Great find Wisper! I’m really enjoying this series! They are doing an excellent job of modernizing the story while staying true to the original feel of the show. I’m loving the new characters and their interactions, and the addition of modern scientific knowledge and more realistic situations is great! No more having to wonder how the ship keeps getting repaired so fast, or why Yuki/Nova is the ONLY woman on the ship lol. I’m especially curious to see where these next episodes will go because at this point in the original the episodes get rather preposterous and random, i.e. a planet of bee people called, wait for it, planet Beeland (for real!) or discovering that Sanada’s/Sandor’s arms and legs are actually prosthetics with BOMBS in them (seriously!). I hope that they continue to clean up the story and shift the focus from the silly plots more toward the character interactions. All in all, this is a FANTASTIC treatment of the original series and I earnestly hope that they continue on to season two, cause that would be mindblowingly good!

Actually I have watched all of GXP, which serves as a good introduction to her character, but does not change the fact that she is a one dimensional character. No matter how cool a character’s back story or personality, if that character exists solely to fulfill one function (in Seto’s case to be the infallible and all-powerful behind the scenes reason for the goings on of the story), then that character is by definition one dimensional and a Mary Sue. Again, this is only my opinion, I just thought that I would clarify my position. For the record: I think Seto is a “cool” character, I think if better developed she would be an awesome addition to the universe, but just being cool isn’t enough for me in such an important character.

MUCH improved Balls! I really love the motif of Tenchi and Ryoko fading out/disappearing in front of each other! The “story” flowed greatly throughout the whole video this time and it really felt like a narrative with a beginning, middle, and end. If anything, I think the song fits the video even better now, and while the ending is still technically clips of famous Ryoko moments throughout the shows they are much more topical and give the impression that Ryoko (who was last seen lying in bed) is dreaming about getting back together with Tenchi! All in all your effort and editing really payed off! In my opinion this is a first rate AMV! I look forward to your next one, and am proud to have helped you out in this one.

I agree with Dagon’s last statement. No one here is a “hater”. Everyone who has posted so far is in agreement that on at least some level OVA 3 was flawed, the disagreements lay almost exclusively in the realm of individual preference. I cannot speak for the larger fandom, but during my time at this forum I have NEVER heard anyone bash OVA 3 simply because “it’s different,” or “it’s stupid.” The validity of their opinion is, and aught to be, always open to argument, but the people here have always arrived at them by rational rather than emotional means.

Now that I’ve said my peace about that, I think I’ll wade into the fray (rationally of course! 😆 ).

First, I fully acknowledge the validity of ANB’s point that the lack of Japanese materials is a LARGE barrier to entry for western fans, especially with respect to the “new” characters. That being said, however, I felt that the “new” characters were a drag on the show purely based on their own faults. I felt that the Seto and Noike characters were the embodiment of Mary Sues; they were perfect and right %100 of the time, purely because that was their role in the series. Airi and Tenyo were a bit better in that they provided some comic relief/entertainment, but they were really just one-trick ponies and offered little of substance to the show itself. Little girl Kagato seemed to me to be thrown in purely because Kajishima thought it was cool/wanted to make a connection with the novels, no matter how unrelated to the matter at hand.

That’s my bit about the characters, I have more to say about OVA 3, but I thought I’d try (futilely perhaps 😆 ) to get this thread back to its ORIGINAL intent. If I were to remake OVA 3 I would try and stay as close as possible to the “heart” of the original material, as that is only fair to the creator’s vision. I would start by re-working the “new” characters’ personalities to make them more deep, realistic, and relatable, i.e. give Seto and Noike some faults and conflicts, give Airi and Tenyo more than one archetypal gag. Secondly I would jettison the flashback portion of the first episode and use that space to build the main plot. Thirdly, and most importantly, I would make a big effort to explain Z’s plan, the main plot, and especially the Counter Actor. Give an adequate buildup and background as to what it is, why it’s important, and why Tenchi is able to beat it in the end. Having it explained off-screen in a doujin, even if it were made available to all fans around the world, is not good enough when dealing with a major plot point of a franchise built around its Television component. Finally, I would tone down all of the GXP references and allusions. A spin-off should be propped up by its parent show, not vice versa.

Well there it is, my rationale for OVA 3. As I said, all of this is built around individual preferences, so approve or dismiss my opinions as you judge fit.

Hey you’ve really got something there balls! Excellent song choice for sure! It fits Ryoko well, and is one of my favorites. The first half of the AMV was fantastic, it really flowed and and the “story” of Ryoko remembering everything she’s done for Tenchi as she deals with the aftermath of the infamous roof scene is very well executed. About half way in, however, it seems the story was lost as you switched to one long cut of the ending scene of universe (which also fits well to the music, but I would have liked to see more of the cool “story”!), and likewise the last segment seems to just be a collection of random Ryoko moments. I understand that there might not have been enough clips from Tokyo to keep the “story” going, but for me it was the “story” part of the AMV that really rocked!

I love the idea of a fan series that everyone can contribute to! This is a cool idea, and you are absolutely right patu, if any community can pull it off it’s :sign: ! So many projects and great ideas floating around in this section though… I don’t know if you’ve checked it out yet patu, but there’s a current project we have underway here to “re-dub” OVA3. Read about it HERE. There’s absolutely no reason why we can’t do both of these at once, but I would kinda like to see that one pick up steam before shifting gears toward this. I love this idea though, and I will gladly offer my time and talent to see it through should it progress!

I agree, nicely done! The song fits well, and the editing is very good. Maybe just a bit too long during the part where the main character (yeah I’m a noob, so what? :Cheeks: ) is powering up somewhere in the middle, but otherwise the pacing was great!
