What has the Tenchi-verse helped spawn form it? What anime, manga, or other work has it inspired? I am not exactly talking about cameos in other tenchi-verses, fandom, spiritual ancestors, or real places. Tenchi has taken a little bit of everything in it’s life and made it good in it’s own way. However what has been made in response to it’s presence.

Well it’s. The harem that spear headed the harem genre even though it wasn’t the first. And created the formula we all know now

First off I want to say that this is a fantastic subject!

Often times it goes without notice just how truly groundbreaking, and for a lack of a better term “good” Tenchi Muyo! truly was.

Like so many shows in the 90’s, it broke ground on establishing a genre, and for Tenchi it is ever so lovingly referred to as “The Godfather of the Harem Genre”, even though it itself was not a harem show.

Now some may say “But this is a Tenchi Muyo forum? Isn’t that a bit bias to say?” To which I would show you an excerpt from anime historian Jonathan Clements book “The Anime Encyclopedia” which was released in 2001

Aside from the fact that Tenchi is being put in the same vein as Eva, the fact that Tenchi is still putting out anime every couple of years (regardless of quality) is a testament to just how strong the show stayed with people.

On the english side of things, the long running, well established web-comic No Need for Bushido takes it name from the now classic “No Need” moniker that Tenchi (or more accurately Pioneer) created, if you say “No Need for (blank)” anyone who has seen Tenchi will know what you’re referencing.

Anime News Network has a column called “The List”, where they list anime based on a certain criteria, and they did one on “7 Gateway” Anime Sure to Get Newbies Hooked” , and what was number 1? That’s right, Tenchi Muyo!

Why did they give Tenchi that spot? Why did Jonathan Clements make that comment about Tenchi? Why did No Need for Bushido so lovingly take their namesake as a part of their title?

Because as I’ve said so many times in so many Tenchicasts, is that Tenchi Muyo more than any other anime has something for EVERYONE, Sci-Fi? Got it, Fantasy? Got it, Romantic Comedy? Got it, Action? Got it, Mecha? Got it, Lovable Underdog? Got it, Amazingly deep and diverse cast? Got it, often times I’m hard pressed to find an anime better than Tenchi in that department, and honestly, there’ll never be another anime like it.

I really don’t know if Tenchi Moyu was the original harem comedy or not,but what I do know is that it did give us the harem comedy archtypes that everyone else has copied.

Just like Sailor Moon was neither the original Magic Girl Show(that was Sally The Witch)

nor the first fighter Magic Girl Show(Cutey Honeyanyone?) it still was the one that

everyone after it copied because it was the one that produced all the archtypes that later shows would use.

So the important thing isn’t whether or not Tenchi was the first but the fact that it was the one that introduced all the important archtypes that others would copy.

And this in the end is the most important impact that Tenchi has had on anime.

(Of course I am not forgetting all the memorable characters and the fact that it did give us

Orikasa Ai and Yokoyama Chisa as well as Petrea Burchard.)

TL:DR Tenchi has touched a lot of people.

Friend of mine tagged me on Facebook earlier in a picture of a book he’s reading at the moment.

Granted, there are a few errors on this page, but it’s pretty wild to see Tenchi get a direct shoutout for GXP, in Tokyo (Shin Tenchi), and Okuda’s manga in a book.

The segment comes from Impulse by Steven Gould, the third part of a series of novels.

I believe they inspired 3 authors? Idk about the series though the fact its hard to tell what they are based on.
Grammar? But then again how many YA novels are grammatically correct in any case?

I notice that the author uses the Japanese title: Shin Tenchi Muyo instead of Tenchi in Tokyo.Trying hard with that otaku street cred?

It seemed like it was trying hard to be the otaku, or just wanted get it right. But it also sounded like promoting a bit.

What was the name of the book btw.

      you got it?

Ok… but I have to say the author name kinda reminds me of Stephen J. Gould the famous biologist.

Don’t know, never had a tattoo. But I’d imagine it takes hours or weeks depending on what type of tattoo and how many layers it needs

I would think for the more elaborate ones it would take weeks.

Pioneers/Geneon flagship anime series then Funimation acquiring the rights because it is a solid show and becoming it’s flagship.

      :-?

I thought DBZ was considered Funi’s flagship series, does this mean Tenchi is replacing it?

As much as I like DxD, it’s mostly ecchi.

Tenchi is a solid series that has something for everyone, and an harem archetype.

Dxd is new, but Tenchi did it first and came back in Ai.

I don’t mind if we pretend that Tenchi is, but then again when is anyone going to tell

      Funi? 😆
