This is just a little guide for any new members and or members who would like to know of all the official video releases for the Main Tenchi Cast Tenchi Muyo: DVD Ultimate Edition(3 Discs, Pioneer, 2000) http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q262/Dagon123/OVAFRONT.png " /> http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00000IBWRThis is the best set to get if your going to go for the first 2 OVA’s and the 7th Episode Special “The Night Before the Carnival”. While it is generally more expensive ($100 to $300), it contains a third disc with tons of extra trailers and line art/sketches etc (If you have all 3 movies you have all the trailers for the most part so its mainly for the actual extras). There are the 4 Geneon Signature Series Discs (Which contain all the episodes just not nearly as many extras), which up until recently have been farely cheap, but with Geneon leaving the American market, Discs 2-4 have become quite rare and I’ve seen a 4 disc set go easily for $100. . Also another quick note, this set is the most notorious for bootlegs, the easiest way to tell if its a bootleg is 1.)The price, if it gos for anything under 100 USD its fake, and 2.) If it doesn’t say THX mastered in the middle or Pioneer in the corner, its a fake, so BEWARE, lol
Tenchi Universe: Complete Collection(8 Discs, Geneon, 2007) http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q262/Dagon123/UNIVERSESET.png " /> http://www.amazon.com/Tenchi-Universe-Coll…n/dp/B000OZ2CUW The most recent boxset release of Tenchi Universe (The first release being in 2000), like everything Tenchi, it also has 8 Geneon Signature Series Counterpart Discs, however unlike the Ultimate Edition, the boxset Discs and the Geneon Sigs are identical, the only thing this set does really is save space and look nice, it generally runs anywhere from 25$ to 50$ (I personally recommend Right stuf inc as they’ve always had the cheapest, best deals and excellent service)
Tenchi In Tokyo: Complete Collection(8 Discs, Geneon 2007) http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q262/Dagon123/Tokyoboxset.png " /> http://www.amazon.com/Tenchi-Tokyo-Collection/dp/B000OZ2CU2 Pretty much the same as the Universe set, Identical to its 8 Disc Geneon Counterparts, slim casing, same pricing, etc
Tenchi Muyo: The Movie Collection(3 Discs, Geneon, 2007) http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q262/Dagon123/Moviefronts.png " /> http://www.amazon.com/Tenchi-Movie-Muyo-Co…n/dp/B000OZ2CVQ http://www.rightstuf.com/1-800-338-6827/ca…74087/4/3110/12 This is the Full movie set, All 3 movies have seen 3 different DVD releases, The first Run Pioneer releases, the Second Run Geneon Signature Releases, and this Movie Collection release. The on disc content is the same throughout each release, the only difference is the actual look of the disc and the covers, with every “Geneon” release the Disc is Red with the Logo of the Anime on the top of the Disc(This gos for all boxsets and Geneon Sigs), the Pioneer Discs were Thermal Printed and look much different, for Example TMiL1 Pioneer Release has Kain on the Disc, with Pioneer Logo and TMiL1 across it with a nice Thermal printed shine, while the Movie Collection and Geneon Sigs are red discs with said logos, So really all it comes down to is what you think looks best in your collection as all of them together no matter how you buy them, cost the same
Tenchi Muyo: The Mihoshi Special/ Pretty Sammy OVA(1 Disc, Geneon, 2002) http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q262/Dagon123/Mihoshis.png " /> http://www.amazon.com/Tenchi-Muyo-Mihoshi-…y/dp/B00006ISA6 The Mystical Mihoshi Special and Pretty Sammy OVA, A cool little side plot with the main cast, almost like the Time and Space Adventures in Universe, Even though it has Pioneer on the Box, it has Geneon on the Disc, lol It can be found for roughly 25$, not bad for 4 episodes
Tenchi Muyo: Ryo-Ohki Complete Series – The Viridian Collection(3 Discs, FUNimation, 2009) http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q262/Dagon123/fun04235300x422.png " /> http://www.amazon.com/Tenchi-Muyo-Ryo-Ohki…n/dp/B001R0AYHG http://www.rightstuf.com/1-800-338-6827/ca…82721/4/3110/12 Where do I start with this one? First off, there have been 3 releases, Each release has had the same content on each disc, The first release has 3 separate Cases and a TIN Box with Tenchi on front (Which originally went for around 80 to 100 bucks, now it gos for 30$ to 40$, go figure, lol), next is the “Complete” Collection, which has Washu on the front, now this latest release, the one released in April, I don’t understand at all. It is the exact same price, exact everything as the original collection release, The only difference is it says “Viridian Collection” on it, and it has a pretty sweet cover, So all in all, this comes down to “Who do you want on the front of OVA3?” lol (Me being a sucker for the Viridian Release cover I had to have it, come on look at Ryoko and Tenchi, That’s probably why that cover is there to sucker in die-hard TenchixRyoko fans, but I still have my tin, lol)
Wheres the Blu-Ray at you say? Well If You can somehow find it in your wallet to keep looking on, then here they are
Tenchi Muyo Ryo Ohki BoxBlu-Ray(4 Discs, Geneon Universal Japan, 2009) http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q262/Dagon123/Blu-rayOVABox.png " /> (Sorry Guys, its now OOP (Out of Print) but the single releases are still available!)Wow, awe inspiring right? lol This Blu-Ray Box is the equivalent to our Ultimate Edition DVD except much more epic lol, it also has the standard 4 seperate Disc release like the Geneon Sigs (With the same covers too, lol), There are a couple things about this set that are puzzling, first off, Unlike the Blu-Ray Movies, The OVA Box (And the single case releases) have no English or Japanese Subtitles, There is English Audio and 2 Japanese Audio tracks but no subs whatsoever, so If you liked the Subbed version looks like you’re going to have to deal, lol the next puzzling thing is, both CdJapan and YesAsia say there are the standard 13 episodes, and then a special 14th episode and a “sound file”, could this 14th episode be the Mihoshi special?(Recently Confirmed Yes) and is the sound file, the same sound file laser disc with all of the Music Videos on it?(Still Unconfirmed), with a great set of Extras, now heres the downer, Its Import Only, and the price is a whopping 333 USD (You can change it on CDJapan to fit it if you live outside the US) not to mention Importing Fees, And don’t think the Single Releases are any cheaper, if anything buying those are MORE expensive as they average 86 USD a Disc
Tenchi Muyo: Theatrical Trilogy
BoxBlu-Ray(3 Discs, Geneon Universal Japan, 2009) http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q262/Dagon123/MovieBlu-raybox.png " /> http://www.yesasia.com/global/tenchi-muyo-…-0-en/info.html http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/detailview.html?KEY=GNXA-1070Still Awe Struck? Me too, lol This Blu-Ray Box trilogy of the Tenchi Movies is quite nice, On top of the Movies it comes with 4 pages of Liner Notes, and limited edition reprint brochures from when each movie was released, There are also Single releases of each movie which all have the same cover art except for Manatsu no Eve which instead of having the standard “Daughter of Darkness” cover, has a close up of Mayuka with the rest of the Tenchi cast sitting together under a tree eating watermelon, While the Blu-Ray OVA box seems to have alot better Extras this time around, the movies don’t seem to have any different bonus features, but unlike the OVA Box, The movies come with both English AND Japanese Subtitles, which is kind of strange, but hey at least they still have both English and Japanese Audio, again the Only downers are Import only and the box is 265 USD (Yes Asia is considerably less on Single releases though, TMIL2 is only 45 USD there while at CdJapan its a whopping 90 USD)
Well thats the whole Main Cast Set, hope this guide was helpful

Yep, and while it may seem kind of frivolous, it definitely made it more shelf friendly back in 07 when it came out, unlike 90% of Media Blasters and FUNimation’s catalog xD

Correct, the 14th episode is Mihoshi Special and Soundfile is a copy of the music video laserdisc of the same name. With two exceptions, track 8 is not included [creditless OVA1 ED]. Nor is *bonus* track 9, which was just Sasami & Mihoshi’s VAs announcing Night Before the Carnival & Mihoshi Special.
Also, in case anyone is wondering, yes Here Comes Jurai Part II is included too. But I do not believe the English audio track for Mihoshi Special is included on the discs. If it is, the groups that ripped it conveniently forgot to include it. [On another note, the audio track from the R1 DVD syncs perfectly.]
-
- June 18, 2011 at 2:05 AM
Thank you for confirming that for us I will change that in the main post Also on the subject of the release group not including it, if I’m not mistaken, THORA released the Tenchi OVA Blu-ray set (I know they released the 3 movies) and they do sub ONLY regardless of it had an english track or not (as I’m writing this Idk if its them I’m just assuming) that would explain why it was dropped, if they were involved
-
- June 18, 2011 at 12:23 PM
Nah, THORA did not release a copy of Mihoshi Special. Henshin released raws with the English tracks as separate files. But the English track for Mihoshi Special is missing from their release. Which is why I’m assuming it is not included. -

I recently bought the TM OVA 3 3-disc DVD set, and on one of the discs (can’t remember which one), there is a Japanese-audio-only “radio drama” with scene pictures and subtitles. Much like OVA 2’s “Here Comes Jurai Part 2”. Does anybody know what this is or when it was originally aired or released?

You’re welcome. To be honest, probably the Japanese with English subs. At least then I don’t have to suffer through Ryoko’s new voice. x_x
Yeah. Even though she
wasa good voice-actor, she just didn’t quite fit the part like Petrea Burchard did. -

I think that 88 dollars might be a little too much.
I got my
Tenchi Universecomplete collection set for about 54 dollars from an FYEstore back in 2008. Then again different stores have different prices.

Geneon already merged with Universal, hence why they release products under the name, pretty sure they are just playing on the fact most people aren’t in the know to make it look like they don’t NOT have it, lol Don’t hold your breath people

Can you disable the THX effects in the Tenchi Muyo: DVD Ultimate Edition? Honestly, it spoiled to music for me, mainly the OP from OVA 1. It became too organic-sounding. Who even owns the rights to Tenchi nowadays? Is it Comcast/GE NBCUniversal, considering Geneon was merged?

Geneon Universal Entertainment owns the rights to everything Tenchi from OVA1 to Tenchi Forever, in both Blu-ray and DVD,
FUNimation owns the rights to OVA3 and GXP.

Really? See, I had heard that Kajishima-Sensei actually owns the rights to the Tenchi Muyo continuum and its character and so forth. (so OVA TM things, not otherwise, e.g.: Kiyone Makibi)
I read that anime companies buy the rights to use said characters when they need to, and that he still owns the core rights. (sorry for being redundant.
) Can anyone verify this?

That might apply for properties with an original-source manga or novel (or even game) to base the anime on (ex.
Ah! My Goddess). But Tenchi is very much a property, although Kajishima gets to be the producer for OVA-related series.work-for-hire -

I see the Sasami volume of the All New Tenchi Muyo at least once every year at Ohayocon, its either the one they can’t give away or they printed a ton, lol :fry: luckily the Manga isn’t in high demand so the prices for the most part aren’t too inflated like the DVD sets

I didn’t know until 2008. And then I didn’t find out another manga series existed until I was halfway reading the second series.

The manga tends to be even more comedic than the series. One of the funniest stories is the one where Mihoshi has an accident that turns her ‘competent’ for a change. -

I thought I did and went back and looked it up..couldn’t find it. Did some checking and after I saw what was in it I realized there was no reason to own it and I must have though the same when it came out. I have all the other volumes so I have everything except the mini-comics and I can live with that. Had it been a Ryoko collection I would have picked it up for references if nothing else.

Good question, I’ve seen these ‘S.A.V.E.’ dvds for sale, apart from being cheaper, do these have that annoying green logo plastered all over the actual case? Like, can’t remove it? If that’s the case, I hope that’s not how the Tenchi box sets are! (Anyone know yet what they’ll look like?).
If they are like that ML, & you don’t want the big green annoying logo on a piece of your collection (like I wouldn’t, with Tenchi anyways) I’d say try to find old ones if you can & scoop them up (though they may be more expensive). Of course, if FUNI’s gonna’ do the smart thing & have Tenchi box sets in a nice casing & cover, then I’d say don’t go through all the trouble (unless you’re collecting the now out-of-print covers of certain series). If FUNI does this right, there’ll be sharp-looking boxed sets (maybe new design, but retro throwback, idk) without a stupid S.A.V.E. logo all over it, & thus there’ll be a revival in interest of Tenchi and a good amount to go around, thus the days of Tenchi dvd’s being outrageously expensive will finally be over (until these new ones go out of print in the future)

Covers with all the characters and a generic typeface makes these all look like bootlegs. Fantastic, FUNimation. I’m almost certain I won’t be buying or downloading anything in the future. I’m actually surprised it acknowledges Geneon. -
- August 20, 2012 at 10:09 PM
They actually don’t look all that bad to me. They’re not on the level of the original Pioneer and Geneon sets, but they have an appeal all their own. As for them acknowledging Geneon, you can be sure that it wasn’t out of respect for them, they probably had to pay out the nose to acquire these titles even under a joint release with Geneon. -
- August 21, 2012 at 3:13 AM
^The thing is, I didn’t realize Geneon had any U. S. operations remaining. However, you’re right considering how small the logo is. Also notice how subtly it says “THE COMPLETE SERIES,” a concept FUNimation seems to fail at grasping. -

SilverWhisper wrote:^The thing is, I didn’t realize Geneon had any U. S. operations remaining. However, you’re right considering how small the logo is. Also notice how subtly it says “THE COMPLETE SERIES,” a concept FUNimation seems to fail at grasping.
Geneon hasn’t been in the US since early 2007
However I do agree on the cover choices, it’s not that they are inherently “bad” they are just boring, they grab a generic cover from that time, slap it on there and call it Tenchi Universe or Tenchi In Tokyo and while It’s cool, it’s not like the Geneon covers where action is going on or there’s something happening like “Oooo I wonder what Sakuya said to get Tenchi to turn around like that” or “Wow the cast is falling, must be a time and space adventure going on”
Having the Tenchi name on half the real estate doesn’t help either, just call it “Tenchi In Tokyo” having it say “Tenchi Muyo” on the cover art is especially off putting, then Tenchi Muyo: Tenchi In Tokyo
-
- August 22, 2012 at 5:39 PM
Yeah I have to agree: covers are not only rather plain, but as Silver said, they dolook like freakin’ bootlegs! Oh well, it will just make the original releases that much more collectible and sought after by fans. those who already own them, clutch them tightly!
& the important thing is that the content is what it is (excluding extras, I’m not even going to think about getting my hopes up for anything remarkable in that department being included on these) & seeing as how I am short one complete series of ‘Tenchi in Tokyo’ I just might pick up funimation’s “ugly” boxed set (provided pricing makes it worth it vs originals).
-

Well I know I will be picking up both Tenchi Universe and Tenchi in Tokyo. The only question with them and others that I want to get like Inuyasha:The Final Act and Kaleido Star is when should I think of getting them?
I don’t want to wait too long but I also don’t want to get caught in the crush.

I know I’m definitely the Universe and Tokyo sets. I’m gonna hold out a bit longer to see if Funi will be releasing Blu Ray sets for the movies and the OVA. -

I don’t have a Blu Ray player so it’s pretty obvious I’m only going for the DVDs. -

At the risk of losing an eye, I’d like to point out that being a fan isn’t about material possessions. It’s about a deep appreciation for the original work itself that inspired the purchase of a collection of merchandise. Although, I feel that way mostly because I’ve never been much for the material. Anyway, my collection consists of the OVA, Univers, and TiT DVDs, along with a newly acquired Ryoko costume and wig. Also, I believe the fact that we all devote time to the Tenchiforum in itself serves as proof of fandom. :washu:

*hands out muffins* So I went through my entire table of items and marked how much and where I got them all just out of curiosity.
-Pencilboards (Ryoko/Ayeka, Washu/Sasami, Mihoshi/Kiyone, Okuda group/Sasami). ($20 together) (Otakon)
-Fuku bag, miniature incorrectly coloured Ryo-Ohki keychain plush. ($20) (Otakon/NYCC)
-Art books (Dual!, two Tenchi, OVA art book, Mihoshi/Kiyone character book). (At least $80 total) (Most Otakon and Ebay)
-Sakuya cel (Hey it was $10) (MangaNext)
-Mitsuki poster. (Dual!) ($20) (Otakon)
-Ryoko fan-made keychain ($2) (NYCC Artist Alley)
-VHS- Photon, Magical Girl Pretty Sammy. ($10 Otakon)
-DVD- OVA 1-2, OVA 3 Complete, OVA 3 1, Universe complete boxset (Geneon, 2007 release), Individual Universe DVDs (1,2,3,, Tenchi in Tokyo vol 1, Dual vol 2?, Tenchi Muyo in Love, Daughter of Darkness. ($290) (Sam Goodie, Suncoast, Otakon, Various)
-Tenchi Universe coffee mug, lunch box, Ryoko and Mihoshi keychains. ($25) (Otakon, Kotoricon)
-El Hazard 1 ($5) (NYCC)
-No Need for Tenchi manga (1-12)/All New Tenchi (1-5) Okuda (Japanese) (1300 Y/$15 total) (Bookoff, Japan aka best place ever.)
-English Okuda manga ($70 if they were about $10 each, plus the second vol 1 which was £3. Yes £.) (Various, Ayacon)
-Tenchi doll ($20)
-Rainbow Dash ($6)
-10th Anniversary Coins- came with individual 10th Anniversary OVA 1-2 DVDs so value….?
-Ryoko poster- ($15) at Otakon 2009.
-Soundtrack- ($10) (Idk where it is but I got it at Sam Goody lol)
Doesn’t count stuff I’ve given away/can’t find, lol. Puts me at over $600 that I’ve spent on this franchise… but, it’s not really about the price or actual worth of these items to me, which I’ve acquired over the past decade or so, it’s about what it’s worth to me. Nowadays I’m just so glad to actually find Tenchi Muyo merchandise at conventions or stores. I’m not a pro with Ebay or buying things on the internet, I’d rather acquire things after finding them whilst racing through a temple with lions chasing after me or some kind of Indiana Jones thing…. Or digging through shelves and shelves of manga in Akihabara (which is where I got some stuff, or BookOff), though it’s okay to splurge on some things .

Personally I find Funi’s commercials for the Tenchi Re-releases somewhat lazy overall, but at the very least they will hopefully make all the whipper snappers these days aware of the franchise & interested enough in it to check it out. Also..i’m only 21 and already calling kids whipper snappers, oh no..the internet really does make you older faster!
😮 But yeah can’t wait for them to get around to re-releasing the Movies & the original OVA’s as my copy of Tenchi In Love no longer works properly and I never owned a copy of the last volume of the OVA series.

Golden age comic book bags fit the standard B5 size doujins very nicely. They just need a board to keep from sliding around. -

mitsuki lover wrote:Ah!Yes the good old days of buying comic books. It’s probably a bit hard to find those types of bags any more.
Nah, they’re pretty easy to find locally. Aside from your local indie comic book shops, I’ve found that some sports memorabilia shops carry them too. Or at least the ones around me do. Just make sure the bags & boards are acid free.
UPDATED:If you really want to keep your doujins safe & free of discoloration for many many years to come, the best way to do so it to buy mylar bags & fullback boards. Poly bags are only good for 6-7 years, then need to be replaced, likewise halfback boards are proven to not be as 100% acid free as claimed. The exposed rough side still contains enough acid to damage a comic over a long period of time.
So if you’re just starting off & want to do it right, the best way is to simply buy mylar bags & fullback boards. And truth be told, they’re really not that much more. The only problem is, it appears a lot of indie shops only carry poly bags & halfbacks. At least that’s how it is with the shops in my area. Which is where the internet comes in handy. A company called
makes a product line called mylites, which fits the bill nicely. Only problem is your orders have to be done over the phone… how 20th century of them.egerberEgerber products that should fit most B5 doujins:
-bags-
800M2 8 x 10 1/2 Golden Age Comics
825M2 8 1/4 x 10 1/2 Super Golden Age Comics
-fullback boards-
758FB 7 5/8 x 10 1/2 Golden Age Comics – fits 800
778FB 7 7/8 x 10 1/2 Super Golden Age Comics – fits 825
The super golden age is a 1/4″ wider than golden age, so those should work best with B5 size doujins over 50 pages in size. Thou I have not tested that theory. All my bags are “golden”, I simply left out the board on all my Kamidake Onsens & hacked up two bags to keep my only Nontan Project safe (for now).
Also, right now I simply have BCW “golden” poly bags & halfbacks. I’m simply sharing what I learned with others, so they
hopefullydo it right the first time. Instead of having to eventually go back & spend more money, like I will eventually do. One final note, check with your local comic shop about boxes. I picked up an single short box for $6 or $7, something like that. Sure beats having to order a minimum quantity of 5 like most online retailers want for them. EDIT:Another useful archival product,

Er…mayhem? I gotta say, I like the US cover a little better. That strip of space helps it to be not so…plain (though not by much).
The JP BD cover was already odd to begin with, since nearly every Tenchi cover ever in Japan or the US was fairly busy. Then Japan went all minimalist on the BD set. Not that its a bad thing, but its just a little too plain for my tastes.

I do agree on that point, I think the little strip of space is a nice touch, It was more of a “sarcastic” response to Nobuyuki saying mayhem, however, I don’t think any of the covers until the FUNimation re-releases (OVA3 and GXP included) are really busy in a negative sense (IE They flow together well)

OK guys. Here it is. The OFFICIAL chucklocker review/inside look into the FUNImation Tenchi Universe box set! By now I’m sure you’ve all seen the cover of the box set so I will forgo showing you that in favor of showing you the reverse side of the box, which includes the most comically inaccurate “Continuity Map” I have EVER seen. Seriously, it’s like they didn’t even try to get the continuities straight!
http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff178/chucklocker/Tenchi%20Stuff/2012-09-24164610.jpg " /> Now we come to the inside of the box itself. While the outer cardboard sleeve is nice and glossy, the plastic of the case itself is extremely flimsy. Plus, I don’t like that they were too lazy to print up a little guide booklet to put in the inner sleeve. Instead they just printed the episode list on the reverse of the cover lol.
http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff178/chucklocker/Tenchi%20Stuff/2012-09-24164657.jpg " /> At this point you may be thinking, like I was, that the inside of this box set is pretty damn disappointing, but then we come to this beautiful sight in the back that ALMOST makes it all better!
http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff178/chucklocker/Tenchi%20Stuff/2012-09-24164714.jpg " /> Now that we all have gotten an eyeful of that, let’s turn to the DVD’s themselves. Here are the Menus of each of the four discs.
http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff178/chucklocker/Tenchi%20Stuff/Menu1.jpg " /> http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff178/chucklocker/Tenchi%20Stuff/Menu2.jpg " /> http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff178/chucklocker/Tenchi%20Stuff/Menu3.jpg " /> http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff178/chucklocker/Tenchi%20Stuff/Menu4.jpg " /> As you can see, function over form is the name of the game here. Although I have to say that the background art of the last two menus are pretty sweet! (especially that Kiyone x Tenchi one :Cheeks: )
I do have one MAJOR complaint about the menus, however, and that is the horrendously bad background music they chose to use! Rather than get something that makes sense/is pleasing to the ear, they chose to use that Godawful elevator music from the
! UGH!FUNI trailer for the box setNow to everybody’s biggest question: The extras. Short answer: there are none. Actually, you do get two cool things which are textless versions of the opening and ending vids of the show, but I mean they have been available on YT for years now… Other than that all you get is the stupid funi trailer mentioned above, and a few trailers for other funi sets.
All in all, this is a cheap box set for a cheap price. I suppose that for the price, this is a very reasonable box set, I just wish there were more extra features. Also, that star map on the back is just awful!
Verdict: 7/10.

Thanks for the pics! I don’t think that map is so bad though. I’ve seen people screw up the Tenchi continuities much worse than that. The only thing really wrong with it is that they didn’t connect Geminar to GXP (despite them even mentioning the connection in the announcement PR report). I do find it rather odd that they’re using the name Tenchi Muyo in Love 2 for the third movie instead of Tenchi Forever. Its either a mistake, or they’re planning to go with the original JP name which will undoubtably cause some confusion.
EDIT:
Oh wait, I see now that they forgot OVA 2 or they’re are just lumping it in with OVA 1, but then why bother putting the one in the dot?

Fans screwing up a map is far different then the official R1 company haphazardly throwing a “continuity map” together that holes can be shot through before it’s mass release, lol and yes, the OVA map is just a mess

Hmm, so it appears they really are going with Tenchi Muyo in Love 2 instead of Tenchi Forever. I just found a recently added page for the upcoming movie collection that lists the movie titles and…it uses TMiL2. As I said before,I get the feeling this is going to cause some confusion among the causual fans -

Despite all of the above noted problems I would say it be still worth getting, especially if it’s the only version avaible.

Small but impressive. -

😮 I didn’t mean for a second that people shouldn’t buy this set! The price is simply too good and the previous releases too rare/expensive to warrant any but the most devoted fanhunting them down. I simply wanted to make my case that funi really missed a golden opportunity to make a good impression on our fandom to which they have only just entered. I just think that they could have easily scraped together SOME extras for us, or a less bare bones menu. Allow me to set the record straight that I recomend this set to any and all who dont already own a TU setand dont have the money to buy the pioneer/geneon releases. -

I don’t see the problem.
Please explain.
:ghost: Yeah, I don’t want to rain on an otherwise fantastic parade lead by chuck (great, informative review) but as far as bare-bones accuracy, I don’t notice where it’s necessarily ‘wrong’ or ‘inaccurate.’ Granted, it’s a bit vague perhaps with Geminar so far out of the way, but on the other hand it isn’t really connected with any of the cast of Tenchi, sooo…yeah, sorry, I just wanted mainly to point out I’m glad I’m not the only one a bit in the dark here.
But again, thanks 1,000x chuck, now people know what they’re getting, and as far as the price goes, and seeing how, at the end of the day, the content itself is still our beloved Tenchi Universe, it’s a good buy for the cheaper alternative to hunting down the more collectible original sets.

FUNimation trailer for the movie BD set is up. The cover art can briefly be seen at the end. Like the OVA set, its using the same art as the JP set (in this case, the frequently used TMiL poster, which also means we may get TMiL2 art on the back) http://www.funimation.com/tenchi-muyo-movies/trailer/movie-collection-limited-edition/5300781 Also up is the OVA trailer, showing what appears to be color-corrected cover art.

The only thing with all these releases is, I’m happy with the DVD sets I already have from Geneon still. I still feel the only box set I might purchase is the Tenchi in Tokyo one… and if they offer the third film separate. I have everything else. Now, if in the future, Funimation got ahold of the Mihoshi Special or either of the Pretty Sammy series… then I would buy. Or Dual, or Photon.

No, only the first 2 OVAs (eps 1-13).
OVA 3 is owned by a different company than the first 2, so there are legal reasons for why they wont be bundled together. It also wasn’t animated in HD anyways.

More info on the andMovies sets.OVABoth LE’s will include an artbooklet, which is awesome.
Unfortunately it appears they’re both scant on bonus features. The Movies only have trailers, I would’ve figured they’d at least include the Christopher Franke interview with the first film, but it doesn’t look like it will be there. In addition to trailers the OVA set also includes a “Calligraphy Storybook”, whatever that is. I’m a but disappointed they weren’t able to get the numerous special features from Geneons original set.
But oh well, I doubt many of us were planning to buy these for the bonus features anyways…

Knowing their track record on dubbing, you’d be luck to see it by summer, but I would shoot for the fall season next year. They tend to sit on a finished show for really no reason, and then suddenly release, but just because the show has been subbed, doesn’t mean the dub process is going to be near anywhere as fast, especially since this is FUNimation lol.

I remember getting the DVD boxset for a whopping $13 dollars 2 years ago it was in a used record store, fellers had no idea what they were selling! I was too lazy to resell it and it looks like I really missed out . I have 2 copies now, one bootleg signed by Petrea Burchard and then the official set. Not sure if I want to triple-dip for the blu-rays, but I will probably upgrade the movies. Here’s hoping Mato gets to retranslate the flagship series! -

The old Geneon DVDs shouldn’t be too hard to find. Last I checked, Rightstuf still had
In Lovein stock. But Geneons DVDs were pretty poor quality and letterboxed if I remember right. FUNi’s will most likely be Anamorphic and superior in quality if they don’t screw up the DVD authoring. -

I got the Geneon Classics repackage of Daughter of Darkness and was always disappointed it didn’t have the encyclopedia the Pioneer edition of the same DVD did . I read your post in that thread but I STILL don’t understand your undying hatred of FUNimation… oh, and also, according to Nobuyuki the subs are same old so that’s not even much of an upgrade. bkev wrote:I read your post in that thread but I STILL don’t understand your undying hatred of FUNimation…
TL:DR
What people think FUNimation is doing for them “as a favor to the fans” is what they should be doing as their standard, they don’t care about their voice actors at all (I know, I’ve talked to them) nor dub continuity (and no it’s not budget concerns), they have terrible encodes and packaging (probably doesn’t help the disc pressing is done in Mexico…) and to top it all off, they are still upscaling inferior video and audio to blu-ray discs, still, lol (and this is as brief as I can get)
Is my dislike a little more clear? lol
bkev wrote:oh, and also, according to Nobuyuki the subs are same old so that’s not even much of an upgrade.
Yea, they are only the old subs put over the video (or dubsubs, I’ve seen the OVA subbed once years ago so I can’t say whether it is either so)
-
- November 15, 2012 at 2:38 AM
From what I recall they’re not fulldubtitles but they deviate very infrequently. I just find it interesting that their VAs are supposedly so open about distaste for the company but continue to make con appearances and do panels for them. And their encoding is MILES above what it used to be; dropping alternate angles really helped, apparently. Also, dragonbox. That alone gives them a notch up from me lol.
Agree to disagree I suppose. They wouldn’t be my choice company but I prefer them to VIZ as the latter *still* releases edit-only products.

Not that I’m saying I wouldn’t hate to see it nor am I knocking the titles, but they don’t have mainstream anime fan marketability now, and FUNi only looks at what they know will literally sell-itself (or was so cheap they’d be burning money NOT to grab it)
The Pretty Sammy OVA and TV are out because Magical Girl without a Madoka twist or Bakemonogatari zaniness is a dead market (even if they put “IN THE TENCHI UNIVERSE” or “FROM THE TENCHI UNIVERSE COMES”) If people don’t see Ryoko, Tenchi or Washu, the majority aren’t going to bat an eye (and it is the majority, FUNimation recently did a poll to see, hence why all of their online ads have focused on those 3 primarily, lol) The fact the Mihoshi special was left out of the OVA release means the possibility is there, but when it comes to FUNi, their is no such thing as hope.
Dual is out because, well, the same reason above, If you really want to see these titles picked up and re-released, I’d bet on Nozomi/Right Stuff grabbing them, or Discotek

Thanks for the post, but I don’t honestly expect reps to know anymore then we do (if not less, they are reps, almost like shady used car salesmen, except without the shady).
Nope, Right Stuf is a distributor, and Nozomi is the licensing branch (They’re starting to really pick up steam and grab more sought after titles). I threw them up because they picked up El-Hazard: Wanderers, which is in the same ilk as these titles.
Like I said the Mihoshi Special / Pretty Sammy OVA combo is great for Tenchi fans, but The greater OVA and associated spin-offs are easy to sell to random joe blow who saw 10 minutes on Toonami 10 years ago or some random fan who heard about it from his older brother, who are only going to see at face value “1 Episode of Tenchi and 3 episodes of Magical Girl Sasami”

but continue to make con appearances and do panels for them. You think FUNimation pays any of those voice actors to make appearances? lol The voice actors are ASKED by the con to show up, the voice actors then pay out of pocket to go to the con, and generally the con compensates them by paying for their room, they are doing it for themselves and for the fans.
Bkev, I can deal with the shitty encodes, I can deal with FUNimation lying to my face about upscaling their garbage, but the reason I’m so vehemently against them, is because they treat the voice actors, the people who make your favorite show worth watching, and make those chartacters come to life, like slaves. When you talk to these people face to face, like Greg Ayres, like Amanda Winn Lee, like Chris Sabat, these people aren’t a bunch of snobs, this is their life, it’s something they love doing, they are fans as much as we are, and FUNimation doesn’t care about what they do, who they play, much less them as a person, as long as they can milk your nostalgia and pay these fantastic people nothing and make maximum profit, they will continue to do it.
So you can do as you please, but I don’t support bullshit like that, look up the Badlands Rumble incident, and go talk to these people if you get a chance, I wish more people would, it would broaden their horizons a little bit.

Absolutely right about the cons! Guess I forgot how they work… point retracted. I try not to speak with misinformation and I’m the first to admit when I’m wrong. On the Trigun incident, it’s unfortunate. But it’s unfortunately nothing unheard of. SEGA did the same thing to Ryan Drummond; he was asked to reaudition for Sonic after they chose to forego the 4Kids actors and was told that he
nailedthe audition. Literally told “welcome back” and then refused to quit his union and was .promptly recast without noticeIt’s no excuse but FUNimation is certainly not exclusive in treating voice actors like shit. I don’t want to start a fight or anything so I’m going to keep my mouth shut from here on out.

After Geneon made them wait 2 years for their merger with Universal to wrap up, I’m hardly surprised by that. Actually I never expected them to license any of it anyway. The market for aging anime is too small. And Pretty Sammy was never a sales hit, over here, to begin with. -

But see your making the excuse “Because other people do it, that makes it ok for FUNimation to do it, so deal” which is a fallacy.
The difference between us is, you see it as a situation where you lose either way, so you take it, and buy it and support it anyway. I’m a consumer, if I don’t like what a market or a business sells me, I use my right as a consumer to tell them, with my wallet, I won’t buy from them again if they keep doing the same business practices, and I tell others of said bad business. If enough people do that, it makes an impact and a difference, but everybody thinks they don’t matter in the equation and or they just can’t BARE not to own that set, well guess what? If you support it, you deserve to get treated like that, simple as that. So we’ll end the discussion here

To me he seems to be waffling as to wheter or not they will have any future licensing of Tenchi titles.
In other words they may or may not depending on how well or badly the current titles sell.
That said,I actually think Nozomi would be a better choice to revive Dual. After all they do have

How odd to hear FUNi doesn’t have the Mihoshi Special. Since its already available remastered for Bluray I would’ve thought they’d get it automatically when they got the BD rights for the OVAs since it was lumped in with the OVA JP BD set (then again, I’m no expert on the intricacies of anime licensing ). I guess that means its treated as a seperate license? Wish the OOP Geneon DVD was cheaper or I would just buy that, same goes for the JP BD set, but I simply can’t afford it. Not that the Mihoshi Special alone is even worth the several hundred dollars it would cost me to import the OOP(?) boxset.

The thing is (and I wondered this too) was the fact they got the rights to the Blu-ray sets (which had the Mihoshi Special) but the fact they didn’t get the DVD rights (as those were with the Pretty Sammy OVA combo) how would that work? Looks like they didn’t get the special features of the BD OVA set so I would assume that went along with them? Who knows, but the fact remains that yes, they won’t have them (As I hold my JP Blu-ray set high with it on there Mwuahaha, lol)
Also, looks like the cheapest copy of the Mihoshi Special / PS OVA combo on Amazon used is 39.99, I bought my copy new a few years back for 28, It’s honestly not a bad deal and it’s also not has hilariously inflated as the original OVA and Universe set.

No, because the Japanese bluray release does not include English subtitles. It does come with dual audio, Mihoshi Special & Sound File thou. Also the Japanese release would set you back about $250, whereas Funi’s release can be had for around $50.

They picked up SMGC years ago, and from what I’ve heard it didn’t sell very well. Though I hate to admit it, thats as good a reason as any not to pick up the other Pretty Sammy stuff. They could always change their minds and pick up at least the PS OVA (which is dubbed) if their Tenchi rereleases sell good, but I’m not holding my breath.
As for the Mihoshi Special, thats anyones guess.

And you would be correct, it sold horridly (Right-Stuf probably couldn’t even give it away, both seasons for 10 bucks or less and it’s still there) It also didn’t help that (and I mentioned this earlier) It doesn’t have the main Tenchi cast or the shelf movers on the cover (Changing Sasami’s name to the phonetically correct, yet goofy sounding version didn’t help either in the dub)
The Mihoshi Special probably had to be bought with the Pretty Sammy OVA as a combo (That’s what the license was here, and as they are owning the licenses to the OLD products, not really the product itself per-say) and knowing FUNi, not grabbing the extras from the Blu-ray probably saved them a fair amount of money as well, so I’m doubtful they are going to buy an extra license or 2 for your convenience when, as it’s even been shown here, most people really don’t care enough about it to warrant another purchase.

Are we sure MS and PS had to be licensed together? You might be right, but I always assumed Geneon probably thought it would simply be a better idea to bundle two short OVAs from the same franchise together than to release two seperate DVDs of 1 and 3 episodes each, each a bit scant on content (moreso MS, since its only 1 episode).

I know it’s weird because you might think “Oh well they are 2 different shows” but the product they are is a single license itself (as Geneon released it), so in order for FUNimation to get the Mihoshi Special on DVD, they would need to license that particular DVD with the Pretty Sammy OVA as it’s own entity, and release it as such, but it’s a lot harder to try and sell that then bundle it. Now FUNimation is bundling the OVA DVD+Blu-ray, but probably as per licensing, they can’t release them together with different content per medium, so the Mihoshi special couldn’t be on the blu-rays, as they didn’t own it at all.

Well, I submitted a question afew days ago regarding the Mihoshi Special to which has people from FUNimation, and it made it into the podcast (at about the 1:17:50 mark)this weeks ANNCast!!! They said “stay tuned” which sounded like a generic PR reply to dodge the question, but then they go on to say that do want some of the Tenchi stuff that they don’t have and that there are “plans in the works” that they can’t talk about yet. Make of that what you will.
EDIT:
And the mystery deepens it seems.
for the Tenchi OVA combo pack, and on the right side of the page it features several screenshots. Is it just me, or does one of them appear to be Pretty Sammy from the Mihoshi Special?ANN now features a big ad -
- December 2, 2012 at 7:11 AM
I wouldn’t get your hopes up based on an ad alone. Back when FUNi sold DBZ in widescreen, they used screenshots from their original *PROPER* 4:3 singles releases on the boxes. Thank God for the Dragonbox… though I held off on them because of lack of dub score. Just glad we have ’em. -
- December 2, 2012 at 5:09 PM
Dude, congrats getting your question on ANNcast! That’s awesome! I hope that they do eventually get them, just after I drop the cash on the current OVA boxset, lol! I suppose my only two options at this point are to keep using the forum’s YT account (and live in fear that Bandai Chanel will take it down) or drop some cash on the pioneer/geneon release, but last time I did that was with the movie set and FUNI announced their rereleases a month later, lol… Well, at this point it’s just wait and pray time. At least I have my Star Blazers sets to pass the time -

Basically it states that if you own something on one medium, you own the rights to it on all mediums.
e.g, I bought a tape, so I can legally torrent-download the album and burn a CD.
By the word of the law, this should give me legal rights to download a BluRay-resolution digital copy because I bought a VHS tape, but that’s where it gets disputable. (Especially since the new stuff is re-releases, versus the tapes being original.)

Never heard of that law before, but if that’s the case, I’m fairly certain United States doesn’t have one (i.e. in that scenario, just because you own it on dvd doesn’t give you any right to it in any other format at all).

Uh… no, not Youtube. Pretty sure this would only apply to downloading it for personal use. This is all a big grey area though, and as wwwwhhhhoooo said the US likely doesn’t have any such law.

Meeeeeeehh…I’m no expert on torrents and such, but what are we talking about here? Torrenting for “personal use”? What’s the purpose behind torrenting? I was under the impression it’s to share with others. Potentially,
lotsof others. Likely even people you don’t know or would never even meet. I don’t think that’s quite the same as if I bought something on iTunes then burned it onto a cd for my own personal use in my car stereo. If it’s distributing something without cost, that’s bound to upset people that get money from the sales. I’m not saying “no, I’m right darnit!” or even “don’t do this you’ll get in big trouble!” but what I’m saying is heaven forbid you find yourself in this sort of sticky situation, I don’t recommend hiding behind the defense of “I bought the VHS, therefore I can legally torrent it” because that’s a no-go from the viewpoint of the copyright holders.*
With the internet nowadays, though, it’s tough for copyright to keep up.
*NOT giving official legal advice!
😉 Also note: since we (myself included) got a bit off-track for this topic, as a point of interest that is on topic, I would recommend (when time allowing) perhaps we update the main page of this thread to reflect the recent Funi additions? So people know what they’re getting/what they look like.

It still does not work quite like that. The copyright laws for analog and digital recordings are not the same actually. The DMCA ignores analog recordings, due to preexisting OTA recording laws [FM radio & cassette recorders].
Since everyone knew analog was dead anyway & it would be too costly to overturn said laws, copyright lobbyists focused entirely on digital and established that the two formats as entirely separate, meaning that ownership of one does not entitle said owner to a copy of the other. And then further placed in stipulations that while the customer buys a
product, they’re actually buying a license. Said license is technically nontransferable, thou unenforced because it would be impossible to track. However, part of that nontransferable agreement includes upgrades to other copies. Meaning that even if you own a copy on iTunes, the DVD, etc you are not entitled to a
free upgradeto another transfer of the same product. So regardless of what you own it on, it’s still illegal to download or share a different version. And on another note, if copyright trolls really wanted to get even slimier than they already are, your comment about personal usage vs public usage unintentionally brought up another grey area; copyright laws for public usage. Radio stations, networks, etc all pay a separate license fee not covered under the standard personal usage agreement, so they could theoretically go after individuals for violating that too.
And while I’ve taken the time to write that, it should be noted that I’m no specialist on copyright laws, nor do all countries observe the same copyright laws. I’ve simply paid attention to enough of the lawsuits going around, for the last decade, to gather up this information into my ole noggin. Big business lobbyists & copyright trolls are the cancer of society. That is all.

Right now Amazon seems to have the cheapest prices. OVA 3 (Anime Classics release) and GXP (S.A.V.E. release) are both $14. The Movie Collection combo pack is $33 (Best Buy also has the movies for this price).

Yeah, that seems to make the most sense, so they just included it as a bonus feature instead of tacking it on at the end of episode 13 like Geneon did. I find it hard to believe that they had access to the omake’s dub, but decided not to use it. Theres only one part that seems strange though, would the omakes dub really have to be aquired seperate from the actual footage, and for such an amount that they wouldn’t bother to actually get it?

It is rather odd that they have the footage but wouldn’t use the dub. But I would imagine it’s license related (Just because you own licensed assets doesn’t mean you can do whatever you want with it, you’re only allowed to release something a certain way). So keeping that in mind, FUNi didn’t get the blu-ray as it was released in Japan, so I imagine their may have been a clause in there saying that if they didn’t get certain assets, they couldn’t use or release others (or didn’t get them as per the deal).

The VHS fansubbed copy? If so, I’m feeling slightly jelly. As a questionably OCD collector, I’ve always wanted a copy of that. But I’ve never actually run into a copy of it. Knowing FUNi, it’s probably a mistake/glitch for the same reason they are missing episode 13.5 for Shakugan no Shana (despite it being on Geneon’s release in both English and Japanese), and forgetting to dub Hellsing: The Dawn. They also forgot shorts on the recent Black Lagoon release. On a recent ANN Cast, Lance (a FUNi representative) didn’t really have much of an explanation for the first two. If the English dub is not on there, they probably simply had no idea the short was dubbed. Someone REALLY needs to bring this to FUNi’s attention. It has one of my favorite moments of the series (Ryoko crying MOMMY!!!!), plus it’s really important to the plot. Maybe it’ll turn up on a future release of the Mihoshi special (something FUNi also desperately needs to release).

Trust me they know, the problem almost always comes down to money, while Funimation is currently the largest anime licensor in the US, they are completely cut and dry when it comes to any instance where they have to pay ANY extra for anything (IE too bad, so sad) According to what JG said when he talked to the Rep with FUNi at Ohayocon, they apparently have to pay extra licensing fees per extra, meaning the original Geneon licenses which were chalked full of them, were probably way out of Funimation’s price range, so in order to get what they have now, they had to negotiate a new license for the products, which is probably why it took so long to get them A. and B. why all extras are non-existant in the new releases.

Now that you mention it, a lot of these glitches are on the Geneon-rescues. It makes me fear that Media Blasters’ reissue of Fushigi Yugi will only have that show’s omake short in Japanese as well.
It’s weird that the Jirai short wasn’t just attached to episode 13 (as it was when I viewed it), and even weirder that they did get it, but not the dub. I suppose it’s no huge deal though overall.

Then again let’s not forget that Geneon at the time had the advantage of being part of a larger corporation, which unfortunately was part of its eventual downfall.Currently there is no such larger entity behind Funi so they have to be a bit more frugal.

It been cool if they could have gotten the Japanese cast to sign as well.Or maybe have each member of the add a message as their character.I wonder what Petra as Ryoko would have said. -

Does anyone know if the Tenchi Muyo!: Movie Collection is out of print? I was planning on purchasing it on Amazon for around $30, but it now says that it’s “temporarily out of stock”. I’m not sure if this means that it’s out of print or that they’ll actually get more in soon. I know it says the same thing about the OVA Blu-ray/DVD combo pack, which is OOP, so I doubt amazon will get any in stock any time soon. I figured that if anyone knew it would be the people of Tenchi Forum. EDIT: Here’s the amazon link:

I know that best buy had the Blu-ray movie set up for 20 bucks some time ago (though I don’t know if it’s still going for that)
It looks like other amazon sellers still have it, Right Stuff still has the LE set as well

Thanks! It looks like Best Buy has it for $30 and it seems to be in stock. http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Tenchi+Muyo%3A+Movie+Collection+%284+Disc%29+%28W/Dvd%29+-+Blu-ray+Disc/6870174.p?id=2604565&skuId=6870174&st=tenchi%20muyo&lp=4&cp=1 I can’t tell if it’s the LE or not, though. Are there any obvious differences between the regular edition and the limited edition?
-
- August 1, 2013 at 2:50 AM
Do you think there’s a chance that this Wal-Mart version is the LE: http://www.walmart.com/ip/22562434?wmlspartner=wlpa&adid=22222222227000000000&wl0=&wl1=g&wl2=c&wl3=21486607510&wl4=&wl5=pla&wl6=19880599990&veh=sem It says limited edition but it also says that the list price is only $33. If it isn’t LE, do you think it’s worth it to find a LE version or are the differences insignificant? The same goes for the OVA, which also seems tough to find in LE.
-
- August 1, 2013 at 3:04 AM
Good grief, that Wallyworld listing is FUBAR’ed. (OK, maybe not so bad… the first time I looked at it there were stars from another movie listed in it. Not that I mind Lewis Black, but I highly doubt he’s ever been in TM!) Tenchi in Tokyo wrote:If it isn’t LE, so you think it’s worth it to find a LE version or are the differences insignificant? You’ll have to ask yourself,
“do I feel lucky?”“am I more interested in getting the show (RE) or the fancy packaging (LE)?” 😉 -
- August 1, 2013 at 3:14 AM
I suppose I’m fine with either, but that’s what I was curious about. Do you have experience with the LE? It seems like the biggest difference is an artbook, which would be cool, but no matter where I look it seems tough to figure out whether they’re selling a LE or RE, so I think I’ll just go with either the Wal-mart or Bestbuy version because they’re cheapest. -
- August 1, 2013 at 3:10 PM
Nobuyuki wrote:This is where other forumites should chime in.
I’ll take up that call! Anyway, my experience with the LE sets is that they are pretty nice. The box is sturdy, the artwork on it is nice. You get both dvd and bluray copies of the material, and trust me it looks like a totally different show in bluray
The art book that comes with is filled with nice pictures, but none that even moderate Tenchi fans haven’t seen before. All in all, if you can get it for cheaper than FUNi and stores like FYE and suncoast are scalping them, I highly recommend getting them. -
- August 1, 2013 at 8:16 PM
As of right now I’m planning on ordering the OVA and movie collection from wal-mart, because they’re about $50 and $30 respectively, which is about as cheap as I can find them anywhere. It says they’re both limited edition, so hopefully they are, but even if they aren’t I’ll just be happy having the series. EDIT: Amazon got a few more Movie Collections in stock at the $30 price, so I placed an order for Universe, Tokyo, and the Movie Collection for ~$75
. I just need to buy the OVA (either from Wal-Mart or Amazon) and I’ll be set. Thanks for the help, everyone! -
- August 5, 2013 at 6:15 PM
I’m still thinking of one of these days getting TiT myself.I don’t know about GXP though.Though right now the only Tenchi I am going to get will be part two of WOG.

Just a heads up to everybody who has Netflix streaming service: Tenchi Muyo! GXP is now up on Netflix watch instant! No other Tenchi series are up there as of yet, but you never know, this might be the first step! *Not sure if this thread is the right place to post this, but I didn’t feel like creating a whole new thread for this. If any mods want to move this/start a netflix or web streaming thread, by all means do so*
-
- September 11, 2013 at 4:38 PM
A streaming thread might be nice. Many of the Tenchi shows (and Tenchiverse shows, like El-Hazard) are streaming on Hulu, Youtube, and/or FUNimation.com. But they sometimes get cycled through, so having an up-to-date list of whats currently available could be helpful, especially to new members who don’t already own the DVDs. If you guys think that’s a good idea I’d be willing to start (and keep up with) such a thread myself.
-
- September 11, 2013 at 6:05 PM
I just checked Xbox Video and most of the Tenchi shows are on there for purchase, and all three movies. If anyone owns an Xbox and wants a digital copy you can buy them there. The only one not on there is OVA 3 aka Ryo-ohki, but that’s no big loss. -
- November 24, 2013 at 8:25 PM
I’m thinking about purchasing the Mihoshi Special/Pretty Sammy DVD for $28, which I found online. Do you guys think that’s worth it, or should I hold out for FUNi rescuing them? I guess if worse comes to worst I could sell my copy on ebay for what I paid RIGHT when FUNi announces their license and then buy their release. I just really want the Mihoshi special in my collection. The OVAs feel incomplete to me without it. I’ve also been enjoying the Pretty Sammy OVAs a lot (about to watch Ep. 3). -
- November 24, 2013 at 9:49 PM
Nobuyuki wrote:Buy it.
I hold no hopes of FUNi picking any of the other Tenchi titles up at this point.
I can’t say I disagree with this. Sure they
mightbut wouldn’t bet the farm on it, and even if they eventually did it’s still cool to have the pre-FUNi releases. -
- November 24, 2013 at 11:12 PM
Alright, I’ll see if I can get it while I can (it is hard to find it for such a cheap price). I might also get the last Pioneer OVA single so I can have the English dub of the Here Comes Jurai Omake (I’m a completist…), but only if I find it for a bargain. EDIT: Got it and just finished watching it. It’s a good release, but I’ll definitely double-dip if it comes out on Blu-ray.

Her name’s Hakua, she was only in the PC-98/FX games. She was a protege of Mihoshi, and apparently had a similar personality to Mihoshi as well. There’s only a few scant details about her since the games she was in were only released in Japan and she was never very popular.

Wait! Mihoshi had a protege?! It staggers the mind until one reads that Hakua is as ditzy as Mihoshi and then it starts to make sense.Or as much sense as Hakufu from Ikki-tousenalso having a protege(yeah that also happened). Fortunately if it’s game only then the world seems safe.I don’t know if we’d be ready for an anime with 2 Mihoshis in it!

Eh it’s just more so a limited edition type thing. There were only so many made, and it was briefly offered
by a couple places in the states but it was supposed to be a Japan only item.
Hanken promo art cels, even lesser known or desirable ones can be several thousand USD. Animaxis back in the

So, while I was at Chibi-pa with the boys, I suddenly saw a vendor booth that gave me pause. He had not only vintage, battle-worn G1 Transformers, but also an Ayeka figurine! wth2 To say that I coveted this booth would be an understatement.blush1 Sadly, the vendor only took cash, of which I had none at the time. Mediator? mmmm1 I thought that Tenchi being around meant the two would blow each other, and the rest of the room up, leaving poly-plastic pieces, scattered everywhere. (Along with the walls, ceiling, the car outside…Tenchismile ) -

Mmkay… got a bit of an odd one here: LaserDiscs. American releases of… most of OVA 1 and 2 as well as the Mihoshi Special. (I’m missing a disc. Two?)
OVA 1 is actually the Japanese release with a translated version of the back printed out and glued(?) to the back, over the original Japanese. (even though the LD itself is dubbed English. huh.)
OVA 2 and the special are English-only printings, no cover-paper.
Ep. 12, 13, 13.5, an on-disc picture album, and interviews with the seiyu/VA’s are all in a two-disc gatefold that opens up revealing a niiice print of the Choushin. Also, Chisa Yokohama starts her interview in English before switching to Japanese, which is pretty cool!
Here’s another kicker: each volume comes with some large (maybe 11″x11″) sheets in them, an original Japanese and an English translation. They have early sketches, explanations, Q&A, and/or a weird Amagasaki Muyo 4-panel series. (No, I’m serious – it’s there!)
So… yeah. I’m guessing this info should be routed to someone overseeing the archive? I’d toss up some pictures, but my bedtime was.. a while ago…

For good or ill, there’s going to be a Blu-Ray release of OVA 3 in Japan: http://www.seikodo.co.jp/campaign/tenchi3.html At least there’d be ready-made material for any eventual English-language release, even though it’s just an upscale of Standard Definition video.

Shouldn’t be too surprised about that. Sooner or later everything comes out on Bluray. -

I’d be happy with a bd, it’s still better than dvd even if it’s only an SDBD. Or maybe it’ll be like Avatar did on it’s bd release, sd, but better, (dvd compression can go
