This news is really for old school pokemon fans who grew up playing Red and Blue, but any pokemon fan should find it interesting.

I say it every time a new Pokemon comes out “I’m to old for this now” and “these new generations are terrible compared to the old ones”, yet Game Freak and Pokemon Co. find a way to use my nostalgia as the hook, line, and sinker to bring me back time and time again. In every new Pokemon generation there are always new starters, and X and Y are no exception. Only this time around you can choose not one but two starters! What does this have to do with nostalgia you ask? Well the second starter that you choose is either Bulbasaur, Charmander, or Squirtle! That’s not all though. After you evolve them into Venusaur, Charizard, or Blastoise you can evolve them into Mega Venusaur, Mega Charizard, or Mega Blastoise by using the new method of Mega Evolution!

watch this to see the new forms

There will also be a new anime special starring trainers Red and Green. Let’s face it more old school fans like Red more than Ash and Gary anyway. The anime is based on the video games Red and Green (Blue in USA) rather than the manga. It will show how Red and Green got their start making it an origins story, not just for Red and Green but really for the whole franchise as well.

    Here’s the anime’s trailer

I really like that with the first 3D game they are giving you the gen 1 starters, as it keeps them contemporary and also really drives home the “Pokemon World” over “Pokemon Regions” feel. The only gen I skipped was 4, and had nothing to do with the pokemon, I was just literally so busy I pretty much couldn’t game, or if I did, I had to only play the faves. Each gen has their good and bad pokemon, I think Gen 1 and 2 seem different because after those, Pokemon artist Ken Sugimori’s art style shifted, which always creates sectionalism among any fandom.

I would say most old school fans NOW prefer red and green to gary and ash, I would say that when the main anime threw out any semblance of following any plot that wasn’t dedicated merely to region or ash growing at all that people just stopped caring (The hostile takeover switch from 4kids to Nintendo of America for the dub also neutered the anime for A LOT if not most western fans)

I’ve been out of the Pokemon anime adaptation loop for a long time. So, 4kids hasn’t been doing the dub for a while, and it’s even more watered down?! More so than 4kids, the company that, in Yu-Gi-Oh, simply removed the weapons from the hands of armed henchmen??? (no, didn’t replace with water guns, didn’t edit out the shots of them holding their guns, just literally left grown-@$$ men in suits with their arms oddly oustretched) And you’re telling me after they lost a hold of it, Pokemon got “worse” ?!!! 😯

Anyways, glad to see someone’s finally capitalizing on perhaps the perfect balance of nostalgia feeding and injecting some much-needed novelty in terms of the Pokemon anime adaptation scene (seriously, Ash, how long you gonna out there “catching them all?” til you’re sporting a beard?)

I’m with you there Who. I quit watching the anime after the Johto saga; it was the same thing over and over again and I just lost interest. I definitely want to see the anime adaptation with Red in it. You fight him in several different games yet all he ever says is “…”, so it will be nice for him to finally speak even if it’s not in a game. I’m also surprised that it took them this long to do an anime with Red in it. Ash has been around since what 97′ and he himself was based on Red.

Not since gen 1 have I had a problem choosing which fossil pokemon I wanted (and a legit T-Rex pokemon) this coupled with the fact you get the gen 1 starters as well is making me wish I had a 3DS so bad…..

I can’t wait for the show, I think they would have do do 40 min eps. other wise how are they gonna tell the whole game?

They’re only telling the story through Brock’s gym. Theres no way they could squeeze the whole game into only 4 episodes.

but they showed lance, he didn’t show up before brocks gym……… :Cheeks:

It looks to me like each episode will showcase key moments that are in the games. Such as Red’s first gym battle, getting the Pokedex, fighting Lance, and eventually fighting Green for the title of champion at the Indigo Plateau. So I don’t think we’ll get to see everything, just certain events.

They… wanted an excuse to give him a cameo? I’m just relaying what I’ve heard regarding what Origins will cover. I could be wrong, an honestly I’d LOVE to be wrong this time. I’m just trying not to let my (already high) expectations for this get out of hand, which would just be setting myself up for potential disappointment.

I don’t want you to think I’m just trying to burst your bubble or anything.

At any rate, I’m liking this “short and sweet” approach thus far. No offense, but after Ash’s adventures going on for (arguably)* too long, the idea of a short OVA that will leave folks wanting more sounds far more appealing to me than the neverendinganime approach (cough one piece).

*but hey, it has been a great internet joke source for many, many years.

It would seem that mega evolutions of certain Pokemon are now version exclusive. The two Pokemon to have version exclusive mega evolutions so far are Mewtwo and Charizard. Since Charizard has version exclusive mega evolutions it’s probably safe to say that the other starters will as well. Here are the version exclusive mega evolutions (so far). Also it looks like Red’s Charizard will be able to mega evolve into at least Mega Charizard X in the new origins anime.
