These lines and the entire episode illustrate how difficult communication would be with an alien species whose
thought patterns are so completely alien that normal means of communication wouldn’t work.The whole episode
centers around one man’s(Captain Dathon) attempt to make another man(Captain Picard) understand him.
And of course the ending dialog after Picard gets it finally:
“His sails furled.”
“His eyes…his eyes opened!”
between Picard and the alien second in command after Picard relates Dathon’s death.
