One of my two favorite animes of all time (the other being Tenchi Muyo! of course!) is a Japanese gem from the mid 70’s called “Space Battleship Yamato,” or as it’s better known in the english speaking world “Star Blazers.” My mother watched it when she was in college and she passed it on to me, and now I love it! This show was the spark that ignited the world wide anime craze that we all enjoy today. It followed the crew of a resurected Japanese WWII battleship as they made a desperate run across the galaxy to save Earth, which was devastated by radioactive meteorites. The characters were all very well done, and the plots, some of which are pretty ridiculous nowadays, always brought the most exciting drama. It used vivid colors, beautiful artwork, and nearly TRIPPLE the ammount of cels per episode than other shows of its time, all of which created a revolutionary visual experience. It was also one of the very first animes to feature an overarching plot rather than encapsulated episodic adventures. As proof of how big this show was in Japan, when the first movie was released in 1977 it CRUSHED Star Wars at the box office, and broke scores of box office records. I have collected nearly all of the seasons and movies (english and japanese) and I feel that it is consistantly of the highest quality.

So are there any other “Star Blazers” fans here? If anyone wants to know more about this amazing show I suggest heading on over to http://www.starblazers.com/home.php” class=”bbcode_url”>http://www.starblazers.com/home.php. It is a fantastic site that is very well maintained and has all the info you could ever want about this show. The first season of the english version “Star Blazers” is available on Netflix watch instant, so give it a try sometime if you have Netflix.

Wouldn’t say I’m a fan but I’ve seen a little of it. I felt it was similar to Captain Harlock and Galaxy Express 999, with some of the other

      shows in that same vein.

Your feelings are quite perceptive, as both of the shows you mentioned were created by the same artist who created Star Blazers/Space Battleship Yamato: the great Leiji Matsumoto. I havent had the chance to watch any of his other works, but I plan on it someday. Anyway, its encouraging to see that I’m not the only one who has heard of my other favorite anime.

I had no idea that Matsumoto was still making anime! This is really good too, very oldschool which is how I like my anime. Any word on when the next episode is coming out?

Thanks for the tips about the other shows, perhaps now I really will sit down and watch some of them. Also, I am very excited for Yamato2199! I have been awaiting it for a long time now.

Excellent news! Thanks again for the info. I’ve been on this forum for less than 24 hours and I’ve already learned more things than I would have imagined about something I thought I knew pretty well. This is going to be fun :D

Yet another Matsumoto anime I didnt know existed, let alone seen 😳 ? Wow I had no idea this thread would be so educational for me.

I watched the live action Yamato movie a few months ago. It was pretty cool, especially the relatively high effects quality, however they ruined my favorite anime villain/anti-hero of all time: Leader Desslok of Gamilon!

The North American home video distributor Discotek announced on Monday through its Facebook page that it will be releasing the original Captain Harlock TV series on DVD. According to the post, the series will be sold as a subtitled, complete box set containing all 42 episodes.

It’ll fit in right next to this and these. http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b84/harleybmw/wub.gif" />

      Is that the original Harlock?

I think the Maetel/Emeraldas Saga would go like this in chronolgical order:

      1.Millennial Queen

      2.Maetel Legend

      3.Queen Emeraldas

      4.Maetel Symphony

      5.Galaxy Express 999

      6.Adieu!Galaxy Express 999

I’m not sure where Queen Emeraldas fits in so I put it between Maetel Legend and Maetel Symphony.

If anyone can correct me on this let me know, also correct me if I’m wrong on the first title as I am sure of the others.

The first one is about Yayoi, the mother of Maetel and Emeraldas.

Hey Nobuyuki, tell me you’ve been following “OZMA”! I can not thank you enough for introducing me to this show! I am absolutely loving it! I can’t wait for the finale, and there had better be a renewal for a second series or I might go insane! Once again, thank you so much for showing me this series.

P.S. Bainas is officially the greatest character ever!

Did he get the title Ozma from the character from the Oz books,I wonder?

It’s interesting to consider but Ozma in the Oz books could be said to have been a trans-transsexual.

If you have ever read The Wonderful Land of Oz you’ll know what I mean. It’s a bit complicated.

I know off topic there, but when I see the title Ozma I automatically think of the character Princess Ozma.

Thats a curious notion, but I doubt it was a major consideration. From what I’ve read, the show was originally supposed to be called “OZUMA,” but they shortened the title for some reason.

And because one picture is not enough proof that Bainas is the queen of the badasses:

It’s a very important series, but what annoys me is that Matsumoto used almost the exact same charater designs on his later work. For example, Starsha looks like Yayoi and Maetel from Galaxy Express 999 and Queen Millenia respectively. Of course they’re good series as well, but I constantly wondered if I was watching Star Blazers again.

Apparently, the creator designs boats now.

You mean THEY look like Starsha right? :AAANND: But in all seriousness, yes Matsumoto does recycle many of his character designs throughout his many shows, but rarely can it be said that the characters themselves are recycled. They may look very similar, but they are usually unique characters with their own personalities.

      SilverWhisper wrote:

That boat is pretty rad though, you have to admit!

      chucklocker wrote:

Yeah, I also botched the charaters in relation to each series. I meant Maetel and Yayoi, not Yayoi and Maetel, from Galaxy Express 999 and Queen Millenia respectively… I suppose it’s because I’m more familiar with Queen Millenia than the former.

Though it would make sense that Yayoi and Maetel look alike as they happen to be mother and daughter.

But yeah,a lot of mangaka’s recycle character design,I think it’s easier that way.

Oh and I noticed that he didn’t get his big break until he was in his 30s while compare the other mangakas that had

      their’s in their 20s.

      ^She was? :Uhwaht:
Well supposedly Yayoi from Millennial Queen is the same as the mother of Maetel and Emeraldas in Maetel Legend.

For all who are interested, this is what Nobuyuki and I are referring to:

      http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2012-07-28/funi-adds-seikishi-yamato/r-one-piece/strong-world-fairy-tail-film-akira” class=”bbcode_url”>http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2012-07-28/funi-adds-seikishi-yamato/r-one-piece/strong-world-fairy-tail-film-akira

Yamato Resurrection was a brand new animated Yamato adventure that took place two decades after the events of the final movie. It was HUGE in Japan (it helped lead to the success of the EVEN HUGER 2010 live action film), and now Funimation have secured the rights to dub and release it in the west. The first new Yamato material released in the west since the early 80’s!!!!!!! This is big, BIG, news for all Yamato and Matsumoto fans, as it might very well signify the beginning of a “Resurrection” (pun totally intended) of classic Matsumoto anime in the west!

      I saw that too.

Though why it take so long is the real question.Captain Harlock,Galaxy Express 999 and other of

Matsumoto works have been avaible for awhile outside of Japan.

ML, the launch scene is always one of the greatest highlights of each season and movie of Yamato. It is the equivalent of the “Enterprise leaving space-dock” sequences from the Star Trek movies: the combination of dynamic imagery and exciting music always makes it a magnificent sight!

      Here are some prime examples!:

I came across a Star Blazers website on Saturday that was rather interesting.I’ll try to find it again

some time this week and post the url. What I found interesting is that they had archive interviews with two

Superfans. One of them was Brian Cirulnik(sp?)who is one of the people behind Anime.Com.

It seems that Star Blazers was what got his interest in not just anime but animation started.

Ah…chucklocker do you know the distance between Queens and Long Island?

There’s a point in the interview where Cirulnik talks about how his parents drove him and his sister to a

He is not alone. This show pretty much singlehandedly gave birth to the worldwide anime phenomenon, fandom and all. The amount of “Firsts” this show had is off the charts, and it is directly responsible for pretty much every anime show ever since. It’s importance cannot be overstated.

Good news guys! Manga Entertainment, the company that has the rights to Yamato/Star Blazers here in the west, has uploaded nearly all of the animated adventures of Space Battleship Yamato to You Tube! This is a great resource for watching this classic and monumental show for free and in good quality, and I HIGHLY recommend everybody to use it! That being said, Yamato can be a daunting and confusing series to jump into, so I’m here to provide a quick guide on what is what in the Yamato/Starblazers cannon, as well as the best way to start watching!

The order: SEASON 1 Released in 1974, this is the very first iteration of the series and introduces the main characters and themes of the series. It’s a bit slow in the beginning, a bit jumbled in the middle, but ABSOLUTELY EPIC in the final segment. If you have the time and energy to watch this 26 ep. season it is the best way to get into the series, but if not then you need to watch….

THE FIRST MOVIE. Made in 1977, this film is what exploded Yamato to international glory. It condenses the first season down to a feature length film, cutting out the more jumbled stories in the middle in favor the epic main story arc. As to be expected of condensing a whole season, however, it doesn’t flow as nicely, but overall it is a great film and definitely the place to start if you want a quick and exciting jump into the series.

THE SECOND MOVIE Made in 1978, this movie is bar none the highest quality installation in the entire franchise. The visuals, music, and plot are stunning, and the dramatic tension is at the pinnacle of the series’ career. This movie did have an EXTREMELY downer ending, however, so in order to have the series continue on, the story was ret-conned in…

SEASON 2 also made in 1978, this season is my personal favorite installation in the entire franchise, because it takes the story of the second movie and spreads it out into a season length story, with a happier ending. Unlike the first season, this one stays focused on the main plot from the very beginning and the pace is never slow. Easily the best arc of the entire franchise.

THE THIRD MOVIE Made in 1979, this made for TV movie picks up after season 2. The shortest of the movies, the story focuses heavily on characters and locations first seen in the first season. A fast paced and exciting story, this movie is a great standalone story and features many great dramatic scenes. This movie also sets up a confrontation which is continued in….

THE FOURTH MOVIE Made in 1980, this movie is the darkest in the series’ history. Drama, emotion, and bitter conflict define the story, and many sacrifices are made. After the second season, this is my favorite installation because of the high production values, excellent story, and AWESOME action.

SEASON 3 Made in 1980, this season starts after the end of the fourth movie. A decent plot and subplots keep this season interesting, but overall I feel it falls way short of the quality, drama, and excitement that the previous installations delivered.

THE FIFTH MOVIE (not on YT… :( ) After disappointing ratings for the third season, the shows’ creators decided to send Yamato off in style with one last big adventure. Made in 1983, the final movie, creatively named “Final Yamato,” was to be the last in the franchise. A big plot and lots of drama/emotion carry this film well, but it just doesn’t deliver the same punch as some of the previous stories. Also, at just under 3 hours, this film STILL holds the record of longest animated movie ever made, which makes it a real butt-burner.

So there you have it, links to as much Yamato/Star Blazers as you could possibly want and a guide for watching them. If anyone would like more info or input about any of the seasons/movies, or wants some advice about which to watch, just PM me or post in this thread. Now get watching! :D

P.S. The three TV seasons are English dubbed and the five movies are English subbed.

Not to nitpick but technically Voyager Entertainment is the western licensor and is the company that released it all on DVD. IIRC Manga just sublicensed the streaming and broadcast rights from them.

Anyways, thanks for sharing this, its great that its all getting streamed. I was watching it on Syfy before they dropped their anime block. Now I can finally see the end, and catch up on the handful of episodes I missed :D

Great find Wisper! I’m really enjoying this series! They are doing an excellent job of modernizing the story while staying true to the original feel of the show. I’m loving the new characters and their interactions, and the addition of modern scientific knowledge and more realistic situations is great! No more having to wonder how the ship keeps getting repaired so fast, or why Yuki/Nova is the ONLY woman on the ship lol. I’m especially curious to see where these next episodes will go because at this point in the original the episodes get rather preposterous and random, i.e. a planet of bee people called, wait for it, planet Beeland (for real!) or discovering that Sanada’s/Sandor’s arms and legs are actually prosthetics with BOMBS in them (seriously!). I hope that they continue to clean up the story and shift the focus from the silly plots more toward the character interactions. All in all, this is a FANTASTIC treatment of the original series and I earnestly hope that they continue on to season two, cause that would be mindblowingly good!

Happy birthday Yamato! On this day in 1974 “Space Battleship Yamato” first aired on Japanese TV, launching not only a crew of courageous Star Blazers into the unknown, but all of anime fandom as well!

So raise a cup of Sake, shout “We will return!”, and enjoy this RARE extended version of the original opening theme.

I also have to give props to you Chuck, for singlehandedly revitalizing my interest in the franchise. I can’t remember if I mentioned this before, but I was watching Star Blazers during its brief run on Syfy before they dropped their anime block, and while I kept meaning to get back to it… I never actively tried to seek out the rest and finish it. However after seeing some of the trailers for the new series posted here, and reading your extensive post about what order to watch the series in at the top of this page I finally decided to give it another go from the beginning. Give yourself a pat on the back, you’ve recruited a new fan into the Star Force ranks :D

They have a review of Yamato 2199 over at Anime.com now.

@WisperG. You’re the man Wisper! It makes me SUPER happy to see you so excited to jump into this great series! Be sure to let us know all about what you think of it!

@mitsuki lover. Nice catch there ML. The reviewer is Tim Eldred (AKA the guy who runs the ABSOLUTELY AMAZING starblazers.com) who is pretty much the guru of Star Blazers fandom. He always gives a very cogent and high minded approach to the franchise, and his review here is some of his finer work. I agree wholeheartedly with his review, especially how he describes the benefit the “middle path” that the creators took in remaking the original (Paramount Studios take note: If you want to reboot a classic cultural touchstone sci-fi series for the modern age DON’T hand the reigns over to someone who didn’t grow up as a diehard fan of the original! *cough JJ Abrams cough*)

Anyway, It’s a great time to be a Yamato fan and I am looking forward with great anticipation to the rest of this awesome series! Tim Eldred said it best: “History says this probably still isn’t the last time Yamato will go to Iscandar, but no matter how many more times it happens, it will always have an appreciative audience. That’s what it is to be a legend.”

      Agree.

      The classics never die out.

OMG lol I remember I came across this vid years ago! Haha, that is actually Sasha, Starsha’s daughter (movie III and IV). I still crack up every time I see this 😆 At least Desslok gave the poor girl a smile towards the end! Anyway, while we’re on the topic of funny Yamato vids…..

Hopefully FUNi will be able to include both versions. The theatrical/directors cuts each have completely different endings don’t they?

I assume you mean that they first started production at the same time, because the live action movie came out in January of 2010, while the new series only just started to be released in the summer of 2012. Yeah, it is interesting that the creators of 2199 had to work with the success and innovations of the live action movie hanging over them, and in many ways I can see where they may have drawn inspiration from it.

Yes as a matter of fact they did. As WisperG here can tell you firsthand, Syfy aired episodes of Star Blazers late at night in its killed-too-soon anime block.

I must have missed it or it must have been after they moved from Mondays, which I always thought was the nail in the coffin that did it in.

Great catch MitsukiLover! This is just further proof of my argument that StarBlazers/Yamato is probably the largest “underground” anime fandom in the west. It was a common experience among an entire generation, and even though most of that generation never made it any further into anime than this show, it is still the foundation for almost EVERYTHING anime fandom related in the west. Don’t take my word for it either, THIS ARTICLE excellently details how the first organized anime clubs, and later anime conventions, were StarBlazers/Yamato based!
1983,that was two years before Robotech and anime fandom started to really explode. To think that they

were able to get enough fans for Starblazers to organize any sized convention in America back in 1983 is

      just astounding.

I still crack up every time I think of that episode! My mother and I always joke that he went for the optional upgrades when he picked out his limbs! 😆 Now you see why I’m so hard on the middle episodes of the first season and hope that Yamato 2199 just ignores some of them! They’re just so ridiculous by today’s standards! Oh, and you haven’t seen the last of Sandor’s inexplicably insane crafty-ness :D

EDIT: Although I will say this for the Beeland episode, it is one of the ONLY times we get to see Nova kick some ass on her own in the English dub. One of my least favorite things about the English dub was that it really “Feminized” her character. As you’ll see when you get to the Japanese movies, she’s really a competent and skilled officer in her own right who kicks untold amounts of ass and even puts Wildstar in his place more than a few times! The English dub makes her into a clingy “captain’s woman” stereotype, and her character is worse off for it.

Ah!Yes,that was in the pre-Xena days of American tv. bth_kiyonespritegif.

@MitsukiLover: Iscandar is pretty much what you see here. Notice how suspiciously similar to Japan that archipelago looks though lol!

While we’re talking about Iscandar, I found out something really heartwarmingly geeky the other day. You’re all familiar with the terrible environmental damage from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant after the earthquake in Japan last year. I know right!!!! I’m thrilled that you enjoyed the first season so much! The Quest for Iscandar story is by far the most iconic and classic of the franchise, but I think that once you watch The Comet Empire story (Farewell to Yamato/season 2) that you will agree with me that it is by far the most epic and dramatic of almost any franchise! I don’t know if you intend to watch only the movie, which is fine, but I highly recomend watching season 2 as well because 1. I think its better, 2. It is what the subsequent stories follow and 3. the slight story changes do wonders for the characters. Anyway, Please Please Please keep letting us know how you enjoy the show, its great to have other people to share my favorite anime with!

Awesome! Yeah, I agree that you don’t need to go right into the first movie as it’s pretty much the exact same story (and it’s a bit jumbled and compressed at that.) There is one scene, however, in the first movie that is really powerful that you don’t get in the show (the English dub at least). After the battle on Gamilon, Wildstar/Kodai looks out on the utter ruin that he’s brought down on this civilization and he throws down his gun, weeps, and curses war and fighting! It’s an incredibly moving scene, and something we don’t really see in the TV series. In the show, the Yamato is always obliterating its enemies (with happy music playing in the background!) and not stopping to consider the morality of what’s basically genocide! In the movies, however, they tend to struggle with the moral and ethical issues of total war, and are much more conscious of the enemy as a living being too. Anyway, that’s my take on it.

For someone who hasn’t seen any of Yamato would you recommend getting the movie boxset,if one could find it at a reasonable price?
      chucklocker

The box set that is sold by Voyager Entertainment is usually pretty expensive. I picked mine up from starblazers.com when they were having a BIG sale and it still came to about $80! The set itself is very nice, the disks have some cool special features and it comes with a nifty booklet that has translated interviews with Matsumoto and various other production crew members. I suggest that you watch the movies on Manga Entertainment’s You Tube channel first, so you know if you like them before dropping the cash on the dvd set. The first two movies are ADEQUET substitutes for the first two seasons and movies 3 and 4 are fantastic movies. So for a newcomer to Yamato I would say to watch them on Manga’s You Tube channel (links to them are in my post detailing the optimum watching order) and then decide if you want the set.

Well Chuck, I finally watched Farewell to Space Battleship Yamato… and was absolutely blown away winfaceemoticon

It exceeded my expectations in almost every way, the quality of the animation, the music, the suspense, the emotional ending. I admit, I teared up a bit at the end, and was shocked by some of the death scenes (especially the Doctor and IQ9), and unsurprisingly Sandor went out like a boss (I wouldn’t have had it any other way). I’m also glad they portrayed Desslock/Dessler as a somewhat respectable and honorable person instead of a generic “I’m evil and I’m going to kill you all for no reason” bad guy with no adequate motivation.
There are only two or three things I wish they had done but didn’t, the first is showing the main characters families. Not one mention of them was made in the movie, no brief shots of weeping parents or siblings (or cheering, depending on the scene), nothing like that despite them being one of the Yamato crews main motivations in the TV series. A mention or shot of Kodai/Widlstar’s brother, Starsha or Iscandar would’ve been nice, or at least someone pointing out how much of a resemblance Teresa has to Starsha. I also wanted to see the villains faces when they realized “Holy crap, they’re gonna ram us!”, although I suppose that would’ve intruded on the emotional ending sequence. But those are small gripes when compared to how fantastic this movie was.

I think I can safely add this to the list of my FAVORITE MOVIES OF ALL TIME (anime or otherwise) without a second thought. I can’t say that about most movies I watch, but this one is special.

FYI, that “space submarine” commander is Galman Wolf, a character who appeared in season three of the original series (he was also the only cool thing in that season lol!), and seeing him here is just mindblowingly awesome! I can’t wait to see those space subs in action! I’m also really pleased with the level of character building they’re doing with the Gamilons, and I think Desslok had more screen time in this two minute trailer than he did in the first 10 episodes of the series so far, which is exciting! I am very pleased with the way this series is turning out, and I can’t wait to see more! Thanks for the share Nobuyuki, although you only beat me to it by a few hours lol!

Merciful Zeus, I do believe you’re right Wisper! What can this mean!? Is the Comet Empire going to get in on the action? Will there be a threeway war between Earth, Gamilon, and the Comet Empire? The possibilities are amazing! I sorta hope that they only make teasing cameos rather than a full fledged merging of the first and second season, because I would literally give my firstborn child to see a Space Battleship Yamato 2201! (the year of the Comet Empire arc in the original series). Awesome catch, Wisper! I’m ashamed that I didn’t spot it on my first viewing… 😳

Well, after catching up a bit on all the “new” movies and remakes I have to say I’m a bit caught in the middle.

On one side you got the old style adventure plots, on the other you got new tech mixed into old style interfaces. Also the actual action scenes got updated (more reasonable). The mixing of old and new just looks and feels weird to me. The original still feel better. *shrugs*

I dislike the Yamato: Rebirth movie the most. All that glorification and centricity is just over the top unrealistic.

Welcome to the conversation Almael! It’s great to have another Yamato/Star Blazers fan join in the discussion! I completely agree with you that original will always feel better for me. The classic animation and the the cheesy stories/action are simply a joy that can’t be fully replicated. I actually haven’t seen Rebirth yet, but from what I’ve seen and read about it I tend to agree with your reaction to it. I will say this, however, I think the people working on Yamato these days are doing a bang up job with it. I loved the live action movie, except for how they totally ruined the Gamilons, and Yamato 2199 is probably the best reboot/retelling of a classic series I have seen since Battlestar Galactica! They’ve removed the most ludicrous elements of the old show and replaced them with new plots and characters that still manage to feel right at home with the established cast and story. I wont deny that it is “weird” to see the old and new styles mixed so radically, but I think it’s been pulled off in the best way possible. All in all, I’m always going to hold the originals in a higher regard, but I’m pleased as hell to see at least one of my favorite classic sci-fi franchises receive a decent continuation/re-imagining in my lifetime!

P.S. It’s wonderful to have another fan of the classic series around! Feel free to share your thoughts or history with the show anytime you feel like it! See you around!

      Almael

Rebirth/Resurrection has a good beginning battle, and the new designs are really good but soon after it starts all the worshiping and glorification of Godai and Yamato repeatedly. As if you needed to be reminded of the reason you are watching. The story line follows some inconceivable plot that leads to the saving of life in the whole galaxy (not just known space) with Earth being a unique planet of life…. not even the oldest scifi novels I’ve read were so egocentric.

I’m not saying the staffs were doing a bad job but I think they were too focus to please the old hardcore fans than let the better ideas come to fruition.

I think the live action was best in how it managed to bring the show over to our times. Well, the Gamilons were certainly made too alien and “powerful” (to have to deal with apes 😈 )

Anyway, just like with other classics I feel the originals are mostly better and will be first for me, too.

As to history, well, I saw Yamato as a baby and when I got to understand it, it was already into its last airing. It was enough to bring me into scifi. Although, part of that was also due to the Dirty Pair show that aired at the same time. In a way they are my introduction into anime (among others), although it took a long time before I became an anime fan. The rest is a history of all the famous classic animes.

Two words my fellow Star Blazers: Yamato Podcast!

No, not from Tenchiforum, but from some diehard Yamato fans out there in cyberspace! I’ve always had visions of doing a Yamatocast of my own one day, and this is a very cool and groundbreaking development in Yamato fandom history! The first in a planned series, this episode is devoted to summaries of the basic plot/characters, and trips down memory lane with reminiscing about the early days of Star Blazers/Yamato. I am greatly anticipating the future casts, as they are expected to be filled with appearances by big wig guests from the Yamato fandom like the great Tim Eldred and August Ragone! They’ve said that they hope to bring in as many fans of Yamato as possible in on these casts, and I have high hopes of taking part in one of these some day! Anyway, take a listen for some entertaining and informative Yamato fun/knowledge.

Also, thanks for sharing the update about poor Tim Eldred’s late Starblazers.com. Yeah, I’ve been following that situation for awhile now, and it’s a great shame that the Japanese office of Voyager Entertainment shut them down, they were without a doubt THE hub of Yamato knowledge in the west and they will be sorely missed. On to more silly matters! Apparently the lack of female crew members wasn’t lost on the Japanese either, as evidenced by this gender swapped re-imagining done by 80’s star animator Kenichi Sonoda. Be warned, what is seen cannot be unseen!

This is a fan-made crossover art depicting a crossover between Yamato and “Maeterlinck’s Blue Bird”, another TV series produced by Yoshinobu Nishizaki (the producer of Yamato). Space Battleship Yamato, and Star Blazers, while ostensibly the same show, have MANY differences between them. The Japanese version is better in many respects, but there are more than a few areas in which the English dub has it beat, and one of them is without a doubt its presentation. The openings of the two shows could not be more different, with the Japanese version composed of mainly establishing shots, and the English version filled with action packed sequences!

      [BBvideo 425,350]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LKe0wARmks4[/BBvideo]Japanese Version

      [BBvideo 425,350]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eMcrep48Wz0[/BBvideo]English Version

Now, perhaps you’re thinking that this is due mainly to the fact that the Japanese opening was made in 1974 on a shoestring budget, while the English version was made in 1979, and you may be right, but then we get to season two.

      [BBvideo 425,350]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bJZmCB8DUk8[/BBvideo]Japanese Version

[BBvideo 425,350]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IOW8uJxLlUQ[/BBvideo]English Version (only watch to 1:14)

Even when Yamato was at its height of popularity (and budget) in Japan they delivered a pretty boring intro, whereas the English opening couldn’t be more exciting if it tried! Now, some of this may simply have to to with cultural differences or some form of regulatory limitation, but the fact remains that from a relatively objective standpoint Star Blazers has got Yamato beat when it comes to presentation in the opening.

Maybe the opening of Starblazers was influenced by the first season opening sequence for Space:1999.

which did basically the same thing,i.e.showed bits of action from the episode that was airing.Of course

      Mission:Impossible did the same thing.

FWIW Department:The original aircraft carrier Yamato was sunk on April 7,1945.It took over 300

American aircraft to finally sink her,and in the process the American fleet lost needed air cover

enabling several kamikaze strikes on American vessels. So we can see why the Japanese would be proud of the name of Yamato.

Ok. First off. Aircraft Carrier?! It was a Battleship. The largest, most heavily armed, and most most heavily armored of all time. Not an Aircraft Carrier. It did possess two catapults for launching small personal transport planes, but as it could not receive planes it is not an Aircraft Carrier. It was a Battleship.

Secondly, while they certainly have reason to be proud of the ship, the name “Yamato” is actually an archaic word for “Japan.” So the real pride is in the connotation of the glorious past of Japan, hence why only their best ship was worthy of the name.

Other than that, however you aren’t wrong about the circumstances of her sinking, although it’s more complex than you present it. It did indeed take over 300 planes to take her down, but more than that it required THREE SEPARATE ATTACKS over the course of 2 hours to finally send her to the bottom. Since this is an anime fan thread, I’ll let the anime do the explaining. (they take some liberties of course)

      Seriously, Aircraft Carrier???!!!

I wonder,if Anime were German instead of Japanese for instance, would this same show be named for the

      Bismark?

Somehow Space Battleship Bismark doesn’t have the same ring to it as Space Battleship Yamato even though the same overall pride.

      No.

„Kriegsraumschiff Yamato“ = space warship yamato

Besides Bismark is named after a person while yamato has a larger possible scope.

And if I remember right it also has close literal relation to peace or freedom. but I’m not sure…it’s something I picked up a very long time ago. Yeah, it sound far off doesn’t it? but that’s supposed to be the meaning of the clan name…

I wonder if that was the reason why Kira Yamato’s gundam is called Freedom.

Very good question ML! Allow me to answer:

It is implied in the first episode of the show that the war between Earth and Gamilon had been taking place for a long time before the start of the show, and that what we see in the first episode (the irradiated Earth, and the last remaining Earth fleet being destroyed) is only the end of a very long conflict. So it’s not like Gamilon came out of nowhere and suddenly Earth was left without a fleet, there were many batles they just werent shown. As the Earth forces were slowly dwindling, it became apparent to the leaders of Earth that they were going to lose the war, and that eventually all life on Earth was doomed, so they came up with a plan to build a ship that would carry enough humans into space to escape Earth and start over on another planet. The problem was that they couldn’t build it out it the open, or else the Gamilons would immediately take it out. So they had to come up with a way to construct a ship without alerting the Gamilons. The wreck of the battleship Yamato was chosen because its hull already existed, so they didn’t need to construct a ship from scratch, and because the Gamilons would never suspect it. So, by the time Starsha’s message arrives on Earth, the Yamato is already nearly completed, only its mission changes from one of colonization to a last ditch effort to save Earth.

Yamato 2199 actually goes into much more detail about the events prior to the beginning of the original show, and it confirms many things that the original simply implied.

That’s good. For a minute there it sounded like they were Mcgyvering the thing together without much of a plan or time.

It’s here! Behold the trailer for Yamato 2199 chapter 5! It looks like the show is forging a lot of new ground in terms of changes to the original plot, but I do believe we may see the epic showdown between Yamato and General Dommel/Lysis! The ammount of badass and shit hitting the fan in this trailer is mind blowing! Female crew members in combat mechs, a NEW Iscandarian(?), and what looks suspiciosly like a mutinty! And then there’s that last scene…. ugh *nerdgasms* Now if only someone would get around to uploading chapter 4 I might really have the best week ever!

EDIT: Can’t seem to get the damn video to embed properly! The link should work though. Any Mod or Admin help here would also be appreciated :D

An AMAZING article just went up on ourstarblazers.com about a presentation given by the director of Yamato 2199, with a very special guest appearance by none other than the king of Sci-fi mindscrews Hideaki Anno! Apparently Mr. Anno was a massive fan of the original Yamato, and was originally supposed to direct Yamato 2199 before he got sidetracked by some silly little side project called the Rebuild of Evangelion movies ( :Cheeks: ). It’s a great conversation between these two revered directors, who are really just fans like the rest of us! I particularly liked how Anno told the story of how he quit all his school clubs and took a bus to another prefecture just to watch Yamato as it was coming out! Anyway, HERE is the article, and I HIGHLY recommend that all Yamato/Evangelion/Anno fans read it as it really shows how powerful an influence Yamato was to the next generation of animators and story tellers!

Goro Naya, the original voice actor for Inspector Zenigata in the long-running Lupin III anime franchise, passed away on March 5 at 3:00 a.m. due to chronic respiratory failure. He was 83. He leaves behind his wife, voice actress Kachiko Hino.

Naya’s management, Theatre Echo, made the announcement of his passing on Monday. Naya was born in Hokkaido, and he dropped out of Ritsumeikan University to enter the Tōdō acting troupe. He made his debut as an actor in 1950s, and after joining Theatre Echo, he became a popular dubbing actor for overseas films.

He was the Japanese dub voice for such actors as Rick Jason (Hanley in Combat!), Clark Gable, Charlton Heston, and John Wayne. Thanks to his deep voice, Naya not only became famous for Zenigata, but also Captain Jūzō Okita in Space Battleship Yamato (Captain Avatar in Star Blazers), Yupa in Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, and the Shocker leader in various Kamen Rider series.

Ah, I was wondering when someone was going to post about this here. Yeah, I’ve seen this reported earlier but I chose not to raise it here for several reasons, mainly because as Tim Eldred (Yamato Guru) has said, this is literally only the very first shaky step in the LOOOONG corporate dance it is going to take to solidify this. All it really means is that the production company has decided that it maybe possibly some time in the future might want to release the show abroad. Happy news indeed, but I’m saving the celebration for an announcement from a western licensor.

P.S. This is the ACTUAL end of the live action movie. Don’t ask me why, not even the greatest of all Yamato fans has been able to figure it out, lol.

My guess would be if it does get licensed outside of Japan that it probably be Funi since they seem to be the most likely suspect to do so.

Lol, seriously creepy! 😆 But, perhaps there’s something more there, as Anno was MAJORLY influenced by Yamato as a child. Of course Anno didn’t design Rei’s look himself, but I’m sure that he had a role in shaping how she turned out, and I wouldn’t be surprised if some small part of her was based on Matsumoto’s endless series of Yukis!

Sweet mother of Starsha that is glorious! I swear it’s just getting more and more beautiful and well laid out as time goes on! I hope that the companies over here are taking note of how much ass this series is kicking in the Japanese cinema and release markets, because I have a feeling that it would perform likewise over here! Either way, I find myself once again obsessively checking to see if the latest Yamato is available. I wouldn’t trade it for the world!

Yeah, sadly ever since Voyager Entertainment fired Tim Eldred and nuked the starblazers.com site the prices have only gotten worse. The sets were never cheap, but Tim would often offer pretty good holiday/weekend/bundle deals that made them much more affordable. I was fortunate enough to get my sets during those blissful days, but I know that they still turn up on amazon and ebay for relatively cheap every once in a while. At this point, I’m more hoping for a box set of the 2199 blu-rays once they are all released.
Well with prices like that it does seem like the next Matsumoto title I buy won’t be anything with Starblazers or Yamato in the name.Unless I happen to see at B & N and have the money that is.

Also, StarBlazers.com is back, in some form, and has a Press Release about 2199. Doesn’t necessarily mean Voyager Ent. actually licensed it though. They likely partnered with a larger anime company to release it. FUNimation perhaps? Could be announced at their panel tomorrow.

Yeah I probably should have reported on all this when I first learned of it a couple days ago, but I was mainly trying to refine my comments to something a little more insightful than ZOMG STAR BLAZERS! Lol, but yeah it looks like we are getting closer every day to a western release of the 2199 series. My general impression of the video promo is that it looks more like a pitch vid to the western licensing companies rather than an actual promo vid for an imminent release. All the info given about how influential and loved the classic show was is clearly meant to tempt some company to pick it up, and the subtitles that say Argo while the Japanese audio is clearly saying Yamato (which you can be damn sure wont happen in an eventual release) is obviously meant to play on the nostalgia factor. I would give my left kidney to have heard the dub clip shown at AX, and would really like some clarification about something mentioned in a link above about a separate YAMATO 2199 dub. Are we getting two different dubs, one Star Blazers and one Yamato? bth_JurassicPark4News

Anyway, the long corporate dance I spoke of a few months back seems to be moving along at a decent clip, so I will continue to have hope and wait for more info to come down the pipe!

It would be interesting to see if that is what they might have in mind.Having a release of both Starblazers and

Yamato would be interesting since it would provide a nice way of comparing the two shows. One could only hope that they would.

Just watched episode 1 of season 2. Old villains, new villains (well, in a relative sense as I’ve already watched Farewell), new ships and mysterious alien messages. Its already shaping up to be quite the sequel. As usual, the bad guys go about underestimating the Star force, also unsurprisingly they quickly brush off Desslok’s warnings. Its not hard to guess how things will turn out for them in the end 😉

Nova, Sandor and IQ-9 were on Earth right? So that power-overload reached all the way there? But the new ship didn’t seem to have been affected by it, unless they were just quick to fix the problem too?

Yeah, that is probably the one and only thing that they changed from the second movie that irks me. In the movie the marines, and especially Knox/Saito were honorable and all around standup guys, whereas in the show they seemingly just exist to be a constant pain in Wildstar’s ass. Oh well, I suppose they had to throw in some differences to keep people interested in the show till the really important changes happen at the end.

One more reason to love Yamato 2199:

      [BBvideo 425,350]http://youtu.be/_J6h9X_sJ8M[/BBvideo]

Any other anime these days would have turned this into an excuse for fanservice out the wazoo, but what we see here is a beautiful depiction of a joyous crew coming together after a harrowing experience! Don’t forget that these people haven’t been able to swim in a real ocean for many years due to the devastation wrought on Earth. Hats off to 2199 for keeping it classy and proving that in the right hands even a “beach episode” can be emotionally meaningful!

Anyways, I finished episode 9. Lots of retrocartoonitis (as in, inconsistencies, wierd frame transitions, awkward dialogue, etc.) in this one. My new word should totally be in the dictionary 😎

Knox needs some flying lessons 😆

Nova must hold the world record for speed changing or something. After they capture the enemy pilot, she enters the medical room in her standard yellow suit, but by the next frame she’s walked across the room to Wildstar and the Doc and is now in her nurses outfit. Gotta love retro cartoons 😉

And while they were examining parts of the enemy ship I noticed that the guy who was talking about uniform fabrics had crazy sharp cheekbones 😯

“Dr. Sane fixed him some lunch and now they’re sitting around drinking milk together.”

“I’m sorry it isn’t fresh milk. You have to get that from cows.”

      Again with the milk 😆

White Comet Fleet: “Thats the Argo, distance 2000 megameters.”

I’ve actually seen this set in person! It was at a retro gaming shop at my old college town, and it always sat way high up on a shelf over the register. It even had tapes for all 5 of the Japanese subtitled movies as well. I would frequently ogle it, and eventually the store owners tried to pawn it off on me, because it had apparently become an un-sellable albatross, lol. I would have loved to own it for purely collector’s sake, but 18 VHS tapes is a deceptively huge space commitment, and since I already own all of it on DVD anyway I just never felt the need. I do hope they eventually find a good home though, it would be a shame for them to rot on that shelf forever, lol.

I don’t know how many people still have VCRs these days or even either DVD/VCR or Bluray/VCR hybrids

as that would be the only real problem with giving them away. But yeah, totally agree with you chuck that

it be sad if all they did was rot away like that.

Pricing and availability information has been revealed. Unsurprisingly, they’re set at almost-but-not-quite-JP prices. But very few places actually sell things for full MSRP, so it should end up being slightly cheaper.

    Episode 13: COMPLETE kiyonesmile1

It took me almost three months but I’m glad to finally be resuming Star Blazers! There’s a certain kind of itch that can only be scratched by retro cartoons. My itch was getting very… uh, itchy? But Star Blazers definitely hits the spot. I guess you could say its just the itch ointment I was looking for…

    Kiyofacepalm1

Well, that got… weird. Definitely not the best analogy I’ve come up with 😳 😆

Anywho, onward to the actual episode!

I don’t think I’ve talked about it before, but one thing I’ve always loved about this show was the wispy, dramatic, and extremely destructive explosions that seem to dissolve or evaporate the building, ship, planet, etc that gets blown up. I suppose its merely a product of a bygone era in animation where everything was meticulously drawn by hand. You certainly don’t see animated explosions like that nowadays.

Man, Invidia is quite the manipulator isn’t she? She basically seems to be running the whole operation from behind the scenes!

Dr. Sane: “Who are the flowers for? Is it possible they’re for Derek Wildstar?”

    Nova: “Trelaina.”

    It’s happening!

The above is the Japanese 2199 website, and the glorious banner currently displayed there is the first key artwork released from the previously announced 2199 feature film coming out this year! No new info yet on this film, such as what it will be about, or even if it will involve new content at all, but they do have a late autumn release date posted! *Checks off Episode 14*

    Another large gap between episodes and another hefty post. I really need to keep the ball rolling this time, and to learn to not type so much… ^^;

This episode stayed pretty serious for the most part. It didn’t have many unintentionally humorous lines. That lengthy tank battle at the beginning was excellent. More crazy-awesome 70’s explosions, and we finally got to see the Marines put their money where there mouth’s were and show that they’re more than just rude, womanizing slobs.

So, apparently all the enemies that the Marines were fighting were “robots.” I assume that was a change made to the dub script?

Desslock is just too smart for Invidia. He quickly saw right through scheming badass1

But then after she arrests him she goes straight to Zordar and says they need to find someone to defeat the Star Force. I don’t really see the logic there. Desslock was already going that, so shouldn’t she have just waited to see if he succeeded or not first before having him apprehended? I guess she just wanted to get rid of him as soon as possible?

I don’t believe I brought this up in any of my previous posts, but Treleina’s voice is… odd. Not that the voice actress wasn’t a good fit per se, but the almost singy, high-pitched way they had her talk is pretty weird. I imagine it sounded fine back in the 80’s, but in 2014 certain lines of hers sound almost comical.

And to top it off, Treleina goes all Moses on us when she parts the lake with a wave of her hand 😆

My favorite quote of the episode, and unlike most of the ones I tend to post about, one that was actually SUPPOSED to be funny 😉

*wrapping up a radio conversation on the Argo’s bridge*

Treleina: “Thank you Mark Venture. I hope you will be coming too.”

Venture: “Oh, yes! Of course! Just as soon as I can.”

Treleina: “Then I will see you very soon Mark Venture.”

Homer: “Wait ’till she sees Venture. She might change her mind.”

    Venture: “Wiseguy…”

    This one comes in 2nd:

Nova: ” I hope Derek won’t forget to give the flowers to Treleina.”

Dr. Sane: “Don’t count on it Nova. You know that he has a lot of things on his mind these days.”

Nova: “He never forgets anything I ask him to do Dr. Sane.”

Dr Sane: *quick response* “Then you’ve got nothing to worry about Nova.”

Its hard to convey though a forum post, as it was mostly the quick timing of Dr. Sane’s response that made the line funny, since he just got done telling her mere seconds earlier that Wildstar probably wouldn’t remember her request.

And according to the preview, Episode 15 = lots of drama. So join me again soon for the next exciting, drama-filled episode of WisperG watches Star Blazers.

The title and date of the Yamato 2199 movie has been announced! :D

JP: Uchū Senkan Yamato 2199: Hoshi-Meguru Hakobune

English: Space Battleship Yamato 2199: Star-Voyaging Ark (or maybe could be translated as Starfaring? That sounds better to me.)

The new film will premiere on December 6th following a compilation film of the series on October 11th.

Hot news: Funimation’s release of the live-action Yamato movie has left the launch pad. After viewing it myself, I can give my endorsement. The subtitles are the same ones seen in the Eleven Arts theatrical release (Eleven Arts’ name is also on the disc), there are a few special features with subtitles (though unfortunately not the more substantial ones from the Japanese discs) and – to my complete surprise – an ENGLISH DUB. This was hitherto thought to be impossible, but here it is anyway. It’s not great (the voices don’t sound very much like the originals or indeed very different from each other) but it’s not bad, either. My only real beef is the occasional mispronunciation, like GaMEElas, but I gave up any hope of correcting that long ago.

If you’ve been waiting to get your hands on a legit copy of the movie, this is the one you’ve been waiting for. It goes without saying that piracy is no longer necessary, and I encourage EVERYONE to replace their “temporary” copies.

Wow. Was not expecting a dub. Seems like the release is a good one though, so everybody grab a copy!

    1) key visual

    2) enemy will be White comet empire. To clarify, while they didn’t say White Comet Empire, one word did come up on the screen… GATLANTIS.

    3) BUT it won’t be another SARABA. [Farewell to Yamato]

No animation for the new movie has actually been completed yet and they only have 6 months to go…

Kazutaka Miyatake, the original mechanical designer, detailed it and worked on its form, and Leiji Matsumoto and Toei Animation even supervised its production.

The model uses metal to give it that warship weight, although the bridge and windows are made of clear material. It will come with a mini Galaxy Express 999 train model, all the better to recreate your favorite Galaxy Express 999 scenes with. Finally, the ship will have light and sound effects. The bridge, stern, and engine nozzles will light up, and a remote control allows you to play three different music tracks and five different sound effects (including a jet noise for the engines).

The Soul of Chogokin Arcadia retails in October for 30,240 yen (about $298).

I note that the live action movie is listed as $17.99 at Rightstuf’s Online Catalog but $21.99 in the print one.Think

when I get around to it will order off the Online Catalog if it’s still at $17.99.

2199 AD. Yamato tried to leave behind the great Magellan system, after receiving a “Cosmo Reverse System” at his destination, Iskandal. However, suddenly, he encounters a mysterious group at the edge of the Magellan system. He finds out that they are called the “Gatlantis,” and that their leader is the Gutaba expedition group’s governor-general who calls himself “Goran Dagam of the Thunder,” and the governor-general demands that Yamato be handed over to him. Yamato, wanting to hurry to Earth, escapes the fray. However, Yamato is attacked by a vicious beam weapon called the “Flame Direct Attack Cannon” that can transcend space.

Yamato was able to retreat within a hair’s breadth, but ends up getting himself lost, and finds himself in a strangely-colored irregular dimension. He decides to turn off the engine on the ship, and explore the mysterious planet. In order to collect information, Kodai, Kirio, Sawamura, Niima, and Aihara also arrive at the planet. What they saw when they arrived was a ship that wasn’t supposed to be there.

Dagam chases after the traces of Yamato’s warp, and also reaches the strangely-colored galaxy. The planet on which Yamato landed was in fact what Dagam had been looking for all along.

The Sports Nippon newspaper is reporting on Monday that a Hollywood live-action film adaptation of the hit anime series Space Battleship Yamato has been green-lit. According to the newspaper, the film will open as soon as 2017 under the title Star Blazers. Shoji Nishizaki, the adopted son of the late Yamato producer Yoshinobu Nishizaki, is listed as the executive producer, and Sports Nippon indicates that it is possible that Japanese actors will appear in the cast.

The Deadline website reported last October that McQuarrie had been attached to direct Skydance Productions’ planned live-action film remake of Star Blazers. McQuarrie is the screenwriter of The Usual Suspects, Valkyrie, Jack Reacher, and Jack the Giant Slayer, and he had already been attached to write the project when Skydance (True Grit, World War Z, Star Trek: Into Darkness, G.I. Joe: Retaliation) was negotiating for the rights in 2011.

McQuarrie had revealed in an interview in December 2012 that the film was still in negotiations. Skydance registered the “Starblazersthemovie.com” domain last year.

Comic Natalie notes that Voyager Entertainment, the rights holder for Yamato, made the announcement. Star Blazers is the tentative title for the project for now. Skydance Productions CEO David Ellison discussed the timeframe, “I can’t say definitely, but I want the film to open in 2017 or 2018.”

Well that was a whole lot of speculating.

While this rumor is certainly very exciting, and I personally love and support the idea of a big budget Skydance Star Blazers film, I’m taking this with a mountain of salt. Plans (and rights) for an American Star Blazers film have been flitting about Hollywood almost three decades now, and the same basic facts and obstacles have remained the same. Voyager still owns the Star Blazers name, studios are still extremely gun-shy about pulling the trigger on a big budget anime adaptation (they remember Dragon Ball, Astroboy, and Speed Racer), and the all important built-in audience is still extremely small. it’s all going to come down to how much the people at Skydance are willing to gamble on it, and how convincing a pitch they can make. The recent success of adaptations of Japanese titles like Godzilla and Edge of Tomorrow give me more hope than I’ve had in the past for such a project moving forward, but it’s still going to be a very hard sell. In the end I will remain positive and hopeful, but I’m not holding my breath.

The 2010 live action movie has nothing to do with 2199, seeing as it came out two years before 2199 ever aired, but your point stands, such as it is. It would definitely be an interesting study in the comparison of big budget sci-fi films on both sides of the Pacific. The recent Godzilla movie is probably the best analogy to such a comparison.

But the difference is everyone knows about Godzilla so it was an easy sell.I’m not so sure as how many outside of diehard anime or Sci Fi fans are even aware of Starblazers.

Japanese fan buzz purportedly from an early look at issue 11 of Ship’s Log, the Yamato Premium Fan Club magazine has it that Exec Producer Souji Nishizaki reveals that pre-production is underway on a follow-up to 2013’s Space Battleship Yamato 2199 classic sci-fi remake, with studio Xebec currently doing hiring and research.

Reportedly, the new series will run another 26 episodes, doing the earlier work’s format of theatrical screenings then broadcast starting later in 2016. The story will be inspired by 1978’s Farewell to Space Battleship Yamato feature and Space Battleship Yamato II TV series. Original content is being planned for after this season.

Before we get too carried away with ourselves, the Star Blazers.com Facebook page makes sure to add…

Yeah, it’s very iffy at this point, but it’ll be very easy to verify. It’s someone claiming to have gotten hold of a magazine early and relaying what they found inside, which isn’t exactly an uncommon occurrence. We’ll know for sure in a few days once the magazine officially drops and other people get their hands on it.

I know. I was mostly just trying to be funny since I feel like I haven’t seen him around for ages. Although it kinda does feel like a lot of the old-timers are dropping like flies after venting their frustrations with OVA 4 and the future direction of the Tenchi franchise.

Indeed, I saw this pop up the other day on Tim Eldred’s CosmoDNA facebook page! Super exciting if true! Honestly, I never really doubted that they would continue the remake treatment, seeing as how the 2199 series made basically all the money ever in theaters over there. The Comet Empire arc is also universally considered to be the pinacle of the classic series, so the hype was always going to be intense. If this does turn out to be true, I think the only thing that could make this even more exciting would be if they announced that Anno will direct it (he was originally planned to direct 2199). That would undoubtedly lead to Star Wars level hype across the entire industry. Anyway, I will definitely be glued to Tim’s page for the next few days waiting for that sweet sweet confirmation.
    Speak of the devil!

Any ways yeah,it would be nice if they could get confirmation that it was actually in the works.

I wonder which will happen first:they actually do the follow up of 2199 or we finally get the NA

DVD of the third Rebuild movie for Eva.

OK, Ukinojo (or anyone else that wants to watch Blazer/Yamato) here’s a complete list of the whole franchise in release order. Chuck made a similar list awhile back, but it’s been consumed by the bowels of this thread, so I figured it was worth making another.

    First, some notes:

Only the three original television seasons and the live-action movie have dubs.

Anything that doesn’t say “(Season #)” after it is a movie or OVA.

    – Star Blazers: The Quest for Iscandar/Space Battleship Yamato (Season 1)

    – Space Battleship Yamato: The Movie

    * Compilation of first season. Adds new footage.

    – Farewell, Space Battleship Yamato

    – Star Blazers: The Comet Empire/Space Battleship Yamato II (Season 2)

    – Yamato: The New Voyage

    – Be Forever Yamato

    – Star Blazer: The Bolar Wars/Space Battleship Yamato III (Season 3)

    – Final Yamato

    – Yamato 2520

    * OVA. Left unfinished at 3 eps. Distant sequel.

    – Space Battleship Yamato: Resurrection

    * Has both a theatrical and director’s cut versions, the latter of which is, oddly, the shorter of the two. Each features a different ending.

A follow-up movie to Resurrection was planned, bit it’s been 6 years and we’ve not heard a peep about it.

If anyone’s curious, chronological order for the original timeline is almost exactly the same except that 2520 and Resurrection are swapped.

    From there you have:

    – Space Battleship Yamato (live-action movie)

And lastly, the modern remake and it’s sequel film:

    – Space Battleship Yamato 2199 (Season 1?)

    – Space Battleship Yamato 2199: A Voyage to Remember (aka Tsuioku No Koukai)

    * Compilation of 2199. No new footage.

    – Space Battleship Yamato 2199: Odyssey of the Celestial Ark (aka Hoshi-Meguru Hakobune)

As you can see from some of the previous posts in this thread, there are rumors of a possible sequel to 2199 coming next year that would pick up after the Odyssey film and adapt the story of the original 2nd season, The Comet Empire.

So if I read currently what you’re saying is in the chronology that the live action follows right after

    2520?

No. My comment on chronological order only applied to the list that came before it, not anything after. That’s why I specifically said “…chronological order for the original timeline

The live action movie’s plot is based on the first season of the original series.

That’s why I listed the live action movie and 2199 separately, because as remakes/adaptations they don’t fit into the chronology of the original series.

A new anime series in the Star Blazers/Space Battleship Yamato anime franchise has been confirmed under the title Uchū Senkan Yamato 2202: Ai no Senshi-tachi (Space Battleship Yamato 2202: Warriors of Love or Star Blazers 2202: Warriors of Love).

The staff has also opened an official website for the series. The website had been registered in Japan on January 8, and volume 13 of Yamato Kōkai Nikki: Yamato Crew Premium Fun Club Magazine, the official Yamato Fan Club magazine, shipped this week with the news.

Nobuyoshi Habara (Fafner and Fafner EXODUS director, episode director and storyboard writer for Star Blazers 2199) is directing the new anime, and Harutoshi Fukui (Mobile Suit Gundam UC original novel writer, screenplay for Harlock: Space Pirate) is writing and overseeing the scripts. The late Yoshinobu Nishizaki is credited with the original work, and his son Shoji Nishizaki (Star Blazers 2199 planning, producer for Space Battleship Yamato Resurrection) is the executive producer.

You don’t sound to happy about that. I would think it’s a pretty safe bet it’ll be a re-imagining of the Comet Empire arc, while perhaps pulling some material from at least the two subsequent movies or even the Bolar Wars. That is exactly what 2199 was with The Quest for Iscandar, after all, and considering how successful that was, I can’t see why they wouldn’t do the same for the remaining seasons/movies of the original series.

The Comet Empire was my favorite season of the original series, so this has me very, very excited. Now, if only we could get a proper English release of 2199…
