Whoever did this 1st image really retained Ryoko’s classic look with the new outfit.

I mean, it’s 2014, we can’t have those enlarged shoulder dresses for Ryoko anymore or any of the really dated outfits some of the cast wore in the OVA, like this

When I said lackluster, I more or less meant there’s less detail. This is just comparing it to the OVA though, Universe and Tokyo typically didn’t look as good as the OVA with a few exceptions

But I think there’s no doubt some episodes of Universe, OVA, etc; had higher quality art than others. This is of course due to different animators/artists taking turns on different episodes; the styles vary episode to episode. Some people don’t even realize this which surprises me, I’ve pointed this out to some very casual anime viewers and they weren’t aware.
butts1 edit: Also, an early (gonna have to wait till we see the actual show for a more fair) comparison of what I’m sort of referring to: art detail. idk, in my eyes the older Tenchi looks nicer. Not that the new one is bad.

" /> I guess we’ll have to get used to this look. Not really fond of it myself. Ryoko’s looks really deviated from what we’re used to.
Also, is it just me or does the art quality seem lackluster compared to earlier OVAs? Is this a trend in anime in general these days? I swear the animation and art were so much better years ago.
Oh man, these new character design reveals give me mixed feelings. I’m glad to see the original girls back, but Ryoko… what have they done to your hair? It just doesn’t look like Ryoko, I don’t know. It’s not bad looking, just… hard to get used to this after like 20 years of Ryoko looking the same. Her hair could be more relaxed once in a while but if it isn’t more spikey, it just isn’t Ryoko for me. But not gonna lie…
