have them hosted somewhere already? Or can you email them to me? I’ll get working on cleaning the images and clearing all the balloons so you can focus on the translations. And yeah, scanning tanks are a pain in the rear. I have Outlaw Star tanks that I’d love to have translated, but scanning them without pulling them apart… yeah that sucks.
-
- September 29, 2013 at 9:37 PM
Nope don’t have em hosted, though the scans I’m using so far as tests… are coming through at about 98% recognition, so not bad really. Some will obviously need cleanup. This wasn’t posted in here, as we did it over minchat, but with some aid from crazed I compiled a big substitution file dictionary for the translation aggregator. Basically kanji names are a great way of messing up the translation, so this swaps out anything it has an entry for. So far, been working pretty well on Dual stuff. I’m adding a line here or there for stuff I recognize but didn’t have quite right.
Translating this stuff is scary….
I’m not sure if this is Kajishima trolling the fans… or literally his intention for the end of Ep 14, but it starts in on Kazuki and Mitsuki R having a baby girl as a result of Ayuko’s deception. Yayoi’s the step parent, the others act similar to Tenchi, in taking care of the baby together and trying to figure out how to change a diaper. Reika gets angry while Ayuko just laughs with a “Hohohoho…!”
Originally MitsukiS was going to be more towards Yayoi’s role. Dee would have been older. Two other new characters would have come in and been much more like NGE. There was a blond haired spy woman that infiltrated the EDF during their acceptance of more pilots from around the world.
*shivers* Take it away… I don’t want to read it anymore…!
*Runs off into the night*
I’ll try to get a program set together of what I’m using. Bundle that up.
Scans I’ll have to organize, the doujins are all in one folder, far as Dual goes, but I’m not sure it’s complete.
-
- October 15, 2013 at 11:11 PM
General consensus on how the pages are turning out so far? Any thoughts? Also, do we have a scanlators’ page to include with the finished product? I was thinking of making one for us, a template anyway, so that we could include it with the final products. Pretty much what every scanlation team does.
Keep up the good work!
-
- October 15, 2013 at 11:49 PM
I noticed that some of the areas on the pages that originally had vertical Japanese text make the English text look slightly small but I suppose that is to be expected since the areas were originally intended for vertical text. Other than that though they are looking good to me! Keep up the fine job strat_guy! As far as the scanlators page goes i’m not quite sure. -
- October 16, 2013 at 12:24 AM
I intend on making one specifically for A!MG, I have something in mind to go with it’s theme, I’m not partial to anything in particular for the Tenchi doujins. If you want to make one for that go ahead. A note towards strat_guy, is that I feel we need to take a good look at some of the English
translations we’re doing as a quality check. Some of it just doesn’t sound quite right.
I know I’m not able to check it all everyday, but I’m trying to get around to it.
I’m also probably going to stop trying to translate the sidebar text from A!MG, the stuff is just too error prone with the quality of scans we get. Granted it’d be a leg up over what anyone else has done but it’s taking 8-10 times longer per page to get a rip. I could finish all of the remaining 20 pages roughly in a handful of hours, or spend another 3-5 days on it.
The early bird gets the worm in this business so to speak, this needs to get out there so we’re visible. Plus it’s the long awaited 25th anniversary 300th chapter. So we need to get it done, with our name on there.
So I’ll probably be switching gears with that. Otherwise, I’ll try to go back and proofread any pages done thus far…. probably need a new “tag” of some sort for the title.
I might also talk to dagon at some point about the finished results and how we’ll organize the subforums, since we’re really close on the Heisei-ban 2.
-
- October 20, 2013 at 1:16 AM
HB 2 and A!MG 300 images and ripping complete. I’ll start cleaning AMG since Strat has HB 2.
AMG has already been released somewhat privately and incomplete I might add
as a commission by someone. I’d prefer we show ourselves of higher quality, so
I’ll still work on releasing it.

Crazed can you check your Translation Aggregator folder and go into Plugins / Replacements and check the names file there is full of our Tenchi stuff… because nothing you’re posting in the way of results seems to be picking up the substitutions from that list we made.

I got this one cause it had higher DPI and the rollers are all the way across. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00JZL8KSO/ref=twister_B00S2C5O3G?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1 Plus I got it off eBay for like $40.

One or two. I think the trick is more so going to be taking a sheet of glass, perhaps a mirror, and getting it angled right so
you can get a scan.
What really befuddles me, is the DIY book scanners that take a few hundred pages an hour, use(d) mid to low range megapixel cameras. Those were high cost parts of the assembly at the time. Scanner wands have been around quite a while and the price has been in the $80 to $300 range, and you’re getting a better DPI.
Can’t say I’m going to reinvent the wheel, but maybe the books scanner concept needs an overhaul.

DIY scanners seem really interesting, but I don’t think I’ll ever take the time to build one. Idk, but chances are pretty low. Also it cost more than a wand scanner. As it is now, I wouldn’t use a glass to smoosh the books out, the wands don’t take photos, they scan (no shit), I have a feeling they are design to touch the page.
It might take super long, but if you scan page by page, getting as close as possible to the spin, you could have better results.
Seriously though, for the doujins, I don’t even understand why you would need a glass. Thin doujins are the closest thing we have to a magazine.

Doujins are relatively easy because most of them are thin and just held together with a staple. The thick ones however have spines and are very stiff and easy to crack.
What I’d like to find is some sort of glass or “view shifter” that is somewhat like a periscope.
Where I could place the flat glass shifter, and it would fit into the book so the whole page was covered, then use the
wand scanner an inch or two away from the spine on the glass and get a proper full page image. Some things you just can’t
scan well without destroying it, so that’s what I need to figure out.
I got the scanner wand in today. Going to start messing with it in a few minutes.

Well bottom line is that if it’s used for what it’s designed for, and used how it’s designed, it works as expected. The two issues I see with it is there’s about an inch of housing to either side of the wand (not edge to edge) that keeps
it from being close to the spine.
The second is that it has no real ability to scan hovering above a page or not directly on the page. The reason is two fold.
A. The rollers on this particular device actually activate a burst light when it moves. No motion = no light.
B. When not directly on the page, the image is blurry and smeared all to hell.
So my next course of action is to get some glass and maybe a mirror, see what can be done with that.
Otherwise, I’ve only messed with JPEG at medium (600dpi) and hi (1050dpi) and the scans are usable.
There’s a bit of a crosshatch or almost like a texture effect in the solid areas of color if you zoom into the resulting
pictures, but hi level scans at 8MB for a book cover are really nothing, and scaling down the image for web removes
that anyway. PDF might be different, haven’t tried. Scan speed I’m going slow (to me), but I’m faster than a flatbed, haven’t had a smeary image yet when I was using it properly.
Color reproduction is fair to good. Certainly web usable, but I wouldn’t use if for color print reproductions without some tweaking against the source. The same could be said of flatbed scanners, albeit to a slight less degree.
For the $42 I paid for a $80-120 stick, I think it’s worth it for the functionality it offers. It’s a one trick pony, but that’s all
it ever promised to begin with. Supposedly I can get several hundred to a thousand scans on a 1 GB microSD card, and the built in battery will last a few hundred on it’s own. Don’t know if the 1.3 tft screen is worth it, probably not, you really can’t see squat for the previews on it. The extra 140dpi in high mode over the next model down is probably kinda sorta worth it though.
It does offer a scan direct to computer mode, as well as ABBYY FineReader 10 (should sound familiar to some of you), and a cloud app if you want to do that. Otherwise PC hookup just sees the memory card as flash storage and you can pick files right off the card.
Edit – Trying it with some heavy plate glass, just produced non-useful mostly blurry images. Probably find some thinner scanner bed glass before I call it pointless, but not looking good.

The not hovering thing is not surprising at all. I’m little disappointed if the wand isn’t able to scan properly a book with a big spin. It was to be expected though. Is it so even if you force on it a little
wth2 ?I guess 1 inch of housing is pretty big hu..
600 Dpi is already awesome quality, 1050 isn’t a little superfluous?
Also,
we need samples o/ -

Here knock yourself out. Took about 26 scans and photoshopping to get these 9 usable. These are done on hi dpi in jpeg. Then reduced 50% in photoshop and straightened and skewed on some of them.

26/9 ? Well it seems good for one-off scans, and rare unique art work, but as you present it it seems rather time consuming. Scanning a document with more than 50 pages appears to be quite the battle.
Your document is rather small isnt it ? On the writing is smaller than usual maybe ? Because I have a feeling we could get a better zoom capacity with bigger example
mmmm1 .What did you scaled down again?
Also ocr is tricky when it comes to no-white background but meh.

It’s a CD booklet… it is relatively small. The scans started out as 5200×5200 or so. Not sure what else you could want from it.
The source just needs to be flat, even staples in the middle of the page can be a problem.
The more annoying thing for me is I can’t seem to keep it from cutting off the end of the page for
most any given scan, or because you drop off the page the scanner shifts in hand and you end up smearing it.
It does work, just it has some quirks.

^Are more examples to come wth2 ?Anyhoo I have been recommended to use the app CamScan to take picture of document, so I’ve decided to try it out on the TMiL novel.
Conditions of scans : crappy (old novel = the page is old-white-yellow-brown with a lot of imperfections, light uncontrolled, I used my finger to get a flat page, there was shadows on the page…)
I used an iPhone 5C, so 8 Mpx camera.
The post processing of the app is simple : Croping auto or manual, and auto-leveling (can be done manually too).
http://image.noelshack.com/fichiers/2015/33/1439706749-nouveau-document-4-1.jpg " /> So yeah, the changing of contrast made very visible the little flaws of the page, and the shadow mark is darker than ever. But the definition is large enough to do OCR.
So I did it… And you’ll be surprised of how fast it was !! Seriously, ABBY add trouble on a very few kanji, and also on ponctuation, but it wasn’t a pain to rip AT ALL.
I didn’t double checked it.. I double check only when I translate, but we’re safe on the accuracy.
