Having read the story myself now, I am very pleased with how it came together. The interactions between Tenchi and Ryoko flow very much in the same vein as OVA episode 10 and Manatsu no Eve. You cited these as references and inspiration for the piece, which appears most, considering OVA episode 10 also has Ryoko damaging a memento of his mother’s in a similarly haphazard and self-serving way. Reading the letters from Achika to Tenchi gave an insight into her character we have never had a real chance to see in the series at large. We have only seen her active in
TMiL1, and mentioned in flashbacks, i.e. through the eyes of Tenchi, Nobuyuki, and Katsuhito. We never really get to see her as a wife and mother. Here, we see her musing over her son growing up, having financial issues with her husband, and other good times over all. It makes one wonder how Ryoko might handle these situations in Achika’s stead, if the lady pirate had considered that life for herself. I loved the story overall, as it gave a good bit of development to Achika, as well as to Tenchi and Ryoko. I empathetized with her plights, referencing parallels in my own life. However, a dread hung in my mind as I read forward. My heart feared that the later letters might start referencing her growing ill and, therefore, apart from her son. Waiting for that other foot to fall had my heart in a bit of a knot, but this never did happen. While this might be a missed opportunity, having that well-known fact rise might detract from the story’s main thrust of telling of Achika’s mostly happy life with her husband and son.
Nice work. ^^V

Here are a couple ideas I had during lunch. The first is not too unfamiliar, as it has been mentioned before.

3: witch one of the 3 do u feel could have been beter and y?
Perhaps we can have a podcast dedicated to discussing the different continuities, their similiarities and differences. This one might also be helpful to newer fans to let them know how divergent the series’ content can be. Moreover, this could serve as a historical account, showing how the series has changed over the past 20+ years.By “continuities”, I do primarily mean OVA,
Universe, and Tokyo. Time could be allotted for Hasegawa’s novels, Okuda’s manga, or GXP though they branch in different directions from OVA at some point. Naturally, Dual, Photon, and SKTall are in parallel universes as well, but are not focused on the main cast of Tenchi. One could also throw in Pretty Sammyif time allowed. The second idea arises from several Mumble and minichat conversations. Let us discuss Jurai and its portrayal in the different series. The OVA and its assorted materials have numerous details files on Jurai’s society, while
Universeand Tokyoseem a bit more scant. Also, Universeportrays Jurai in a far more sinister light than most others. In Tokyo, Jurai appears in flashbacks and history, but rarely has a direct intervention into events. This could prove an interesting conversation to analyze one of the primary entities of the Tenchimultiverse. - January 22, 2014 at 1:15 PM

Universeepisode 16, part of me thinks Katsuhito was mixing Nagi one of these. http://mybestcocktails.com/image-426-Perfect-Manhattan.jpg " /> Glancing at the recipe, this is essentially a martini with whiskey instead of gin, or Bond’s vodka. Considering Nagi’s status as a badass bounty hunter, I could see her having more affinity for dark liquors as opposed to clear. I could also see her having a normal Manhattan, which has bitters rather than dry vermouth. Still, the overall coloration and instructions seem to match Katsuhito’s in the episode.
Could a professional mixologist confirm this? ^^v

Dagon123 wrote:Well no artist who works in original cel-painted animation is lazy, overworked and underpaid? You betcha, but not lazy.
I apologize. I had not meant to insult their livelihood.
Dagon123 wrote:Universe was also on a tv budget that ran an episode every week, so they had to have these out the door quick. Hence the OVA Soja popping up in Universe, they probably took a cel from the OVA run and threw it in there quickly because in the world of animation, time literally equals money.
It’s also something to keep in mind that while the key staff for the Tenchi series often changed, more than likely the “grunt” staff did not, and Universe and OVA 2 were happening at the same time, so they were probably double overworked and just flying by the seat of their pants.
This is probably the best explanation for the inconsistencies.
Dagon123 wrote:Ordinarily I would be a stickler for this if it was a big deal in the main cast (like the Ninja Turtle voices changing from turtle to turtle per scene) but most of these errors are like the famous disappearing button in Dexter’s Lab, not really a big deal.
I had not planned on this thread to be a serious knock against the animators. Mistakes can be made in any profession, particularly when under time or budget constraints, and your reasoning is likely the best explanation for what was happening behind the scenes. Hell, there are some notorious errors in G1 Transformers that could make you raise an eyebrow or two, likely due to their production schedule and budget.
My intention was to point out a few curious glitches that might be interesting to discuss in-universe reasons for their appearance, or are just humorous to see. I apologize for not being more clear in my intent. I meant no disrespect.

Another of my favorite continuity errors appears in UniverseEpisode 22, where the knights first appear. Azaka and Kamidake are both decked out in badass Juraian combat garb, complete with those black facial marks. Now, I always was curious at how the marks on the faces of the two knights were more leaf-like than the claw-like marks you see on Tenchi, Ayeka, or Kagato, .or even NagiHowever, in this episode, there are two times the marks on Kamidake’s face vanish inexplicably. To illustrate each, I have included screen captures of before, during, and after the disappearance.
The first is when he reassures Sasami after he and Azaka decide to deal with the battleship.
http://i1345.photobucket.com/albums/p661/evilpii/Forum/kamidake-episode22-1_zps72663f77.png " /> http://i1345.photobucket.com/albums/p661/evilpii/Forum/kamidake-episode22-2_zps8b7d797e.png " /> http://i1345.photobucket.com/albums/p661/evilpii/Forum/kamidake-episode22-3_zps9140fed8.png " /> The second time is when Kamidake asks Sasami if she is alright after the knights blow the ship away.
http://i1345.photobucket.com/albums/p661/evilpii/Forum/kamidake-episode22-3_zps22bdc0b7.png " /> http://i1345.photobucket.com/albums/p661/evilpii/Forum/kamidake-episode22-4_zps83c4c64c.png " /> http://i1345.photobucket.com/albums/p661/evilpii/Forum/kamidake-episode22-6_zpsabcd04db.png " /> Now, noticeably, these both occur when Kamidake is in closeup speaking to Sasami. So, did the knight shut off his power for a second to reassure or show concern for the princess, or pose for the camera? Did lazy artists strike again? You decide!

wwwwhhhhoooo wrote:Even after merely hearing the name “Yosho” during aforementioned descriptor episodes, Ayeka and Sasami both seemed ignorant of the name or any identity associated with it (as would seem natural in
Universecontext, Yosho was all but forgotten/erased from Jurain history). You are nearly correct, Who, though Ayeka in particular states that she has heard the name “Yosho” many times in her life on Jurai. His legend as a warrior was preserved, as well as his abandonment of the throne, but much else, including Kagato’s role, was erased from Jurai’s history. Much like the knights, the broad strokes and victories were remembered, but the details were likely lost to history or politics.

wwwwhhhhoooo wrote:Before going further I have to wonder, in
Universecontext, is Yosho full-blooded Jurain and from Jurai (meaning neither he nor any of his ancestors were from Earth, as opposed to OVA) or was he somehow familiar with Earth before, say, he and Haruna left (or fled?) Jurai? Yosho’s lineage is first mentioned by Ayeka and the Juraian agent in
Universeepisode 15 while the household is on the run. He is stated to be the legitimate successor to the throne by both. http://i1345.photobucket.com/albums/p661/evilpii/Forum/agent_zps9253b042.png " /> http://i1345.photobucket.com/albums/p661/evilpii/Forum/throneroom_zpsbb0e374c.png " /> http://i1345.photobucket.com/albums/p661/evilpii/Forum/statue_zps1256ed2a.png " /> This is corroborated with the opening of episode 16, where Ayeka narrates that Yosho was an imperial son.
http://i1345.photobucket.com/albums/p661/evilpii/Forum/planet-jurai_zps65aac02f.png " /> Later in episode 22, Katsuhito himself admits to being a lineal descendent of Jurai’s royal family.
http://i1345.photobucket.com/albums/p661/evilpii/Forum/katsuhito1_zps1be95e48.png " /> http://i1345.photobucket.com/albums/p661/evilpii/Forum/katsuhito2_zpsac9796a6.png " /> Moreover, Kagato’s whole ruse is dependent on being an undeniable successor to the throne. If there was question of Yosho’s lineage, it would have interfered with Kagato’s rise to power. However, Katsuhito never says that his
entirelineage is Juraian, so the possibility of a non-Juraian ancestor is not ruled-out by dialogue. wwwwhhhhoooo wrote:My reasons for asking are that I had never given much thought to
UniverseYosho’s motivations for leaving Jurai or staying on Earth; I think I inferred the reasoning would be similar to OVA Yosho. While I very much wish to ponder this further, whether Yosho was familiar with Earth beforehand, or only after discovering it with Haruna, From the dialogue, I think Haruna might have heard about Earth before arrival, but not actually seen or visited it (see post about Haruna above). Now, the English dialogue, not the subtitles, has Haruna state that Yosho “chose” this world for them to live on. This would imply that Yosho knew of the world before them arriving there. How much he knew or if he had visited, I do not know.
blush1 wwwwhhhhoooo wrote:I think his reason for
stayingon Earth, at any rate, could be chalked up to what OVA Yosho expressed to Ayeka and company after his skirmish with Kagato: “This is my home, and this is where I wish to be buried.” In short, he had a wanderlust, and after searching aimlessly as a youth, he ended up feeling more at home on Earth than he ever had on Jurai–he fell in love with it. That seems to be exactly what Katsuhito states when he discusses it in
Universecontinuity. In episode 22, he states he decided that Earth’s beauty and people made a welcome place for him to live out his days. http://i1345.photobucket.com/albums/p661/evilpii/Forum/yosho2_zps5c5f2f7a.png " /> http://i1345.photobucket.com/albums/p661/evilpii/Forum/priests_zpscf2e6a8e.png " /> However,
