I wonder,if Anime were German instead of Japanese for instance, would this same show be named for the

    Bismark?

Somehow Space Battleship Bismark doesn’t have the same ring to it as Space Battleship Yamato even though the same overall pride.

Does this answer your question MitsukiLover? :Cheeks:

I love Glory (no great surprise there, coming from a history buff! 😆 ), and I’m very glad that you brought up James Horner! I am a massive fan of his work, and you are correct in saying that his score is largely responsible for the emotional impact of that movie. After John Williams, Horner is probably the greatest movie composer of all time, and it is especially his work in Science Fiction movies that strikes me as the most compelling, as it is in this field that he exceeds even Williams’ bona fides. His work in that field includes such masterworks as the scores of Star Trek II & III, Aliens, and Avatar, but nothing will ever compare in my mind with the unmitigated awesomeness that is:

And there you have my nerd gush for the evening! Stay tuned for a possible John Williams one later, lol!

FWIW Department:The original aircraft carrier Yamato was sunk on April 7,1945.It took over 300

American aircraft to finally sink her,and in the process the American fleet lost needed air cover

enabling several kamikaze strikes on American vessels. So we can see why the Japanese would be proud of the name of Yamato.

Ok. First off. Aircraft Carrier?! It was a Battleship. The largest, most heavily armed, and most most heavily armored of all time. Not an Aircraft Carrier. It did possess two catapults for launching small personal transport planes, but as it could not receive planes it is not an Aircraft Carrier. It was a Battleship.

Secondly, while they certainly have reason to be proud of the ship, the name “Yamato” is actually an archaic word for “Japan.” So the real pride is in the connotation of the glorious past of Japan, hence why only their best ship was worthy of the name.

Other than that, however you aren’t wrong about the circumstances of her sinking, although it’s more complex than you present it. It did indeed take over 300 planes to take her down, but more than that it required THREE SEPARATE ATTACKS over the course of 2 hours to finally send her to the bottom. Since this is an anime fan thread, I’ll let the anime do the explaining. (they take some liberties of course)

    Seriously, Aircraft Carrier???!!!

I’ve recently stumbled across a hilarious abridgement of the first Evangelion Rebuild movie called EvAbridged. It’s an ongoing project, with the second video only coming out last week, but it’s of the absolute highest quality editing and voice acting.

Space Battleship Yamato, and Star Blazers, while ostensibly the same show, have MANY differences between them. The Japanese version is better in many respects, but there are more than a few areas in which the English dub has it beat, and one of them is without a doubt its presentation. The openings of the two shows could not be more different, with the Japanese version composed of mainly establishing shots, and the English version filled with action packed sequences!

    [BBvideo 425,350]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eMcrep48Wz0[/BBvideo]English Version

Now, perhaps you’re thinking that this is due mainly to the fact that the Japanese opening was made in 1974 on a shoestring budget, while the English version was made in 1979, and you may be right, but then we get to season two.

[BBvideo 425,350]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IOW8uJxLlUQ[/BBvideo]English Version (only watch to 1:14)

Even when Yamato was at its height of popularity (and budget) in Japan they delivered a pretty boring intro, whereas the English opening couldn’t be more exciting if it tried! Now, some of this may simply have to to with cultural differences or some form of regulatory limitation, but the fact remains that from a relatively objective standpoint Star Blazers has got Yamato beat when it comes to presentation in the opening.

Not really new information, but I thought you guys might want to hear the band that will be performing the new series’ theme song. I do NOT know if this is the actual new song (I suspect not).

Well, I’ve ordered the Deluxe Viz boxset of the complete Naussicaa of the Valley of the Wind manga series by none other than Hayou Miyazaki! The movie is without a doubt one of the (if not THE) greatest animations of all time, and I am really looking forward to reading the series!

Actually, I always wondered why the entire light novel series wasn’t made into a TV series. It would have been cheaper than movies.

Yeah that certainly would have been a more economical approach. Maybe it was Hasegawa’s preference to only animate one novel, or perhaps they had plans in the works, but the movie didn’t perform well enough or something. Or maybe the other novels simply weren’t as good as this one was. I mean, aside from the barest of descriptions we really don’t know what’s in the novels or how they read, and perhaps they just weren’t deemed good enough. I would have loved to see Hasegawa’s introduction of Kiyone Makibi, however, just to finally learn something of her backstory.

Anyway, as for this movie itself, I too was never angered or enraged by the slapping scene. I was certainly shocked by it, as it’s a much more forceful and sudden action than we’ve seen in Tenchi’s character so far, but on the whole I thought it was used remarkably well to reveal depths of their characters and eventually bring them closer for it.
