We have a Dual-specific crossovers thread, but I figured it would be a good idea to have an all-encompassing thread covering everything in the Tenchiverse and beyond. Feel free to post any references or cameos pertaining to Tenchi and its numerous “cousin” series here, regardless of source (i.e. they don’t necessarily have to be from other Tenchiverse shows).

I’ll start things off with a cameo that threw me for a loop when I found it. Skip to 2:01 in this video: [BBvideo 425,350]
[/BBvideo]http://youtu.be/1imvaTJ0r30?t=2m1s Apparently, Photon has a cameo in Tenchi in Tokyo in which he almost got punched in the face by Ryoko
😆 . We’ve discussed cameos here on Tenchiforum before, but I don’t think I’ve ever heard a mention of this one. I’m not very far into Tokyo yet myself. I wouldn’t have found this if not for that AMV. -

Nice find Wisper! Here’s a page from a DC comic where you can see the kanji of Tenchi Muyo! in the background on the wall of a building.

Speaking of the Tenchi Muyo! kanji showing up in strange places, here is a cameo that shows up, of all places, in an episode of Sailor Moon! http://i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff178/chucklocker/Linked%20Images/Tenchi_zpsf429f347.jpg" /> I’ve just looked, and the episode that this appears in aired only a few weeks after the very first OVA episode! Apparently Tenchi had some very early fans in the production staff of Sailor Moon!

😉 True enough, but in the anime production community (which I imagine is as relatively close knit as the equivalent western tv/film communities) you’ve got to assume that they are aware of the connotations and implications of Tenchi and place them in their work accordingly…

Oh, yay. Here I go. (‘Cause WhisperG threatened me.) The H-Title OVA, “
“, produced by Pink Pineapple in 1998.BeyondI’ve been watching it, and the whole thing is like “Agga Ruter” does “El-Hazard”. (no pun intended.) It actually revolves around the plot and not the adult content, also; one could remove it and there would be no difference in story, really.
It is also Kajishima-funny here and Hayashi-funny there.
Like the main character, the great Demon lord of Darkness and Destruction…
.washing dishesA Tenchi’s-mom-look-alike makes an appearance for one second:
http://i.imgur.com/OY9aK97.png One of the hapless girls in the show refers to the MC as “Tenshi-Sama” [angel], much like Ayeka does to Tenchi.
Aann…dd….d… that’s it! Watch it if you want a funny story about some girls who are somehow able to get hot and heavy with a dude who has steel plates for skin. And horns. And five eyes.
Yeah.

I’ve been re-watching TiT but got off track lately, haven’t gotten there yet…now that I have Photon fresh in my mind, this really stands out like it never has before for me, and I’ll keep a look out as I’m viewing “Toyko” in the coming weeks (good eye there btw). Tokyo has had a couple cameos from Tenchi’s distantly-related series (such as El-Hazard) and it’s clear while it may not be a true crossover by the strictest of definitions, they’re definitely going for Photon here.

As has been mentioned, it appears via the 10th Anniversary box set that the first Tenchi OVA had drawn inspiration from Iczer-One, an earlier series.
We happened to find and watch some of it at Ohayocon ’14, so I will stick
some links here so others can see it and draw their own conclusions about some
(quite) similar scenes and elements.
It’s NSFW, and not light on the nudity or gore, or screaming.

The Tench Connection -
- January 27, 2014 at 1:56 AM
I find Outlanders more influential. If anything, Tenchi is basically its spiritual successor. Still, I love Toshihiro Hirano’s character designs. They should be considered on par with high profile 80s character designers like Haruhiko Mikimoto (his mentor) and of course, Akemi Takada.
It makes me wonder, considering the many aspects from Megazone 23: Part 1 which were recycled for Iczer, was this why AIC decided for Part 2 to have
differentshitty character designs? With the exception of animation assistance, they had nothing to do with Part 1. -

Influential to anime as whole? Yes, but particularly to Tenchi? No
For a long time (pretty much since I brought it up here, lol) the Iczer series has had a close tie to Tenchi, particularly through
Iczer 3(released over here as Iczer Reborn). Not only because of the GLARINGLY obvious influence that Iczer-3 had on Ryoko’s character and design, but the fact that both Hiroki Hayashi and Masaki Kajishima worked on Iczer-3 This is one of the earliest “Ryoko” Sketches from the 10th anniversary Tenchi set

http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q262/Dagon123/Iczerfull381571_zps360c479d.jpg " /> It basically looks like Kajishima took Iczer 1, put Iczer 3’s hair on her and then drew it into a semi-original style, I mean look at this cover of Animenominous, it’s not that far removed from Ryoko, it’s not hard to imagine someone close to production in Japan could spin it easily

Dagon123 wrote:Influential to anime as whole? Yes, but particularly to Tenchi? No
Yes, her appearance is certainly derived from Iczer, as well as the whole concept of synthetic lifeforms wielding power from their hands. I was referring to the themes of Tenchi and Outlanders being comparable, and specifically Ryoko personality. Kahm strikes me as being more similar to her for the fact she falls in love with what appears to be an ordinary man, is oblivious to her destructive nature, and has a complicated past. She is also entangled with the affairs of an extraterritorial empires, clearly paralleling Jurai. Although, that might be taking it a stretch too far.
Understanding that Kajishima was with AIC since its formation, it’s logical to believe he’s worked on most their projects before Tenchi and his decision to go freelance. Iczer 3 was proof of his ability, and essentially the spark, while Tenchi was the fire of his success.

I’ve only seen the first episode of Iczer One, so I can’t really comment too much on how much or how little the franchise influenced Tenchi. I was aware of the uncanny resemblance of Iczer 3 to Ryoko before, and there are certainly more than a few similarities between the shows. I hadn’t heard much about Outlanders before you and Dagon brought it up, Silver, and I’d be very interested in checking it out. At the end of the day, the best any of us can really do is speculate as to what may have inspired the creators of Tenchi, but given the AIC connection it’s probably safe to assume that these shows were at the very least proving grounds for concepts that would be reworked for Tenchi. -

AFAIG the only difference between the Iczer and Ryoko character designs that I see are the ears.Unless I’m missing something about Ryoko’s ears. And Chuck…yeah you should check out
Outlandersif you can. -

maleRanma would have femaleRanma’s feminine hygiene products on him!
😆 😆 😆 Yeah that’s gotta be a hard one to explain. OTOH he could explain away understanding the girl talk by
the fact he’s living with Akane and her sisters.

er…I just noticed something, in the lower panel where Ranma’s running it looks like his pants are a bit undone. Though I do love Ryoko and Aeka’s thinking he’s a weirdo!
I’d really love to see what the girls would do
ifthey ran into Miroku. -
