Tenchi Masaki (voiced by Masami Kikuchi), the school’s new student teacher. He’s genetically predisposed to getting into trouble.

    http://i.minus.com/ibv59KamnlH2GU.png" />

Ryoko (voiced by Ai Orikasa), the legendary demon who was sealed up in the Masaki Shrine. She has powerful energy stored in her secret gems, and can execute various abilities using them. She has a rather short temper.

    http://i.minus.com/itMbkghi5oTbT.png" />

Ayeka (voiced by Haruhi Nanao), the first princess of Jurai. She’s come to earth looking for her missing fiance. Graceful and mild-mannered by nature, however once she becomes angered, she is extremely frightening. She’s devastatingly bad at doing housework.

    http://i.minus.com/ibse4tUD50FOgB.png" />

Sasami (voiced by Chisa Yokoyama), the younger sister of Ayeka & second princess of Jurai. She has an innocent and cheerful personality. Her skill in housework, in comparison to Ayeka’s especially, is very good. Because of this, she’s taken charge of the Masaki home’s housework by herself.

    http://i.minus.com/ib0EvuHTTs3aam.png" />

Washu (voiced by Yuko Kobayashi), the science academy’s self-designated “Number one Genius Scientist in the Universe”. Though she appears to be very young, she’s actually been alive for 20,000 years or more. She finds herself fascinated with Tenchi.

    http://i.minus.com/ioDibOwKB2oOc.png" />

Mihoshi (voiced by Yuko Mizutani), Detective First Class in the Galaxy Police. She’s got a natural gift for accidents, many crazy and unthinkable things occur around her against her will.

    …and then some newcomers!

    http://i.minus.com/ibiXZnurvQ3V9X.png" />

Momo Kawanagare (voiced by Nao Touyama), Student Council President. She is straight-forward and honest and has a strong sense of justice.

    http://i.minus.com/ibfltkstovaADU.png" />

Beni Kinojou (voiced by You Taichi), the bodyguard of the school science club. She’s taciturn, brave, and confident. She has superhuman strength, like that of an ogre.

    http://i.minus.com/ib0S0aIOMsc9sV.png" />

Hachiko (voiced by Kana Yuuki), Student Council Auditor. Responsible for fighting power. A rather chivalrous spirit with ambition, she’s mainly just courageous. She loves Momo. Anyone who gets close to Momo is her enemy.

    http://i.minus.com/i303cbm8kG9fS.png" />

Hana Saryuu (voiced by Mao Ichimichi), Student Council Treasurer. Responsible for leadership. Plenty of sex appeal. Contrary to her fickle appearance, she is trained in Aikido. Keeps a broad outlook, easily grasps the situation and can get a good read on the matters at hand.

    http://i.minus.com/ibbpduelW6LawD.png" />

Touri Fueyama (voiced by Ai Fukada), Student Council Clerk. Responsible for the brains. Her wisdom overflows. In any situation she can preserve her sanity, retains her coolness and doesn’t panic. Her school record is very good, her grades considered the top of her class.

    http://i.minus.com/ioE3MeN85mrZj.png" />

Yuki Fuka (voiced by Azusa Satou), Science Club Director. Quick-tempered and unyielding. She aims to seek the treasure circulating around the school. She thinks of herself as a rival of the student council.

    http://i.minus.com/ituZN59xbAG1D.png" />

Rui Aoi (voiced by Rui Tanabe), Science Club Member. A shy, timid girl. With a rather large body, her hunger is unusual. She has some unsavory ties with her childhood friend, Fuka.

    http://i.minus.com/i9UEmFdCkXUXV.png" />

Ukan Kurihara (voiced by Ayako Kawasumi), “Sophomore turf!” Teacher. She has the duty of becoming a guide to Tenchi, having been a teacher before him. She uses a whip to coach the students.

The main site just updated and it looks like they will be releasing the show on DVD/Bluray in three spates in January, February, and March of 2015!
Did they say how many episodes they plan on releasing each go around?

They probably do on the page, but we haven’t gotten around to translating it yet. I would imagine that since there will be three releases each set will have about 15-18 eps.
Saw the first episode and enjoyed it.Yes…I am an official Hachiko fanboy now! mmhmm1 mmhmm1

      The same with Hana.

There is now also a AI manga coming in Nov I think the news said.

It is a article at ANN,

though I would guess their translation is probably off.

It’s hard to make out, but the characters next to Kajishima’s name are 原作. This would indicate that he is simply being credited as “Original Work by” as he is with all Tenchi things he doesn’t directly control. If Masaki Kajishima is penning the story, I wonder if this is one of the projects he talked about in 14.08’s afterword. He seemed to not want to have a whole lot to do with Ai, I wonder if AIC goaded him into it?

Negishi has also spoken on twitter about working on the Novelization of Ai Tenchi Muyo, which may end up being twice as long as the show itself.

So I’ve been doing some research on The names of the newer girls and what I found is intriguing:

Momo can mean either Peach or Thighs (It’d be pretty meta if she was “big boned”)

Kawanagare Can be modified to Kawa no nagare no yō ni (Like the Flow of the River)

Beni means Crimson, which is odd (I guess they wanted to make her a redhead at one point)

And while Kinojou is a mountain in Okayama, I looked up the word in translate and was instead given Oninoshiro (Castle of Oni)

Get this, Hachiko is also the name of a Popular Japanese Dog (how fitting)

Hana means Flower (I bet she’s looking to be de-flowered *badum-tish*)

Saryuu means… Grain of sand? (at least in Chinese)

Now I have heard that Touri means Bird, but when I went to translate it changed to TOLI Corporation *shrugs*

Fueyama (Fue Yama) means Growing Mountain

Yuki can be translated to Snow, but I wiki’d this and apparently it’s also the name of Anything you can think of!!

Fuka seems to be Load? So her name can be translated to Snow Load (and now I have Mr. plow in my head)

Rui can either mean class or kind and Aoi means blue so… Blue Class?

Oh, this is interesting; Apparently, Ukan was once a town in Okayama that merged with three other towns to make Takahashi city

and Kurihara is a city in the Miyagi prefecture

Feel free to correct me if I’m wrong (The internet can only do so much)

So there’s been talk about how Ryoko in the two variants seem different in terms of their shape. Some have said it’s the key animators, but I reckoned her clothes played a part. Behold, my over-analysed findings!

It doesn’t seem like it. We’ll probably have to wait for CD’s, assuming we get any at all. I do vaguely recall talk of merch though, so it’s possible.

Here’s the first website. Looks like they’re based out of Europe but they do have an option for U.S. currency and U.S. Addresses when you try to make an account. Alternatively, you can find them on Yahoo Auctions Japan which is where I found the Sasami, Momo, and Ryoko cosplays.

The official site was updated this morning with the final month of the show on the calender. Since the recap episodes are not numbered (something we’ve known about for a while but felt it was too late to correct/would be confusing to those already watching), we actually have four total weeks of new Ai Tenchi Muyo ahead. Good news for those who don’t care much for the recaps, they stop after the 12th. The final two weeks will contain nothing but new episodes until the show ends on December 26th.

A limited edition run of 100.

A fan asked Negishi on twitter, “If you went through all the trouble to revive the series, surely you’d return for another term to do a movie or an OVA?!”

Negishi responded simply, “It all depends on the reaction (to Ai).”

I really hope Ai did well enough to warrant another, more traditional Tenchi series or another movie. Ai didn’t give everyone exactly what they wanted, but if it was able to stir enough public interest… we may see even more of the characters we love.

Agreed. I’ve seen a lot of positive reception as a whole but a lot of the negative reception comes from stuff that can be easily remedied. One of the main issues being the show’s length, which would be mitigated by a movie or funding a regular length TV/OVA show. Another was the addition of the new characters, and some just not clinging to the Student Council or the Science Club that well. By leaving Ai as-is and moving to another story, they could focus on the old girls again like how some fans would prefer.

The massive bursts of happiness from fans upon seeing the old girls show up and the fantastic scenes they had should be what AIC needs to know. There’s still a lot of love for this series, and if they take into account what was “wrong” versus what was “right”, more Tenchi should really be a no-brainer.

      I personally have some mixed feelings about Ai Tenchi but overall I really enjoyed and yes I even enjoyed a few of the new girls which I thought would never happen. People just love to complain and bitch about the little things (me included) but if Ai Tenchi Muyo was made into a full length show or movie I would freak out with joy just because its more new Tenchi and of course i still have questions and I just never want to see Tenchi end (unless Tenchi gets married) but even then I would want to see what happens after. Now. feel like I’m going to be slowly going through lack of tenchi withdrawal and end of a good series withdrawal. ^^;

A few weeks ago Negishi mentioned there would be an explanation as to why the show was published in a 4 minute long, 50 episode format. Today, his tweeting marathon continued with the following:

“About 5 years ago, Inoue (Hiroaki Inoue, one of the main producers on the Tenchi series) had begun to make plans for a (Tenchi) in Love 3. Later on, Miura (Toru Miura, president of AIC) proposed a plan for a Tenchi series consisting of 100 episodes that were 90 seconds long. This was eventually changed to the 5 minute episode framework.

It was absurd to even think about reviving “Tenchi Muyo!” in the first place. And I was determined to undertake the project.”

      On speaking with Miura:

“President Miura, now that Ai Tenchi is over, could you introduce me to Kajishima? I have yet to meet him ever since I started work on the TV show back in 1995.”

When asked if he saw Kajishima as a mysterious man, he responded with:

“I don’t know, since we haven’t met before. Though I do think he is very talented.”

Negishi also mentions that his favorite episode of the OVA is “Hello Baby!” (OVA2 Ep. 1)

I also hope that Ai performed well enough to see another, perhaps even a continuation for it with full time episodes. I’ve seen mostly positive reviews with the negative ones pretty much being about the 4 minute show length. The idea that you said returning to story’s with the original girls sounds great, as I’m sure the reaction from the fans was well received when they appeared threw out Ai, some characters from Ai would make for some welcome appearances too if not to take to much spotlight from the originals. Still I would like to have teenage Momo brought back as a full timer especially with how ep 60 left it open with that she could still exist in Tenchi’s reality , heck I would enjoy if they added her to the Tenchi household as another girl living there and after Tenchi’s attention too Tenchismile I could see Tenchi teaching her fighting skills with the sword, much to the dismay of the others kiyonesmile1 But yes fingers crossed that Ai has performed well, if the novel’s get officially released and show dubbed for release in this country I will certainly support it and buy them. Maybe we’ll see some new merchandise lines out too like character figures.

      Thanks for reading :)

If Tenchi is continued from the AI verse, a story could be made from beni and momo’s connection to Jurai. There is potential in what they could come up with.

I am hoping for something with both Ryoko and Ayeka story, the two top Tenchi girls in the spotlight would be awesome if AI did well.

Sounds like that would make an enjoyable plot in both parts you mentioned. I’d love to see a new in depth story featured around Ryoko and Ayeka. Though I would certainly be pleased if they brought back teenage Momo too from the sword, though I think it would be better for her to take a back seat from being the main character as in Ai and switch it with the main Tenchi girls, well Ryoko and Ayeka at least :) I’m sure people would also like to see more of Ryo Ohki!

I basically talk about the show, the whole series and towards the end of the vid my thoughts on the ending and how its been left open for a possible continuation (though I give fair warning of spoilers when I get to that part kiyonesmile1 )

I’ve also shouted out to the wonderful people of TenchiFourm and put a link to your YouTube channel (TenchiForumTV) and a link to the Ai Tenchi playlist that’s on it. Tenchismile

Thank you for the great video, helping to draw more attention to the show. The shoutouts are also always appreciated <3.

I’ve added your video to the first post (with a spoiler disclaimer, naturally) and tweaked a few things to reflect the post-Ai Tenchi world we are in now. Might do a few more bits of cleanup later.

Apologies for the delay. Thank you Nil Admirari for the kind words and featuring the video on page one of this boards :) The video has had an overall positive reaction, a few have watched then video then left in the comment’s that there now going to go watch the show which is brilliant as that’s just what I hoped would happen Tenchismile

So, I was skimming around DeviantArt looking for fan art of our loveable lug Goriki-kun. Unfortunately, while fan art of Momo has started to appear on the site, I haven’t seen anyone else appear yet. sadface1

That being said, I did find some fan art of “Goriki”.

      http://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/wwsd-narutaki_ling.jpg" />

In Kia Asamiya’s 1994 manga and its 1998 anime adaptation, Steam Detectives had a robot named Goriki that shares particular features with Ai Tenchi‘s Goriki-kun. Is there some connection beyond general design and name?

As Nil pointed out, the kanji for Steam Detectives‘ Goriki are “強力”, which can be read as “powerful”. I forget if Ai Tenchi‘s Goriki-kun uses the same kanji for his name or not. Also, the name might be common for strong-man characters. For example, Pokemon has the Goriki/Machoke likewise fits the strong-man design rather well.

      What are your thoughts? Tenchismile

I do have a question about this series – does it take place in it’s own continuity, or does it take place in either the OVA or Universe continuities?

I apologize if this has been asked elsewhere, I’ve done some poking around the forum and this thread in particular and haven’t seen the answer.

It takes place in its own continuity.

We actually talk about this on a couple of the Ai Tenchicast episodes if you’re into Podcasts!

Overall I thought the article was pretty meh. Kind of seems like they were trying to bank on the fact that the majority of people would hate on it, which didn’t happen (Let’s face it, it’s Kotaku).

However, this is one of the few times that a comments section on Kotaku hasn’t totally disappointed me.

      for example:

      Quote:

Oh man, I have intense nostalgia for Tenchi Muyo OVAs 1&2 and Tenchi Universe. They’re soome of the first anime shows beyond DBZ that I saw when they started airing on Toonami a thousand years ago (I was really confused at first when they switched from the OVAs to Universe without really explaining the change, especially considering the original OVAs kind of ended on a cliffhanger). Never did get around to watching that third OVA but I heard less than great things.

      Quote:

its been so long since i watched Tenchi Muyo!… I kinda miss it now. Will most definitely check this series out, although the 3.5 min episodes do seem kinda weird. In other news, Tenchi Universe was my first “favorite” anime series and it stuck with me over the decades. I’ve used this screenname, with “masaki” taken from the Tenchi series for almost 15 years now. ahh, nostalgia…

      Quote:

Ohhh snap I really liked watching Tenchi in Tokyo and Tenchi Universe show from Toonami, I’m sure they were heavily modified for America but I loved watching every episode. Now if someone wants to bring back Outlaw Star…

      Quote:

Does it go completely batshit like the Ryo-ohki series did near the end? That got weird almost instantly.

      Quote:

I didn’t like that it was short episodes… other than that it was great.

And when someone complained about the art style changed to a modern style.

      Quote:

Have you seen the next Digimon?

      Or any other anime lately?

Sorry, dude. Welcome to the future

I also liked how this person viewed the series ending as a whole.

      Quote:

To me, the series had a pretty solid conclusion already.

      http://i.kinja-img.com/gawker-media/image/upload/s–iVsjv6ym–/c_fit,fl_progressive,q_80,w_320/umupdxykzi5hyjdp5gmz.jpg" />

I didn’t need more after that.

Oh, and let’s not forget this.

      Quote:

fuck yes! did you know that Ryoko was originally going to be Tenchi’s only love interest?

      [BBvideo]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aD9cMvxkOHY[/BBvideo]

Man, all that Ai Tenchi love. Isn’t it great when people pay attention?

It wasn’t perfect, but overall you did a decent job, Kotaku comments section. http://replygif.net/i/159.gif" />

I thought the review brought up some very fair points, some similar to how I feel but on the whole he was a lot less forgiving than I was about the flaws. Which reminds me, I still need to work on my write-up for the series as a whole. It’s been 3 months! Gah, I am so behind on things.

Kotaku comments section doin the heart good for once though.

This is what I thought too about how the article was as well, it looked at it objectively then felt a little aggressive on the cons.

I have to say that this was pretty much the first time that a Kotaku comment section actually impressed me with how great it was. So kudos to the individuals who were in there!

I do think, while the review was fair, there is one line in particular that sums up a thought I have and a point I drive home every . single . time someone “reviews” (and I use that term very lightly) Ai Tenchi.

      Richard Eisenbeis wrote:

As an introduction to the franchise—or as a modern harem comedy—it is largely a failure. As a 20th anniversary love letter to all things Tenchi Muyo, however, Ai Tenchi Muyo is a decent nostalgic outing. And let’s face it, that’s probably exactly what it was trying to be.

This line right here emphasizes what everyone is looking at but misses, there’s no “probably” about it because that was the very first fucking graphic we saw for Ai Tenchi Muyo, lol.

In a lot of ways, as much as it was a series to make new fans (through the modern look and new girls) come in, it relied on the hardcore fans through the various jokes and homages it paid.

There’s no doubt that people have expectations with the Tenchi Muyo! name, we all have that in some degree or fashion, but sometimes you have to splash some cold water in your face and realize, it’s not 1999 anymore people, Tenchi is no longer the juggernaut it once was.

I hate big-leaguing anyone, but this show wasn’t made for anyone who casually watched Tenchi Muyo! It was made for people who had never seen it, and the people who know and understand that 20 years of carnivals happened before this series

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, Ai Tenchi Muyo! had problems, Ai Tenchi Muyo is not perfect, and I can’t blame anyone for wanting Tenchi to not suck ass like it has for a long, long, time, but when I see people say “These characters don’t look like muh characters” I point to one comment in particular that Crazed linked that said

      Quote:

Have you seen the next Digimon?

      Or any other anime lately?

Sorry, dude. Welcome to the future

This show didn’t happen the way it did by accident, everyone on here knows that, so the entire point of all that is, while anyone can come in and review the show, throwing around “It failed this, it failed that”, is a bit disingenuous when the show took place between commercial breaks for other anime, and made no bones about saying it was “a nostalgic outing” in the form of a 20th anniversary celebration.

Btw, is responsible for the illustration : Yasuyuki TSURUGI (剣 康之)

Kajishima is credited as “Original work”, he really do have his hand on everything no matter what ^^.

And weirdly enough, Negishi is nowhere to be found here (from what I’ve been able to see). The author is “水樹尋” which I’ll read Mizuki Hiro. He is the author of Paradize War.

Negishi Hiroshi’s name is not on the staff page of both books.

      Quote:

This is possibly Kajishima’s attempt to add credit to his name through, piggybacking off of Negishi’s work. Ai Tenchi Muyo was written and directed by Hiroshi Negishi, but the books on Ai are a different matter. I think I remember reading somewhere they had ousted Negishi when putting the book together.

      Quote:

I highly doubt it. Kajishima gets credit for the original in every derivative work.

      Quote:

I think so too. Original character design is what he had always been refered to.

But still, Negishi is not the author of the books. What’s up with that? Ai Tenchi was so popular, AIC wanted to cash in more ? Or was it not popular at all and the books are meant to help the failure ?

Ai did fairly well, being a tourist advertisement show for the city of Takahashi. Negishi had said in one of his twitter posts a long time ago, that he was not included in the book, although the original twitter post would help to reference if anyone can find it. Though I find it ridiculous for Kajishima to get credit for Negishi’s work, you have your doujins Kajishima, Negishi has Ai.

The November issue of Kodansha’s Monthly Shōnen Sirius magazine announced on Saturday that Haruna Nakazato’s manga adaptation of the Ai: Tenchi Muyo! anime will end in the next issue, which Kodansha will publish on October 26.

Nakazato launched the manga in Monthly Shōnen Sirius last November, and Kodansha has not yet published any compiled book volumes of the series.

I don’t know where to put it, but :

To read (kinda) the first few pages of the manga.

Just clic on the left and roll out.

Another day, another artstyle, and we have some extra scene with the old cast.

Apparently, it’s Nakazato Haruna to the screenplay, and Suzuhito YASUDA (chara designer) to the drawing.

Ai Tenchi Muyo is coming back in dub! Petrea Burchard is rightfully back as Ryoko, Sherry lynn as Sasami and Matt Miller as Tenchi. The dub is currently in the works, the Tenchicast all about it

We all get to go through the whole ride all over again, really looking forward to ep 7 when we see Tenchi, Ryoko, Sasami and Ayeka doing their old thing again.

Yep. Dagon and I had heard inklings of these developments, so we were hopeful but kept quiet…then next thing we know, Mona Marshall and Sherry Lynn are bringing it up on their Twitter profiles (thanks to our own Nobs for a tip-off about the former), so we had a bit of a “Now is the time to grasp the future!” moment and said wth, let’s garner some excitement, provide some clarification (some people reading Sherry Lynn’s tweet speculated everything from OVA to Pretty Sammy), and have a reunion cast to boot.

Since this is so breaking, as of this post there’s still no official announcement (tbh, I thought for sure they’d do it on Valentine’s Day…you know, Ai Tenchi Muyo!, Tenchi Muyo LOVE? but whatever lol), but you can bet we’ll keep everyone posted on social media when there is one.
