    This thread is for Ryoko love ONLY. You can say why you love her, talk about her scenes in the anime, post pictures of her, ect. This thread is not for criticism, debates, or bashing. If you start causing trouble in this thread, you will be banned. First offense will get you a month long ban, second offense will result in a permanent ban.

    That being said…here’s my reason for loving Ryoko (copied from a post I made on another forum.)

    “We just do!”

    I just like her. I liked her from the moment I saw her on a wallpaper when I was 10, back in 1997. And then I saw her in the series and it turned from like to love. Her personality is one that I enjoy. In the OVA, I like how she’s tough, but she still has a naiveness to her. Like when she didn’t know what gas was, when she was easily tricked by Tenchi, and later when Sasami tricked her (and Ayeka) into believing the shoujo manga was a guide to winning someone over earth style. That’s cute, to me. I like her interactions with Tenchi, and how she can be clingy. She’s also a very funny character, she makes me laugh, especially her “mock hurt.” Also, I like how she acts so tough and she is a good fighter, but she messes up a lot. “Another battle lost, that’s the story of my life.” I also enjoy her little mannerisms. How she floats, how she always likes being perched somewhere up high, her cat-like behaviors. She’s very interesting to watch because she always seems to be moving. And of course, I feel she’s very beautiful. One of the most beautiful anime characters that I’ve ever seen.

    I’ll stop rambling now, but to me, Ryoko is what makes me return to the Tenchi anime series and want to rewatch it. I like the other girls, yeah…but as much as I like them, I wouldn’t have rewatched the series if it weren’t for Ryoko. She’s my favorite anime character of all time.

    (I know I said “I like” and “also” a lot, but I couldn’t see any way around it. XD Sorry if my writing seems a bit repetitive.)

      Oyasumi, I think you very elegantly summed up many of the reasons I love Ryoko as well (tough act to follow lol) well here goes nothing…

      *I apologize in advance, I will try to keep comments about Ryoko’s smoking hot bod to a minimum, & have a legitimate, well-thought out expression of Ryoko’s characteristics…

      I love her personality; I’m a little sad to admit, but I’ve never come across anyone with a personality like hers–though I think at the same time it just shows how amazing Ryoko really is…she’s not even ‘one in a million’–there’s only one Ryoko Hakubi in the entire universe!

      She just has this perfect balance of toughness & tomboy-ishness yet at the same time can be very feminine, cute, & even downright adorable at times (& if no one minds me saying, damn sexy as well!). With some other girls I’ve had experience with (both fictional & in real life) clinginess can be downright offputting, but with Ryoko being so attached to Tenchi, it just makes me laugh every time I see it (& makes me wish aloud that I were in Tenchi’s shoes at that moment). Not to be confused with unnecessary clinginess, what IS always attractive (yes, ladies, you may take notes) is her devotion for the guy she loves. She’s crazy about Tenchi, & she doesn’t care who knows it (especially Tenchi). With Ayeka (not bashing, just using as a comparison) she has the “shy girl” routine, but to me, a girl that’s unashamed of who she is, how she feels, & doesn’t give a damn who knows it is more attractive to me… in short, Ryoko doesn’t play games–well, I’m sure she would love games, she has a very fun-loving, sometimes child-like personality (like oav) which is another reason I find her appealing: she’s over 2,000 years old, but with the personality of a teenager; she’s young at heart (& body, if you don’t mind me saying…anyway, where was I…)–what I mean is, she doesn’t play head games: she makes it clear to Tenchi from the beginning how she feels about him, & doesn’t try to mess with his head in regards to her feelings for him. ALTHOUGH I did find it hilarious when she fibbed to Tenchi & everyone about Ryo Ohki’s egg being her’s and Tenchi’s; Ryoko being a troublemaker–yet another reason I loved her in ANY of the Tenchi series–she’s a bad girl. *Before I forget, fyi ladies lying about being pregnant in real life=NOT FUNNY! She’s not a princess, not a dainty girl waiting to be rescued or waited on hand-and-foot: she’s a space pirate! She’s robbed banks, stolen ships, ran from the cops on high-speed chases across the universe! She’s independent…yet as we hear toward the end of Tenchi Universe, when she states “I’m lonely…” when she is injured aboard Ryo-Ohki, she’s her own woman, & a tough space pirate, but also looking for love across the vast emptiness of space. Even a tough girl like “the demon caller” needs someone special in her life–life lesson right there–& after she finds Tenchi, she never wants to leave his side. It’s childishly adorable, yet admirable, attractive & yes, “mushy-gushy” at the same time. She’s loyal…love that about her too ^^ (how many times have I used “love” already? Don’t count, probably too many lol)

      I also love how even though she has all these super powers & abilities, & is super strong, she never wants to emmasculate Tenchi. She constantly demonstrates by her behavior towards him & others that she wants Tenchi to be her man, to stand up & fight for her when she needs him (& of course, vice-versa, she fights for him as well). Whenever she physically overpowers Tenchi, it’s always subtle & cute, like she hugs him & doesn’t let go, despite Tenchi’s best efforts. She would never, like in front of Ayeka or the others, say or do something to try to demasculate or humiliate him. She wants him to become a man, & to be all he can be…yet again, showing her undying true love & devotion for Tenchi.

      & of course, all her little quirks & mannerisms as described by Oyasumi so well–the way she floats & phases around Tenchi, the way she lounges around the support beams of the house, sleeping in & drinking sake, the way she is somewhat naive, the way she schemes to get what she wants, the way she could totally beat Ayeka at arm wrestling yet still give her a run for her money (in my opinion, beat her) in a swimming suit contest, the way she acts so melodramatic in front of Tenchi to piss off Ayeka (& gotta throw this in somewhere) the way she looks–she is HOT! Her hair (that color, what is that? Aqua green? Aqua blue? More green than blue? Blue than green?) Her eyes are gorgeous, perfect bod, I even like her ears, they look cute ^-^ (though with new artstyle in oav3, they looked a bit weirder, but still) & without a doubt, I just love how crazy she is about Tenchi!

      So in short:

      Her loyalty

      Her independence

      Her strength

      Her feminimity

      Her beauty

      Her devotion

      Her “bad girl” side

      & I think most importantly: her non-existant fear to be who she is, to be emotionally “naked” to the world. (I used that weird analogy to try to tie in her personality with her behavior at the bathhouse: her nudity, I feel, was not just mere fan service. It was completely consistent with her personality. She is unashamed of who she is. In front of Tenchi, Ayeka, the whole damn world, with her attitude & behavior she is always saying ‘this is me, take it or leave it’. Well, Ryoko, given everything I’ve mentioned above, after all these years I still say I will gladly take you just as you are…don’t ever, ever EVER change!!! ^-^

      I LOVE RYOKO! As explained from an old post from the Old Same Place.

      She’s perfect. It’s her hair, her eyes, her personality, her voice, and generally the way she carries herself. Never before or since have i ever seen a character like her she is truly one in a million. She’s charismatic, passionate, energetic, and she always knows what she wants and she’s not afraid to say it or go get it. She’s a fighter, a drunk, and a very stubborn and selfish woman. But she is also a very caring, loving, and kind woman when she shows it. She is without a doubt the most underappreciated and most loved character in the entire show. It all of these factors and so many more is what makes Ryoko so special. She is and always will be my most favorite woman in anime from the time I first saw her till the day I die. Long live Ryoko the Space Pirate.

      Ryoko is probably one of the few women who you can consider one of the major sex symbols of anime, and in fact probably far up there with likes of Faye Valentine of Cowboy Bebop fame. Everything about her screams “Drool over me” whether it’s her personality, her looks, or the way she behaves. I’m fairly certain that most young male anime fans had thoughts about her, and many female fans would go lesbian for that as well.

      She’s gained her own following through the past decade or so for being the brash, sexy, tomboy most people know her to be. Fan sites probably numbered in the dozens in the early stages of the internet and some still survive. Hell we still acknowledge her greatness almost everyday via this thread, our screen names, avatars, sigs, and through the character battle each year. I’d say she’s earned a spot in anime fame.

      I cannott lie, she is a very sexy girl. Would be nice to have one like her some day. And the cosplayers?

      Fufufufufufu, I liked the ending of Tenchi Forever more than Universe. Ryoko didn’t just appear out of the blue standing on a stone, and everyone was already together. With everybody united and only Ryoko with Tenchi, the moment seemed to convey that she won his heart. It was also the absolute ending.

      Thats true, but how many scenes have we gotten where Tenchi not only wanted her to come back, and looked forward to it, but EMBRACED here when she was there, one time, and that was the final episode of Universe ^_-

      I can’t remember how/when I came acrossed this one, but this girl is prob my fav Ryoko cosplayer (not that I really know of that many).

      *As I now recall I think she has more of her work on tenchiclub at deviantart.com (one of our affiliates)

      She really pulls off Ryoko’s hair amazingly, as well as her eyes.

      ^^I’ve seen her pics around quite a bit and I’m really torn. Some I really like, but some I’m not a big fan of. I do like her eyes though. I don’t know, I guess I’d have to see her in person.

      I’m also incredibly nit-picky. Not one of my better qualities.

      I think I just found it while looking up pictures. I can’t say when it was taken, sadly, but it does look old and grainy. 10 seems like a safe bet.

      This is probably one of the only people I’ve ever seen to pull off Ryoko’s hair perfectly, or damn near perfect, It looks like that pic is from 97? 98ish, I’ve seen a few other cosplay pics (probably from the same model camera at the time based on just the look of the pic) who said they had them taken in 97-98

      That wig had to be custom made, then. When I look at it it looks like stuffed felt, and I dont think I’d ever be able to find a wig like that. Any cosplayers I’ve seen doing Ryoko usually use a wig that is styled, to varying degrees and effects.

      Still, it’s weird to see a pic of that from before the whole Tenchi thing exploded onto TV. Just kind of goes to show the influence it had even before that.

      I also wanted to avoid double posting, but I had a strange dream that is relevant to the topic at hand.

      I usually wake up in the morning to my alarm, turn it off, and catch a few minutes/hours extra of sleep. This is when my mind usually runs rampant, playing on my deepest desires and fears. A few days ago was no exception.

      I was imagining an episode of ATHF, and they were in a massage parlor when who should be in there getting a massage, but Miss Ryoko Hakubi. And there she was on the massage table, towel covering her bare hindquarters, propping herself up on her elbows taunting Shake, Frylock, and Meatwad. I think she also had a tattoo on her back.

      Now I know this was a dream because of the damning evidence that she was voiced by none other than Petrea. Damn my subconscious, when will you stop harassing me :Ryokoface:

      The wig was likely created by a hair stylist that does anime wigs specifically. I can remember her Washu headress

      was like $350 at least… but it was a masterpiece. She did a pro Ryoko wig too…. I can’t seem to find her site anymore

      though…

      Ryoko was my original favourite character when Tenchi first appeared on Toonami. Heh… she nearly got me in trouble for watching the show, as my mom walked in during… episode four in Universe when she says “Damn” a lot.       Jumping in rather late, but maybe it will spur on some new vigor!

      Ryoko to me has pretty much become the Meta-Woman. I can’t help but compare a lady I become fond of (or vice-versa) to this cyan haired anime idol. Its not something I would really like to admit in public, but none the less my brain does it rather I want to acknowledge it or not. Does anyone else have this, err, predicament?

      Way to be brave & admit it! lol

      While I’m generally good at distinguishing reality from fiction, Ryoko has had such a profound influence on me starting when I was just a kid, she really is my ideal woman, & it’s sometimes hard to not try to compare real-life women to her (predictably, they fall short but hey it’s Ryoko! She’s one of a kind!)

      But the fact that she’s so unique has taught me that there’s lots of ‘one of a kind’ girls out there, just gotta look, & even if they can’t be Ryoko, they can come close! ;)

      *But if Ryoko ever really did show up in real-life, all bets are off I’m going for her!

      If Ryoko were a real person, I’d stay away from her.

      But as a character, she is awesome.

      Although Washu is my favorite character, I felt that that Ryoko was the best match for Tenchi.

      Ayeka has too much of a sense of entitlement,

      Sasami (despite her claims in the 3rd OVA) seems more like a sister to Tenchi than anything else,

      Kiyone wasn’t interested

      Mishoshi and Washu seem to be on the outskirts of the competition.

      Some would argue that Ryoko is just filled with lust and doesn’t care about Tenchi beyond gratification purposes, but there was one scene, my favorite one with her, that shoots that theory down.

      In Tenchi Muyo Episode 10, There is a scene where Ryoko tries on Tenchi’s mother’s dress and accidentally tears one of the sleeves. To make it balanced she intentionally rips the other one.

      In a rage Tenchi tells Ryoko that he hates her, which devastates her. The next time they are together, Tenchi is returning from the fields and Ryoko is waiting for him with the dress, poorly stitched up with cuts on her hands and one on her cheek.

      To her relief, Tenchi says he is no longer angry.

      That scene alone screams so many professions of love. It’s obvious that Ryoko has no experience with sewing as evidenced by the cuts on her hands but she did her best to fix it, in a desperate move to gain Tenchi’s forgiveness. In light of the fact that she has the ability to heal herself, the wounds on her fingers are curious-it seems she was so focused on fixing that dress that she never got around to healing herself. It’s scenes like this that prove Ryoko is not a lust driven tart that only cares about bedding Tenchi, she genuinely loves him and wants him to love her back and will stop being sexually aggressive when necessary to get it.

      This is one of the few times where Ryoko can be in character and still realize that love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails

      But the things that seal the deal for me are as follows:

      Of all the match ups, this would be the most entertaining

      But most importantly, Ryoko has earned it. In the Tenchi Universe series, she fulfilled the ultimate demonstration of love: laying down her life for Tenchi.

      None of the others have done that yet.

      Despite her impatience (as demonstrated by her amorous behavior), Ryoko has earned the right to be with him.

      In a rage Tenchi tells Ryoko that he hates her, which devastates her. The next time they are together, Tenchi is returning from the fields and Ryoko is waiting for him with the dress, poorly stitched up with cuts on her hands and one on her cheek.

      To her relief, Tenchi says he is no longer angry.

      That scene alone screams so many professions of love. It’s obvious that Ryoko has no experience with sewing as evidenced by the cuts on her hands but she did her best to fix it, in a desperate move to gain Tenchi’s forgiveness. In light of the fact that she has the ability to heal herself, the wounds on her fingers are curious-it seems she was so focused on fixing that dress that she never got around to healing herself. It’s scenes like this that prove Ryoko is not a lust driven tart that only cares about bedding Tenchi, she genuinely loves him and wants him to love her back and will stop being sexually aggressive when necessary to get it.

      This is one of the few times where Ryoko can be in character and still realize that love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails

      But the things that seal the deal for me are as follows:

      Of all the match ups, this would be the most entertaining

      But most importantly, Ryoko has earned it. In the Tenchi Universe series, she fulfilled the ultimate demonstration of love: laying down her life for Tenchi.

      None of the others have done that yet.

      Despite her impatience (as demonstrated by her amorous behavior), Ryoko has earned the right to be with him.

Vic’s got a hell of a singing voice, & the message of the song fits so well with Tenchi/Ryoko. & your example of ep 10 of oav… couldn’t agree more, Ryoko has shown to me time and time again how much she loves Tenchi, and she may not be able to say it with just the right words, but she shows it, her actions speak volumes more than any spoken words or written work. It’s childishly adorable, but so beautiful… dang it, I said I wasn’t gonna’ cry… I’m a sucker for Tenchi/Ryoko love, amv’s & the like, & you sir, in my humble opinion, hit the bullseye on this one.       I bought her as a kit from E2046.com and had a friend in Germany build her for me, then I just did the rock and bushes for the base. I think it was maybe around 150-200 total.

      I have a friend here in the U.S. though now that could probably do it for much less.

      Yeah, full build and paint service ! He also does original pieces..I’m planning to have him help me with a 1/1 Ryoko at some point soon just need to get all my proverbial ducks in a row. ;)

      Ryoko was always my fav character. She probably was the only thing I really was interested when I watched Tenchi Muyo & Tenchi Universe.

      I’m no very good at putting my feelings into words so bear with me lol. My fav moments were always the Tenchi & Ryoko 1 to 1 moments particularly the 1st episode of the OVA. I love Ryoko’s power of being this demon aged over 700 years that has terrorised so much but you kind of overlook it lol (a bit like Tony Soprano if you watch The Sopranos). She is both cute and sexy her childishness is very endearing. She is very emotional and wears her heart on her sleeve. Her feelings of Tenchi are so cute. I think I look up/relate to Ryoko the way she feels about Tenchi (I’m currently going through a crush ATM) in fact I started watching a bit of Ryoko when I developped a crush a few years ago. I always thought Ryoko was the perfect match for Tenchi, I may be biased but I still think it.

      I suppose it’s high time that I post in this thread. I love Ryoko’s character from the bottom of my heart. As many here have said already, Ryoko captured my heart and imagination from a very young age when I watched Tenchi on Toonami. I’m certain that she was my first real crush, and that she was the standard to which I held all other fictional female characters. For over 10 years I had all but forgotten about Tenchi, remembering only the a handful of the smallest details about the show. Ryoko’s name, face, and character faded from my memory, but I never lost the vague, but intense, emotional connection to her. For a decade I was haunted by the memory of that special character who captured my young heart and mind, and who, unlike every other Tenchi memory, refused to fade into oblivion. The comparison has already been made by other members, but as it was the shadowy memory of Ryoko that brought Tenchi back to reality in the third movie, so it was the unshakeable feelings I held for Ryoko that brought me back to Tenchi Muyo!. Ryoko’s triumph as a character lies in her charisma and depth of character, and while she shares these traits with most of the other characters, the combination of writing, acting, and presentation sets her head and shoulders above the rest. Well, there it is. Here’s to Ryoko, she really is one for the books.

      I had one of those moments yesterday that was kind of hilarious.I was watching the end credits to Kashimashi and noticed that Jun Puu’s seiyuu was named Ryoko! 😆

      Yeah,automatically think of a spiky white haired female space pirate as playing the free spirited alien

      Ryoko will always be my heart mind body and soul. I used to watch Tenchi when I was 5-6 and I stoped watching it for a long time but then I started to draw anime and it was always a girl with blue hair. I had forgotten who it was but I always knew her. Then one day I saw a episode of Tenchi ova and all my memories of her came back to me and I almost cried. That is how I know that she has always been a part of me from the moment I layed eyes on her and she’ll always be in my heart now and forever on in my life. :ryoko: :fight:

      Ryoko for what she is, is pretty well done. She was made to cash in on the popular character Lum Invader, from Rumiko Takahashi’s Urusei Yatsura series. The two share many of the same skills, weaknesses and love of parading around naked. You can actually just call Ryoko the 90’s Lum.

      The first time I saw Ryoko wasn’t actually on Tenchi Muyo, but in some dreams I had many years ago, a few years before Tenchi Muyo. When I saw her on tv for the first time I was stunned that the woman in my dreams looked liked her( just a few diffrences here and there, but who cares). That is probabley the first reason I love this chararcter. Secondly, her eyes. I don’t know why, but those eyes are just so intriguing. The way she had those eyelashes exentiated( think that’s how you spell it) those golden eyes of her and you can’t help to look away when they are up so close. Thirdly, her attitude made me like her alot. Even though she had that bad/tough girl attitude going we all know she has a very caring side to her. Thirdly, if she liked someone she wasn’t afraid to say it, if she knew what she wanted, she would go after it with all shes got. Fourthly, i would have to say her hair. Who could ever forget that hair huh? Fifthly, when they had Petrea voice her, it went together like chocolate and peanutbutter, it was perfect. She made such an impact to me as a kid, that I had my first anime crush on her, because I wanted a girl like that one day. When the tenchi series went off the air, the only thing I could remember after it’s long abscence was her name. Some time last year, I looked up her name and found out the show she was on. Afterwords i went on youtube to find the first episode and happened to find myself on the tenchiforum channel. As soon as the video started and the music played, I was hit by a tsunami sized proportion of nostalgia. If it weren’t for ryoko, I would have completly forgoten about this wonderful show. So I guess i owe Petrea a big thank you for being the character I would never forget.

      Actually, I’m surprised she didn’t cry outright after he said he hated her; even if he didn’t mean it. :D I do enjoy those moments when we get to see Ryoko’s vulnerable side though. That’s why episode 6 of the OVA is one of my favorites!

      Nice, yet terribly ineffective. She wore normal clothes to blend in with the normal citizens in 2 of 3 Tenchi movies, but she still has the unearthly hair, eyes, and ears. :D

I really like the cosplay pics, ryokrazy, she pulls them all off so well imo, but the biker/Tenchi Forever one is just dead on & somehow, seeing her in more “normal” clothes adds to that allure of maybe, juuuuust maybe, you could see Ryoko just driving around the street, going about her business, & if you did, that is what she’d look like.

      My thoughts exactly. Looking at those pictures makes you feel like you could run into Ryoko and it wouldn’t be unnatural at all.

      I can say Petrea once told me she was awed by Ai Orikasa’s presence. Not as a person, per say, but just the way she knew how to handle a crowd. So I can only assume they were indeed at the same con at least once.

      Good question. & ‘no’ I’m not just saying that because I’m a Ryoko fan and want to see that 😆 because clearly, it’s unexpected/forced on Tenchi via Ryoko, so it’s not like it would be saying right off the bat “look! Tenchi and Ryoko, end of discussion” (that’s the last thing Kajishima–or most of us, for that matter–would want).

      It’s bold and brash, in the heat of the moment, and unexpected, all qualities conducive to Ryoko as a character, so imo, not only would I like to have had it this way, but I think it also would have fit. But oh well, still love the ova’s, they’re perfect the way they are.

      Thinking aloud, maybe it’s to provide more of an air of neutrality to the love triangle (err, quadrangle)? I mean, it’s not like they were doing it to tone it down for kids or anything (full nudity bath scenes, among other things, suggest against that angle) 😆

      Actually they didn’t, in either of them, lol

      In the show (Universe) it cuts off right before it would happen (classic TV move)

      The game however for a long time was uncertain, thanks to good ol Punistation’s “unique” humor, however, the game clip in question from “Mimiri Onsen Yukemuri No Tabi” has been ripped fully, and every video from each disk watched (and available on our Youtube channel), in 2 videos they get close, but just like in Universe, it is stopped before happening.

      Well, you know there’s quite a bit of this in the manga series, but that’s for another thread! :Cheeks:

      Anyway, I too would be thrilled to see more of Ryoko’s life before she joined up with the gang, although really the same can be said for each member of the cast! One of my favorite parts of TiT is actually the brief view we are given of Ryoko as a space pirate, and the nature of that profession in the universe. Such a concept would be difficult to work around in the OVA continuity, largely because Ryoko was little more than a puppet of Kagato’s during her space pirate days. I would most like to see this done in the Universe continuity, mostly because she isn’t all-powerful in that line, in fact, she’s just another pirate. The real reason I would love to see this particular version though can be summed up in one word: Nagi! Seriously, Nagi is an amazing counterpoint to TU Ryoko, and she was criminally underused in the show. The implications of their history, and the world building that cold be accomplished by it, is peppered all throughout the show, and now it’s just waiting to be picked up and expanded on!

      BTW,there’s a gag in vol.5 of The All New Tenchi Moyu manga page 163 where Ryoko pulls a fast one

      on Aeka and Aeka forgets all about episode 7 of the OVA where it’s first stated that she doesn’t have any

      taste buds(according to Washu). 😆

      Sasami certainly could teach her how to cook and keep house.The problem is getting Ryoko to clean.

      I think she’d be willing to learn to cook just to please Tenchi,but getting her to clean house is another thing.

      I love Ryoko for all the reasons stated on the first page pretty much.

      She’s a perfect balance of tomboyish/independent bad girl while being feminine and has a soft spot. Really there is no other character like her, she’s one of a kind.

      And half the reason I love the character so much is because Petrea Burchard has the PERFECT voice for her! I cannot watch anything Tenchi related if Petrea isn’t Ryoko.

      Good question. Your opinion is valid, thus I can’t say mine weighs any more heavily than yours, but my response would be she was playing around with him. The rooftop? She’s laughing merrily as she blasts energy bolts at Tenchi just sparsely spaced enough between intervals to allow him to narrowly escape. Tenchi being terrified probably delighted Ryoko (she did say she was a sadist, after all). Plus, she’s been stuck for 700 years! She needed to unwind a bit.

      Now, when she saw sword Tenchi, did she get serious at that point? I’d say definitely, that thing symbolizes some bad memories for her.

      Opponents of my “theory” will state that Ryoko was only interested in Tenchi after she realized he had sword Tenchi. This was later proven false, as we see via flashback, Ryoko had taken an interest in Tenchi’s life far before he had any knowledge of an heirloom that, for all intents and purposes, would have remained out of his possession for his entire life (if he’d listened to Grampa).

      On top of that, as a preemptive defense to “why wouldn’t she want to kill Tenchi?” the more logical query would be what purpose would she have for killing Tenchi? Or more importantly, what motivation would she have for doing so (even if she wasn’t crazy in love with him)?

      The verbal taunting on the part of Ryoko, along with her gestures, actions and our accumulated knowledge of how powerful Ryoko actually is (though not her original, the pseudo-gem she possessed granted her much power) and her personality in general all lend towards my belief that she didn’t genuinely want to kill Tenchi at any point.

      An analogy I’ve used before: Ryoko is very childlike in certain ways, no? (not in a creepy way, but rather she’s immature despite her advanced years). Not to say this can’t happen with both sexes, but I’ve found girls tend to think about relationships, marriage etc. far sooner than boys do, by and large (yes, they tend to mature physically sooner, but we’re talking even before that). Dunno’ why, but it’s true.

      So fellas, remember the girl that would always tease you and pinch you and occasionally trip you or push you on the ground outside at recess, giggling as she did it? At that age, we boys can’t fathom why on Earth anyone would behave that way (other than “she must hate me”) but very often the case is she liked you. Girls (particularly more boorish ones, e.g. Ryoko) will often act seemingly cruel towards the boy they actually have a huge crush on.

      So, amplify and apply that to an energy-wielding, sword-bearing, flying demon caller from space, and you’ve got yourself Tenchi Muyo! Episode 1.

      The only reason I can think of her attacking Tenchi is that she’d been locked up all that time and had a grudge against Yosho and by extension his entire family.Also she did want to get the gems from Tenchi

      and Ryoko being Ryoko she wasn’t about to ask politely for them.

      I think that at the end of episode 1 of OVA 1 she just figured that the best way of getting the gems was to

      seduce instead of killing Tenchi which is why she changes tack and winds up in his bed instead of trying to take his head off.

      Pii actually showed this to us yesterday and it is quite interesting because it’s a full 8 months before the first episode of OVA1 aired. Unlike most “cameos” this one can be attributed to a single animator throwing it in for funzies because it is a single frame of animation that in no way, shape, or form flows with what is actually happening. A very interesting piece of history as this is the first anime appearance of Ryoko.

      That’s interesting, it’s kinda the opposite with me: I don’t not like Ryoko of course, but looking back it makes sense that I really got hooked on her when I did. I was young, living at home under house rules and my biggest obstacles in life were usually school/homework related; Ryoko was fun, crass and didn’t abide by anyone’s rules. She symbolized freedom.

      My recent viewing of El-Hazard OVA yielded some interesting and unexpected results. Though I’ll always be a Ryoko fan, and I generally adore any related character archetype in other works, if I were brutally honest, surprisingly even to myself the character I naturally gravitated towards in this particular Magnificent world was “plain Jane” Nanami. I thought to myself “why? Why not the arguably more Ryoko-esque character Shayla Shayla? Or Ifurita? (Or dat bugrom queen…whoops already typed it, it’s out there).” I think it’s because at this stage in my life, with the uncertainties of job searching and the insecurities of paying bills, worrying about future, etc., I no longer inherently crave freedom but rather security, and Nanami outwardly personifies the typical take-home-to-meet-the-folks gal.

      This leads to the interesting question as to what Ryoko would look like if she had red hair like her ‘mother’ Washu.

      Oh man, these new character design reveals give me mixed feelings. I’m glad to see the original girls back, but Ryoko… what have they done to your hair? It just doesn’t look like Ryoko, I don’t know. It’s not bad looking, just… hard to get used to this after like 20 years of Ryoko looking the same. Her hair could be more relaxed once in a while but if it isn’t more spikey, it just isn’t Ryoko for me.

      But not gonna lie…

      While it can definitely be argued that the animation of old is mechanically better than it is now (and for the most part it is worse today), art has been and will always be subjective, and while this is not my perfect “look” per say of what I want from Tenchi, it isn’t anymore deviated than Tenchi in Tokyo, if Ryoko’s hair was in the same style as her classic design, you couldn’t tell the difference between this art and the OVA3 promo art made over 10 years ago.

      Really it’s a small wonder (but no mystery) that Tenchi was able to hang onto its “old” look for so long, and in my honest opinion, it needed a facelift, especially if it wants to bring in new people to the franchise.

      I can’t even tell you how many people who only watch newer anime across all kinds of sites posting the news that have said they might give it a shot because it looks like something “they” watch.

      You are absolutely entitled to your opinion, and I’ll still reserve judgement for the show until it comes out, but the art itself I think looks fantastic.

      But you’re right, art is subjective. But I think there’s no doubt some episodes of Universe, OVA, etc; had higher quality art than others. This is of course due to different animators/artists taking turns on different episodes; the styles vary episode to episode. Some people don’t even realize this which surprises me, I’ve pointed this out to some very casual anime viewers and they weren’t aware. butts1

      edit: Also, an early (gonna have to wait till we see the actual show for a more fair) comparison of what I’m sort of referring to: art detail. idk, in my eyes the older Tenchi looks nicer. Not that the new one is bad.

      If you look at the profile shots they have for everybody, they know exactly who these girls are, and Ryoko is going to be more Ryoko then we’ve seen from her in a long time.

      It’s important to note, that this came out in the August 2005 edition of Anime Insider, around the time OVA3 was being released over here, so Kiyone was not included in the poll.

      Though it is interesting that she could no longer derive much sexual pleasure. Taking the novels as canon for the moment, would that still have been the case during the time of the OVAs, and she just wanted some rumpy-bumpy with Tenchi because she loved him? Or would breaking from Kagato’s control, losing her gems, and/or being dead for a few hundred years (or some other reason) have reset this “protection” on her brain?

      I assume we don’t have answers for those questions. Then again, skimming the synopsis, it seems she had a poor sense of taste as well and could only get drunk with much difficulty, neither of which seemed to be the case during the OVAs…

      So Ryoko is probably a demisexual in that case. (From what im seeing here anyway) For those who dont know what that means it basically means someone who doesn’t really experience sexual desire until a strong emotionally bond is formed. So it’s in between being sexual and asexual.

      I think we’re both interpreting this different ways. I took it to mean she simply wasn’t feeling much of anything because there was literally something done her brain, not necessarily that she didn’t have the desire. Judging by lines from the synopsis, a number of her senses were dulled at that point.

      True that. Though I think owning the DVDs makes up for lack of having audio. The only thing is with

      titles that I don’t own like Karin,but that’s off topic.

      Overall because I’ve watched most of Tenchi subbed or raw I am more used to Orikasa Ai’s

      version of Ryoko. Though the first time I watched Tenchi Forever it was dubbed,but not sure if Petrea did that or not.

      Petrea did do the dubbed of Ryoko in Tenchi Forever, the only time she didn’t do a dubbed of Ryoko is in OVA 3

      Evil Kiyone only has a Mihoshi Special OVA appearance, while Ryoko has violent tendencies and a past in space piracy in all continuities.
