From the illustration I wonder if I ought to add it to my wants list.It looks like it could’ve been the

Pretty sharp ML. It is indeed considered a, if not THE, major inspiration for Revolutionary Girl Utena.

    From Wikipedia:

    Quote:

Riyoko Ikeda’s The Rose of Versailles has often been quoted as an established source of inspiration for the visual style of Utena,[3] scenes involving sliding mirrors and unsupported staircases appear during character introspections in The Rose of Versailles while in Utena very similar scenes are part of the surreal landscape. Although director Ikuhara has denied this on several occasions, including the director’s commentary on the final DVD Finale of the American release. Nevertheless, similarities between the protagonists of The Rose of Versailles and Utena have been drawn by fans and reviewers alike, with Utena and Anthy often compared and contrasted with Oscar François de Jarjayes and Marie Antoinette due to their protector/princess relationship.

I will say though, I’ve never seen it myself, but I’ve heard that it is very low on the actual “animation” department, so don’t go into it expecting Dragonball Z, lol

Well, I just watched the first ep. on Nozomi Entertainment’s YT channel, and I definitely can see what you mean Dagon. Some of the movement can be quite stiff, and the cel count per episode is way below other shows from that era, i.e. the first Yamato season from ’74 is more fluid than this show from ’79. All that being said, however, I REALLY enjoyed the episode. The characters were extremely compelling and three dimensional, and the story was engaging. I also really like the character designs and art style for this show. It has all the trademark features of “anime” animation, but it also really captures the French Aristocratic feel of the setting. And I just LOVE Oscar! She’s the perfect combination of beauty and badassery!

I’m definitely going to eventually watch the rest of this show someday soon!

It’s here! Behold the trailer for Yamato 2199 chapter 5! It looks like the show is forging a lot of new ground in terms of changes to the original plot, but I do believe we may see the epic showdown between Yamato and General Dommel/Lysis! The ammount of badass and shit hitting the fan in this trailer is mind blowing! Female crew members in combat mechs, a NEW Iscandarian(?), and what looks suspiciosly like a mutinty! And then there’s that last scene…. ugh *nerdgasms* Now if only someone would get around to uploading chapter 4 I might really have the best week ever!

EDIT: Can’t seem to get the damn video to embed properly! The link should work though. Any Mod or Admin help here would also be appreciated :D

Well, I’ve only been really back into anime at large for a little over a year, so I can’t claim to have a “ritual re-watch” anime or anything, but since I got into Star Blazers/Space Battleship Yamato years before I got back into general anime, and I still give it a re-watch at least once a year it would have to be that. Other than that, I’d definitely say Tenchi (all continuities), as I’ve re-watched it several times since I got back into it, and still find it exceedingly enjoyable. As time goes on I’m sure that I’ll find myself re-watching more series, but as it stands now I’m still trying to erase my anime n00b status by watching lots of shows for the first time.

If you all don’t mind, I think I’ll change the direction a bit. I’m just right now watching one of my favorite films: The Shawshank Redemption. It’s a fantastic movie about psychological torture/inspiration in the face of hardship. It’s pretty much the pinnacle of the “prison movie” genre, but for me it opens up a whole new field of movies involving captivity as a theme. Especially compelling is the captivity to destiny, such as in Lawrence of Arabia or Gandhi. Both Lawrence and Gandhi were people who found themselves, sometimes against their will, captive to their own destinies for greatness, and both made for some of the best movies of all time!

Just a note: Golden Boy is no classic and it’s rated mature so it’s against the rules of this thread.

I can find no such rule (or any rule for that matter) for this thread. As a matter of fact, the very first recommendation made by the OP of this thread (not counting the one recovered from a previous board) is High School of the Dead, which is also rated TV MA. No rules of the forum as a whole have been broken either, as neither the recommendation itself nor the short video Nobuyuki posted were pornographic. If you don’t agree with a recommendation made in this thread you are free to make an argument against it (preferably one more substantial than it’s “no classic”), but double check before you accuse someone of breaking the rules.

Fifteen year old Kenshi Masaki was taken from his home planet, transported to a galaxy far, far away, and captured by a gorgeous princess! This royal beauty quickly claims Kenshi as her personal servant – and lends him out to all the lecherous ladies at her prestigious boarding school. On the rare occasion Kenshi doesn’t have his hands full with a curvaceous coed, he can be found training for the intergalactic mecha battle royale looming on the horizon. Helping the princess save her planet is Kenshi’s ticket home, but losing means he’ll be stuck scrubbing backs in the interstellar sauna for the rest of his life! Every boy should be so lucky.

Wow. Talk about sex appeal in marketing… I don’t think they could have used more “horny anime fan” buzzwords if they tried! There’s missing the point, and then there’s this…
