I LOVE this idea! It’s a great “shootin’ the breeze” idea for a cast! It would definitely be a fun cast, that’s for sure. I personally would like to see this one done, but perhaps after we finish out the “main franchise” topics first. I would suggest that someone start a thread on this topic in the general Tenchi section to get the ideas flowing in anticipation of the cast, sort of like how the Manga thread provided a great deal of insight into the eventual Manga Cast. I’ll be especially interested in hearing what our fanfic authors have to contribute to this particular discussion!

P.S. For those not versed in Dual, the Dr. S that I’m quoting in the above post is Dr. Sanada from Kajishima’s Tenchi-related series Dual Parallel Trouble Adventures.

But what would you call such a mesh up?

    NEON GENESIS BLAZERS?

    STAR EVANGELION?

    SPACE BATTLESHIP EVANGELION?

    NEON GENESIS YAMATO?

Well, now that you mention it….

Personally I think this vid could have been sooooo much better, but it’s pretty good for being made 6 years ago. I’d LOVE to see someone do an EVA/Yamato mash-up vid now that there’s tons of Yamato 2199 footage to use!

I recently rewatched one of my favorite movies of all time (for about the gazillionth time): The African Queen! This movie is pretty much the definition of the word “Classic.” Seriously, this movie, and the story behind the making of it, is so good that Academy Award winning films have been made about it! I think all of this awesomeness can easily be explained by the sheer amount of talent that went into this film. Humphrey Bogart (the best actor of the age), Katherine Hepburn (the best actress of the age), and John Huston (the best director of the age) poured every ounce of their incredible talents into this film and it absolutely shows! I can’t think of a single film that has been made, before or since, that had this caliber of skill and talent behind it. Shot on location in the heart of Africa, the stories behind the filming of this movie range from hilarious to heart-poundingly intense as the crew had to deal with everything from the boat continually sinking to life-threatening bouts with malaria. All in all, The African Queen stands in my mind as the gold standard of mainstream Hollywood can accomplish with the right people at the helm.

Ok, so it’s not technically a series, but bear with me!

Perhaps the most overlooked of all the dubbed Ghibli movies, Whisper of the Heart is an incredibly well written and emotional film! As a massive fan of Ghibli/Miyazaki’s epic sci-fi/fantasy movies, I approached this movie with a little trepidation the first time I watched it, but I was absolutely blown away by the depth of the characters! The main characters, Shuzuku and Seiji, both dream of becoming artists, Shuzuku an author and Seiji a violin maker, and they eventually develop an amazing relationship that goes beyond mere friendship or romantic attraction. Their struggles to find their path in life, and their close bond really resonated with me, and I was totally absorbed into their story. I highly recommend this movie to anyone who appreciates excellent and accurate portrayals of the traumas and triumphs of young romance and dreams. The movie was directed by Yoshifumi Kondo, who was apparently being groomed to eventually replace Miyazaki as Studio Ghibli’s creative center before he tragically died shortly after the completion of this movie. I can only imagine how things might have developed differently had this young genius had the chance to develop, but I think we have truly missed out. Anyway, we still have his one and only movie, and what a movie it is! Do yourselves a favor and the next time you feel in the mood for a Ghibli marathon (as I often do!) try out Whisper of the Heart! You won’t be disappointed!

Not specifically Yamato related, but all Leiji’s females look practically identical anyways, so you can just pretend its Yuki.

    Leijigelion or… Evangeleiji?

Lol, seriously creepy! 😆 But, perhaps there’s something more there, as Anno was MAJORLY influenced by Yamato as a child. Of course Anno didn’t design Rei’s look himself, but I’m sure that he had a role in shaping how she turned out, and I wouldn’t be surprised if some small part of her was based on Matsumoto’s endless series of Yukis!

Nice find Wisper! Any combination of Two of my favorite franchises ever is usually very cool to see!

I just don’t see the appeal. Humor is one thing, but this sorta thing just strikes me as crude more than anything else. It makes me hesitate to buy something that’s marketed like this because of the position it puts me in as a buyer. I mean, what kind of image of me does buying something sold like this put out there in society? I also resent that they’ve reduced this show to nothing more than a soft-core porno in their ad campaign. I simply feel that its a misrepresentation of a show which can easily stand on its own merrits rather than as a glorified T&A show. I know that its all business and designed to boost sales, but I just kind of find it insulting to me as a consumer. I suppose I’m probably culturally indisposed to this sort of thing, growing up in a puritanical rural atmosphere and that my sensibilities are perhaps a bit too “Victorian” for the times. Anyways, pay me no heed, I’m fine with being an outlier on this matter.

EDIT: I just realized that my statement could easily be misinterpreted as very judgemental. I just want make sure that you guys know that I didn’t mean to imply that any of you are somehow pervy or crude in anyway. My statement and corncerns apply solely to myself :)

Wow. Talk about sex appeal in marketing… I don’t think they could have used more “horny anime fan” buzzwords if they tried!

And the award for most tasteless and offputting marketing campaign ever goes to……………..FUNimation! Come on up FUNI, you’ve earned this award!

Wow…. in all seriousness….just wow. Seriously makes me NOT want to buy this set now. I still will (probably), but you can be damn sure I will have some choice words to put down on their product survey form.

Who just gave me a great idea in minichat: Reviews of the FUNi box set releases!

I’m sure that there are plenty of Tenchi fans out there who might be on the fence about buying the sets, maybe they’re curious about the quality or features or something. I think we could easily honestly and helpfully review the box sets and do a service to the larger fandom! Clearly, this wouldnt be best suited for the typical Tenchicast! format, maybe a more informal and shorter video in which one of us goes through pros and cons of the sets and renders a score out of ten or something. Just a thought, but I think something like this would be really easy to do and shouldn’t interrupt our normal podcast schedule at all. If this idea is worth doing I would gladly volunteer myself to perform or produce the reviews, seeing as I have most of the releases minus WoG and TiT, of course I know others like Who have some sets as well and would also be well suited for the job. What do you guys think?
