Was pretty happy with how this turned out, although I might go back and touch up her hair a bit more. Trying to get the spikes to look natural is not easy. I’ve got a process video for it up on youtube too, if anyone fancies a look.

Please ask me stuff about digital drawing too, if you want. I’ve been doing this for long enough now that I might actually know the answers.

      Oh my GAWD!

As to your offer, I might continue this via pm sometime, but in general would you care to give a recommendation on what tools you use for drawing on a computer? (Tablets, programs, the like.) I’m a beginner, but I don’t want to go bare bones either, I’d like to invest in some quality equipment as needed.

Thank you for sharing your work, it’s really good and so unlike any other Tenchi fanart I’ve ever seen.

Your style make Ryoko look American. Very well done. has a nice 80’s & 90’s style look to it. Like, hot sexy business woman on vacation kinda look.

      Amazing artwork! iloveit1

I’m especially impressed with the shading and coloring, as those are two things I struggle with.

I would very much like to hear this as well.

WOW! I totally agree with everyone as that was totally cool.I liked the fact that not only did you give her a more

American look but also a sexy cheesecake pose.To be honest at first I didn’t realize it was Ryoko.

Hah, thanks guys :D It’s probably showing what influences me in the American cheesecake vibe. I can’t promise I’ll be going through all the characters any time soon, but I do at least intend to do Mihoshi in the not so distant future.

I typed out a quick overview of tablets & software, but unfortunately it ended up being kind of a wall of text and, as I went away and came back to the computer while I was doing it, the forum actually logged me out before I could post…

I’ll try again tomorrow, but the tl;dr version was that I’d recommend spending around $200 on a mid-sized Wacom Intuos3 tablet (older model, but you can still find them new) and downloading an open-source painting program called ‘Fire Alpaca’.

Ah, GIMP. I’ve used it for image editing, but I’ve actually never tried painting with it, I’m afraid. Although I used to mainly use Photoshop (and dabbled in Paint Tool Sai for a while), I’ve switched to mainly using Manga Studio now. Like Sai, the drawing tools in MS feel closer to working with traditional media than Photoshop, but unlike SAI, there’s more scope for customising brushes and there’s a great selection of specialised rulers aimed at helping you make comic panels. The only drawback is that it lacks some of Photoshop’s more advanced colour adjustments and layer blending modes.

Different software will more readily suit different styles of art though. If you like things to look very painterly, Photoshop or GIMP are probably the way to go, as there’s a huge array of user-created textured brushes out there that you can download for free. Nevertheless, many anime fan-artists seem to favour Sai instead, as it’s more conducive to creating a smooth, cel-shaded look, with its stroke stabilizer and blending tools.

Fire Alpaca is essentially the free equivalent of Sai (much as GIMP is to Photoshop), so it’s a good thing to download and play about with if you’re not sure what program would suit you. I tried a lot of different programs before I found something I liked, so I’d recommend sampling as many as possible to get something you’re comfortable with.
