I know what I want for Valentine’s day! Now to find a girlfriend…

Lol, anyway, after a long conversation in mini-chat a few nights ago I was reminded of one of my favorite Evangelion products: Evangelion Re:Take.

Re:Take is a doujin (a self-published manga or graphic novel) from the early 00’s in Japan. It is completely unofficial, being essentially an illustrated fanfiction, but I thought it did an excellent job at capturing the feel and essence of what made Eva, well, Eva. It functions as a direct sequel to End of Evangelion, beginning moments after the final scene of that movie, but most of its plot actually occurs in the familiar events of the second half of the TV show as Shinji runs away (shocking, I know) from the consequences of Instrumentality and tries to undo the events which led to it. I personally think it’s a fantastic supplementary outing with the characters and stories of Eva, especially considering the authors had nothing to do with their creation! So yeah, if you are hungry for more after watching End of Eva, I highly suggest giving Re:Take a shot!

Being a doujin, there is practically zero chance Re:Take will ever see an official release outside of Japan, but fortunately for us non-Japanese Eva fans, the industrious people of the internet have produced translations. Being a doujin also means that the original release of Re:Take was filled with random porn scenes. Thankfully, however, it proved so popular with Eva fans that the creators released an “all ages” version which removed said smut, leaving only the delicious plot. Here are links to the all ages version for your reading pleasure :D

EDIT: This should be obvious by now, but it can’t hurt to say it again. THESE ARE JUST MY OPINIONS. As I said above, Re:Take is essentially a fanfiction, complete with all the liberties and divisiveness that come with that distinction. It won’t be for everybody.

I didn’t even need to translate it to know that. After all, every Yamato fan’s favorite words are “Yamato hasshin!” http://tenchiforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=23&t=445&p=11668&hilit=launch#p11668” class=”bbcode_url”>http://tenchiforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=23&t=445&p=11668&hilit=launch#p11668

No doubt she’s probably going to go up against Kill la Kill’s Ryuko, now THAT is going to be where we want everyone to vote a million times, because Kill la Kill is hot right now.

I think that’s how it’s going to be too, but we can’t afford to take it for granted. Below are the actual results for the last round:

    https://scontent-b-ord.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash3/993454_10151735303975108_57320998_n.png" />

As you can see, even though Ryoko won by over 90%, she actually got the least number of votes out of all the other winners. We need to step up the effort bigtime right NOW, and hope for a decent amount of crossover votes from the fans of previously defeated candidates. We have the benefit of both the perceived status of underdog and the novelty of being the only classic candidate in the race, but those are only small advantages. Tl;dr we need to vote more than we ever have right now if we want to make it to the final round.

It’s a magical moment when you’re driving along the 17th century streets outside of Colonial Williamsburg with your windows down and this song comes on the radio.

I was going through Starlog #197(December 1993)and saw this ad on the second page facing the cover

We’re giving you 29 hours to get out of the Galaxy

and here are three 6-packs to for your trip

18 digitally remastered cassettes in all.

The Complete Star Blazers Trilogy The Deluxe Collector’s Editions

It included all three seasons of the show including the ‘lost’ Bolar Wars episodes.

Grand total for the entire set back in 1993 including S & H was $460.

I’ve actually seen this set in person! It was at a retro gaming shop at my old college town, and it always sat way high up on a shelf over the register. It even had tapes for all 5 of the Japanese subtitled movies as well. I would frequently ogle it, and eventually the store owners tried to pawn it off on me, because it had apparently become an un-sellable albatross, lol. I would have loved to own it for purely collector’s sake, but 18 VHS tapes is a deceptively huge space commitment, and since I already own all of it on DVD anyway I just never felt the need. I do hope they eventually find a good home though, it would be a shame for them to rot on that shelf forever, lol.

Also, that last sentence of yours would probably be an apt description of the Utena movie as well. I’ve read several wildly different theories on it, and its not easy to pin down one particular meaning for… well, almost anything in that movie.

Gender roles and the sexual revolution. That’s the metaphor I walked/crawled drooling across the floor away with. Don’t ask for more specifics or reasonings, because that’s all I got, lol.

That episode of OVA 3 did it to me not only because of the info-dump and crazy plot-twists, but because of that jarring and completely uncalled for time-skip between eps.5 & 6. The gang hadn’t even met Z yet at the end of ep.5, but then ep.6 starts us off right-smack in the middle of their climactic battle. I seriously thought I’d accidentally skipped over an episode the first time I watched it.

Why does almost everyone skip the scene after the ED credits? smh

At the end of which episode? If you mean ep.5 I could have sworn I went back and checked for an extra scene just in case, but I don’t recall if there actually was anything. Then again, its been almost 2 years since I’ve seen OVA 3, so I may be forgetting something.

I believe Nobuyuki is referring to THIS. Honestly, I was never too fond of the placement of this scene for the very reason demonstrated above. It’s too easy to skip over and cause massive confusion. I understand the appeal of post-credit scenes when done correctly, i.e. the various Marvel movies, but notice that those examples never contain plot advancement that is absolutely critical to know before the outset of the next installment.

Anyway, back to topic. EoE is certainly not without it’s share of mindfuckery, but I’ve always walked away from my viewings of it feeling like, at least subconsciously, I understood what was going on and its meaning. I’ve even come to the point where I even feel an unexplainable empowerment after it’s over, as opposed to the deep rage/confusion/disappointment I felt immediately after my first viewing. There is still one part, however, that never fails to leave me utterly confused and arriving at a different conclusion each time. Yes, I’m talking about the sandbox scene. Seriously, wtf… At first it seems to be a relatively shallow and obvious metaphor, but upon closer analysis it opens a pandora’s box of infinite and conflicting symbolism/metaphors that just defies all attempts at neatly labeling it.

Lol, after watching the videos you linked Crazed, I was sent down a 2 hour trip through the rabbit hole that is Evangelion videos on Youtube, and I have emerged with nothing to show for it but bleary eyes and Komm, Susser Tod stuck in my head. It was marvelous, thank you! :D

Anyway, how about we change things up a bit? I originally asked your favorite characters, if any, and now I will ask for your favorite episode/s if any. A reminder: If you plan on going into specific detail please use the spoiler button. For me, this one is tough because there are so many fascinating and compelling episodes, especially towards the end of the show. There really is only one that can take the crown though, and for me that is episode 24. By this point in the show poor Shinji was barely hanging onto his sanity and sense of purpose/self by a thread. His friends are gone, his fellow pilots are distant and unapproachable, and he is utterly alone. Into this came Kaworu, whose entire 12 minute presence fundamentally changed the tenor of the show. For the first time in the entire show Shinji finds someone who loves him unconditionally. Unfortunately, fate was not on his side. The revelation that Kaworu is the last angel cuts deeply at Shinji’s psyche, while at the same time re-invigorating his will to fight. Even that small blessing was not to last, however, as Kaworu’s final sacrifice and death at the unwilling hands of Shinji totally destroy Shinji’s morale and faith in himself and the Evas. This episode reached such exultant peaks and such bitter depths. This episode also serves as not only the climax of the entire TV show, but the pivotal platform from which the End of Evangelion movie launches into even deeper psychological terrain.

What about that which is not theory? What about what Kijishima *said* about the situation? :I

I’d be interested to know what, if anything he’s said about it. Perhaps if you linked us to said comments it would become clear, no? Anyway, I don’t see the harm in theorizing about her possible motivations, because even if Kajishima had a specific reason it obviously didn’t translate very clearly to most viewers. Plus, for all we know Kajishima might have had something in mind that was very different from what was actually shown in the episode, after all things have been known to change between writing and production in OVA 1.
