Tenchi Talkback: Tokyo’s 20/20

Hey, do you know if tenchi in Tokyo has another part that relates? Manga or anime? I finished it recently and do not agree with the ending haha! I need to know more! Why make such a good show and stop smh

Thanks for asking! Shin Tenchi Muyo! (Tenchi in Tokyo as it was released overseas) seemed to be a one-and-done release, with only a few soundtracks to accompany it.

At least that’s what we thought.

There are, in fact, multiple things that revolve around the Tokyo universe!

The most popular of these is the Shin Tenchi Muyo! Omake Theater, which was an episode cut into three shorts, and originally released on the Japanese laserdisc versions of the show. These would later be made much more accessible (though arguable due to its 1195USD price tag) on the Tenchi Muyo! 10th Anniversary DVD set.

Suchido! Amagasaki!

The “Tokyo Special” as it has been lovingly coined by fans is a fun episode that takes place somewhere in the middle of the series after Tenchi has already made his way to Tokyo. The special takes the show’s slapstick antics to the next level, with the girls stealing Tenchi away from Sakuya, and Sakuya having to try and save him in a Rambo meets Game of Death style escapade. Even though reaction to the episode has been overwhelmingly positive, the episode has not only never been released outside of Japan, it has also never been dubbed, leading to its relative obscurity in the fandom.

But wait, there’s more!

There is not one, not two, not three, but four light novels that take place in Tokyo!

All of which were written by Universe and Tokyo scriptwriter Mayori Sekijima, and illustrated by veteran Tenchi animator Naoyuki Owada, who illustrated the majority of Naoko Hasegawa’s Tenchi Muyo Ryo-Ohki novels. (Animator Fumio Matsumoto is also credited with illustration on three of the novels.)

The first novel to be released was 1997’s Shin Tenchi Muyo!: Sakuya’s Confession.

The interesting thing about these novels, as you can see from the cover, is that they included a mini CD in the back!

Even more interesting is that the first track on each of these CDs is a monologue about the light novel itself: a rare thing in Tenchi. The other two tracks are a unique song for the novel (one with vocals and a karaoke version).

Track 1: Sakuya’s Confession (Monologue)
Track 2: Angelic Temptation
Track 3: Angelic Temptation (Karaoke)

The next novel was Shin Tenchi Muyo!: Sasami’s Prayer.

Track 1: Sasami’s Prayer (Monologue)
Track 2: Friends (Song by Chisa Yokoyama)
Track 3: Friends (Karaoke)

The final novel in the trio of mini CD releases was Shin Tenchi Muyo!: Ryoko’s Heart.

Track 1: Ryoko’s Heart (Monologue)
Track 2: The 14th Moon (Song by Ai Orikasa)
Track 3: The 14th Moon (Karaoke)

All of these novels featured original stories set in the Tokyo continuity, revolving around each of the featured girls.

The final Tokyo novel was released in 1998, and is simply titled Shin Tenchi Muyo!

Though this novel features original illustrations, it does not include a CD like the others (being a part of the same line as the Ryo-Ohki novels.) From the initial look, it appears to just be novelized versions of three episodes from the show. It is, however, available in Amazon Kindle form, for those with an Amazon.JP account.

Unfortunately, as with most things Tenchi, none of these novels have been translated into English. But rest assured, there is more to the world of Tokyo than meets the Ai…..eye.
