Way behind on writing up the seasonal list, but better late than never. blush1 As usual, show listings can be found at
andAniChart .ANN~~~
The problem with making this list after the season has already started is that I’ve inevitably already heard first impressions of some of these shows rather than blindly noting shows that caught my eye for whatever reason, so I’m gonna try and post my initial thoughts on these, despite already having decided to skip a few due to poor reception.
Definitely Watching:– ClassicaLoid (An anime comedy featuring classical music composers? No ideas what to make it that, but I will definitely watch it)
– Occultic;Nine (From the creator of Steins;Gate. Could be fantastic! Or it could be totally incomprehensible…)
– Time Bokan 24 (I’ve been intrigued by most of Tatsunoko’s modernized reboots/remakes/thinly-veiled sequels of their classic properties they’ve been putting out over the past few years. Time to see what Time Bokan is all about!)
– Yuri!!! on Ice (An anime about male figure skating sounds promising. And it’s from studio MAPPA and the director of Fujiko Mine to boot. The first series inspired by one of the Animator Expo shorts, from the same director)
Interested:– Cheating Craft (Art looks nice, no idea what to make of the premise though. But it’s short-form, so I’ll probably check it out)
– Digimon Universe: Appli Monsters (I’ve heard this is one of the best new Digimon TV series in quite awhile. I would totally watch it if it were to get picked up for a simulcast, but I’m not holding my breath)
– Drifters (I loved Hellsing Ultimate, but the Drifters manga never really caught my attention. I’ll certainly give the anime a shot though. Hopefully it’s got that sense of fun that Hellsing had, rather than just a super serious gore-fest)
– Flip Flappers (Magical Girls aren’t really my thing, but the silly title, colorful art direction and above average animation have caught my attention)
– Nanbaka (Very Colorful. Looks like it could be fun)
– Nobunaga no Shinobi (Short-form series. Sounds amusing)
– Izetta: The Last Witch (Alternate-world version of WWII, with a mild supernatural bend thanks to the inclusion of a “witch” *cough*magicalgirl*cough*. Sounds interesting and animation looks good, but the implied yuri pairing on the poster isn’t exactly a selling point for me)
– Kiss Him, Not Me/Watashi ga Motete Dousunda (Rom-com about a fujoshi surrounded by hot guys that she’d rather see going out with each other, than trying to go out with her. I’ve read some of the early manga chapters and was quite amused by it, though I hear her obsession with fantasizing about these straight guys hooking up gets a little cringey later on. We’ll see how it goes, or if the anime even gets that far)
On The Fence:– Bloodivores (Sounds mildly interseting, but looks rather generic)
– Fune wo Amu (Visually it looks good, but the premise is… odd, to say the least. If nothing else, I’ve never seen another anime about the life of a man who works at a dictionary publisher)
– Kitaro’s Yokai Picture Diary/Kiitarou Shounen no Youkai Enikki (Art looks nice)
Total pre-season count: 15
Realistic final count: 4 or 5
~~~
Now, if I stop pretending I haven’t already watched the first episode or read reviews for some of these, both
Driftersand Izettaget bumped up to “Definitely Watching”, while Occultic;Ninedrops down to just “Interested”, Touken Ranbu: Hanamarujoins the “Interested” category and Bloodivoresgets the boot completely. - October 8, 2016 at 6:25 AM
I’ve heard different numbers come from different people before, but I recall Monty saying they had
at leastenough story material planned to cover 10-ish seasons a few years back. Ruby’s VA once said 20, though she may have been exaggerating. I think we can expect a minimum of 10 seasons, but probably more. But of course, besides what’s been pre-planned, they can always just come up with more stuff as they go too and many ideas surely expand in scope after they start writing, so who knows if that’s accurate anymore. Ultimately, I think it’ll go until they decide they simply don’t want to do it anymore, after they’ve at least covered all of the most important material Miles, Kerry and Monty had planned from the beginning.
Let’s share our favorite theme songs from the current season! I still have a number of shows I’ve yet to start (and realistically may not get around to before the season is over), but here’s what stood out to me from what I have seen. ~~
I didn’t care for Berserk’s opening at first, but it’s grown on me, and while I don’t think it really feels like a Berserk song, the ED is quite nice.
Berserk OP – “Inferno” by 9mm Parabellum Bullet
[BBvideo]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cDbctEO2qjQ [/BBvideo] Berserk ED – “Meimoku no Kanata” by Nagi Yanagi
– This video caught the end of the first episode. Skip to 0:39 for the start of the actual music if the timestamp doesn’t work
[BBvideo]http://youtu.be/lDwqAwNyDNA?t=39s [/BBvideo] ~~
DR3: Future’s music was a little more by-the-numbers, but still pretty catchy. I’m quite fond of the ED.
Danganronpa 3: Future Arc OP – “DEAD OR LIE” by Maon Kurosaki feat. TRUSTRICK
[BBvideo]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yh8KGgsoH6w [/BBvideo] Danganronpa 3: Future Arc ED – “Recall THE END” by TRUSTRICK
[BBvideo]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qLpHT3NeDq0 [/BBvideo] ~~
Meanwhile, the Despair Arc nailed the OP and ED both visually and musically. The ED is even sung in-character by one of the voice actresses. A fair warning to anyone who may have an interest in Danganronpa though, a few aspects of both videos are a bit spoilery if you think about them to hard.
Danganronpa 3: Despair Arc OP – “Kami Iro Awase” by Binaria
[BBvideo]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=48SjkQVqQDk [/BBvideo] Danganronpa 3: Despair Arc ED – “Absolute Hope Birthday” by Megumi Ogata (in-character as Nagito Komaeda)
The summer anime season is right around the corner, meaning it’s list time once again! The lineup can be found on
andAniChart .ANN~~~
A trip threw a wrench into my anime watching for an extended period of time, so I still have a number of things I’ll still be watching from last season. Not yet sure how well that bodes for all of the newer shows…
Absolutely Watching:– Berserk (Despite it crossing a few lines from time-to-time, I’ve always been fond of Berserk. Excited to finally see some post-Golden Age content animated.)
– Danganronpa 3: Future Arc (I still can’t believe we’re actually getting double Danganronpa in the same season.)
– Danganronpa 3: Despair Arc (These two collectively are easily my #1 most anticipated anime of the season.)
– Mod Psycho 100 (The
otherseries from One Punch Man’s creator. Also, Studio Bones. Of courseI’m checking it out!) Interested:– 91 Days (Looks interesting. I like when anime break away from modern Japan into more historical settings.)
– Hitori no Shita: the outcast (Piques my interest, but not sure what to expect. Character designs are nice.)
– Servamp (Doesn’t scream “must watch” to me, but could be fun.)
– Taboo Tattoo (Sounds quite interesting. It just barely missed being included in the “Absolutely Watching” category.)
On The Fence:– Orange (Down-to-earth romance/drama series are highly hit-or-miss for me. Looks good, but we’ll see if it holds my interest)
– Qualidea Code (Character designer for the recent Fate anime. Will either be really interesting or really by-the-numbers. Can’t tell yet.)
– Regalia: The Three Sacred Stars (Fantasy and mecha? Can’t decide if it’s intriguing or just another variation on the generic fantasy school setting.)
– ReLIFE (Again, romance/drama shows are really hit-or-miss for me, but the premise is very intriguing.)
– Rewrite (Related to a VN. An anime-original route rather than a straight adaptation. Sounds mildly interesting, but has that really generic, big-eyed moe look that was big a few years ago.)
– Tales of Zestiria the X (Despite Ufotable’s god-tier animation, I’m still on the fence about this one. Still can’t tell if this is a straight adaptation or not. I like the Tales games, but haven’t played Zestiria yet, so if it is, I’ll probably avoid it due to spoiler concerns.)
Total pre-season count: 14
Realistic final count: 5 or 6
I finished writing this over two months ago, but apparently I forgot to submit it. So here it is now… ~~~
Here’s the usual spoiler reminder for the main series. I mention some things about Naruto’s family, the death of an important character, and a significant event carried out by a major villain. You have been warned.
Naruto Shippuden[/color] The Movie”>I really should stop skimming reviews for things I’m going to watch anyways at some point, it sometimes skews my opinions, though in this case it probably helped. I hadn’t heard great things about this movie, so I went in with pretty low expectations, but came out pleasantly surprised. As expected, it is a step down from Will of Fire, but it was still an enjoyable movie.
This was basically
Back to the Future: Naruto Edition. While pursuing this movie’s cliche bad guy, Naruto and Yamato are sucked into a mysterious light after the villain removes a sealing Jutsu from some kind of chakra ley-line or something. Naruto wakes up 20 years in the past. The ruins they were in are now a sprawling city with enormous towers. Something fishy is going on in this city, but unlike Bonds, this movie handles the twist rather well. I was genuinely surprised when it happened, and that knowledge gives a completely different context to a scene from earlier in the movie. Aside from the time travel gimmick, the plot is the standard “movie bad guy wants power to rule the world/nation/universe, Naruto inspires someone to never give up, etc.” filler/movie formula, but I think it’s one of the better examples of that overused premise.
Since it’s set in the past, Naruto bumped into a squad made up of Minato (Naruto’s father, and the future 4th Hokage), little Kakashi and the fathers of Choji and Shino who happened to be on a covert operation in this same city. It was cool to see the adults (and Minato especially) getting more screentime, though they don’t play a huge role.
Speaking of rolls, I found myself rolling my eyes a bit when it was suggested, for the fourth time, that the Leaf Ninja split up, with Naruto protecting the Queen while Minato and the others would hang back and fight bad guys. It made sense that the Jonin would put the Genin on guard duty, but it was still a rather overused way of keeping Naruto together with the movie-protagonist and to keep the Leaf adults from hogging the spotlight for long.
Speaking of the movie protagonist,
, I liked her well enough. She’s the young queen of this city, and although she spends a good portion of the movie in denial about some of the questionable goings-on in the city that her fishy adviser seems to be spearheading, with Naruto’s encouragement she eventually has her “stepping up” moment, and has that “tough princess” thing down, in a similar vein to the likes of fellow red-head Nausicaa (On a basic level, at least. Don’t want to give her too much credit).SaraOne thing the movie didn’t do well was giving a proper sense of how many people really lived in this enormous city. One of the sub-plots (one of the “goings-on” I mentioned in the last paragraph) involved citizens being kidnapped and used as slave labor in an underground factory. Naruto and Sara meet a small, ragtag group of “rebels” made up of a wide age-range of people from the young to the elderly (but mostly consisting of children) who have all had family members taken away. The “main” ones that Naruto and Sara interacted with were actually quite likable, so it’s a shame they basically just played bit parts. Naruto and Co. eventually spring a modest number of people out of imprisonment (couldn’t have been much more than 20 or 30), with almost all of them coincidentally being the direct family members of the rebels, and then act as though there wasn’t anyone else to save. To be fair, they were quickly pursued by the villain, so they didn’t really have the time to save anybody else right then, and presumably the rest of the citizens are tracked down and rescued after Naruto and Yamato return to the present, but the movie doesn’t actually address this. Those 20-ish people and the rebel group are the only citizens we see in the entire movie.
The ending wasn’t “bad” by any means, but a part of it did make me groan. It pulled the “we all know too much, so we have to erase our memories” thing, which is a big pet peeve of mine, and all because Naruto couldn’t keep his big mouth shut and kept talking about a bunch of stuff from the future that the Leaf ninja in the past kept telling him to stop talking about.
One thing I found rather odd was that Naruto quickly suspects Minato of being his father, even though he hasn’t been told about his parentage yet. It could be (and probably is) that he realized the uncanny resemblance upon seeing him in-person rather than just his stony face on the mountain behind the village (that is, assuming he hasn’t seen a normal picture of him before), which could make sense, though while actually watching the movie it just felt rather odd that he jumped to that conclusion on his own so quickly after seeing him without any kind of prompting or hint.
Visually, the film was nothing mind-blowing, but the animation was pretty solid. I loved the city’s architecture in particular. The ending theme was nice, though the rest of the soundtrack didn’t make much of an impression.
* This movie is set sometime after Naruto learns of Jiraiys’s death (ep.152) but before Pain’s assault on the Leaf Village (ep.157).* However, there isn’t a good spot in-between where the team could have gone on a mission. As soon as Naruto comes to terms with his master’s death, he agrees to help decode a message Jiraiya left behind. They’re successful in decrypting it, but Pain starts his attack on the village while they’re still trying to figure out what the message means.* This movie only fits if you assume it took several days to decrypt the message, with the characters taking breaks and doing the odd mission here and there in the interim.* Oddly, they didn’t use the familiar poofing sound when Naruto’s Shadow Clones disappear. I have no idea why they used a different sound effect.
