I dunno’ I just thought of this the other day, thought it might be kinda’ entertaining… It’s like those “You know you’re” jokes you see all the time around the interwebs/tv… They take different forms: “You know you’re from [blank] when [insert clever line]” or “You know you’re a redneck when…” etc. (Or maybe even on a T-shirt from when you were in speech&debate or some other club in High School) .
Here’s an example: “You know you’re from Nebraska when…You constantly gripe about living in Nebraska, but you’d never want to leave.” (meh…it’s kinda’ funny for us NE folk…)
I wanted to see if we could come up with some clever phrases to complete the line “You know you’re a Tenchi Muyo fan when…”
(or if you want it to be for a specific character, like “You know you’re a Little Washu fan when…” or whatever give it a try!)
Within forum rules (duh) I’ll try starting…
You know you’re a Tenchi Muyo fan when…you hear the word ‘demon’, regardless of context, the first thing that pops into your head is Ryoko

When you mention Kiyone/Tenchi Muyo/Anime in a project for Art Appreciation and still get an A+ When you cleverly write a poem about Jurai, without calling it Jurai, for an 8th grade assignment and get to read it for the entire class because your teacher thinks it’s awesome (still need to find where I put that).

desufaceplz I’d like to think so! (seriously, thanks!) As many of you may know, it’s all well and good (and expected, for the most part) in papers to reference others who have gone before you, but in this paper I had a chance to make and reference astute observations that were entirely my own. Given the pool of viewed films at my disposal, and the genre we were working with (comedy) I drew parallels between our favorite space pirate and a character played by Barbara Stanwyck in that both were street-wise, independent, don’t fit the typical mold of an ‘ideal’ female of their respective societies/time periods, and went against the conventional dynamic of “guy goes on adventure, meets up with/and or saves the dame along the way” in favor of the girl
isthe adventure, not just an accessory to it–as well as being a source of trouble, yet equally a source of triumph, affirmation and simply put, getting Bilbo Baggins-type characters out of doors & into the greatest adventures of their lives. An excerpt, if anyone is interested:
http://i1103.photobucket.com/albums/g463/wwwwhhhhoooo/Tenchiforum%20Banners/stanwyck.jpg " /> wwwwhhhhoooo wrote:One such example I thought of (not implying parallels are always intentional—especially not in this case—merely highlighting similarities I personally connected) is with regards to the previously mentioned masterpiece
Ball of Fire(1941) and director Hiroshi Negishi’s animated TV series Tenchi Universe(1995). In both works, a spry, hot-blooded, live-wired criminal uses her wit and charm to hide out with a trusting (and equally charming, in a different way) young male lead while on-the-lam from the law. Of course, what doesn’t figure into her initial plans is falling in love with said main character, and she soon finds herself at odds with her criminal lifestyle and her desire to be with a man from an entirely different world (the irony here being that Gary Cooper’s law-abiding character is, in a manner of speaking, worlds away from the criminal underworld Barbara Stanwyck’s character “Sugarpuss” is from, whereas in Universethe female lead is a humanoid alien literallyfrom an entirely different planet than that of the rural Japanese protagonist). A bit of a stretch you say? Perhaps (I certainly thought that myself) but being a Tenchi fan, I figured why not go for it? (prof is a fan of Japanese cinema, after all).

When you’re still making fan fiction off it, after all these years. And also when you think of it, as better sci fi that ‘sci fi’ made anymore. (Really, the state of science fiction is kinda lacking these days. Syfi just feels like
Horrorfi, more and more, anymore.) -

You have trouble trying to figure out the plot of AI: TENCHI MUYO. you wonder why Ryo-Ohki wasn’t in the new series.
you think that AI: TENCHI MUYO was more confusing than you have thought.
you wished that the new series was call TENCHI MUYO: THE NEXT GENERATION.

gendo1 sakuyafinger1 dawohki1 Kiyofacepalm1 You know you’re a Tenchi fan when…despite your best efforts, you can’t let a comment like this go unanswered.
Here’s my beef with these statements, susano, and please don’t take anything personally: the series IS NOT FINISHED yet! People are entitled to their opinions on something, sure, and if someone doesn’t like
Aiokay…but to say “Ryo-Ohki wasn’tin it” you can’t really say that fairly, as of yet, because although it’s odd she hasn’t shown up as of this writing, she may yet, so it’s pretty unfair to accuse Aiof a sin it has yet to commit. On that note, I can appreciate disliking a Tenchi series being unnecessarily convoluted (OVA 3), but again, past tense,
Ai“ wasconfusing” … WE ARE STILL WATCHING IT! Like, right now! Yes, there’s stuff we don’t know, plants without payoffs as of yet…but come on, would you honestly enjoy a series–and I mean ANYTHING, Tenchi, anime, or otherwise–where you knew everything and had it all figured out beforehand? What would be the point of that? The point of mystery during the initial run is a little thing called engaging your audience, in addition to building suspense…I’ll stop right there, because I shouldn’t have to explain “how to watch a TV show” to anyone able to read this. *drops mic & steps down from soapbox
