After the fun times of last week, we are brought again to the feudal timeline, where “Universe” Ryoko and Mihoshi finally have their brawl. That in and of itself made this a fun episode to watch. soawesome1 Just when Ryoko seems to have the upper hand, the rift opens and drags the two of them out of this existence.

My running theory here is still that these two are alternate versions of the Ryoko and Mihoshi from the Universe continuity. Imagine, if you will, the rift taking the two of them out of “Universe Beta” (as opposed to “Universe Prime”, the actual continuity) before Ryo-Ohki crashes on Earth in Universe episode 1, perhaps crashing them both on this feudal Earth. Neither would know Tenchi, Ryoko would be ruthless, Mihoshi would still be bumbling. However, she seems far more competent here than she did in Universe. blush1 That too sets her apart from her “Universe Prime” counterpart.

Nil could be right about Washu pulling these two out and putting them back where they belong, though it could still be possible that the rift remains unstable. In which case, “Universe Beta” Ryoko and Mihoshi just got tossed into another variant reality. wth2 Then again, Washu might do that for giggles too. qt1

To the device in Momo’s hands, I do not think that it is Tenchiken, or at least not the one we all know. Notice that the guard is pink, rather than violet as in every other continuity, as well as its recent appearances in episodes 9 and 11-13. However, is it a variant of Tenchiken, just as Ryoko and Mihoshi were? I think it might be. gendo1

I had a thought between viewings of this episode. What if Momo is an alternate version of Tenchi, or perhaps Ayeka, or both? Say she was supposed to be given away for some political reason, but ran with her loyal guard (Beni) at her side?

This is all speculation at this point, but who knows? Tenchismile It is curious that Tenchi does not notice the device in Momo’s hands. I thought for a moment that perhaps he lent her Tenchiken just to give her a “security blanket” of sorts. However, the coloration and how she talks about it (i.e. “it’s supposed to let us see very far”) seems to the contrary, as well as common sense. Why lend a child a potential weapon, particularly if she is known to have some kind of power? wtfisthis1

As far as the crater and Beni are concerned, they seem both self-explanatory, at least until the next feudal era episode. gendo1

Today’s episode ties up the week, skimming through what has happened on campus. Momo does allude to losing herself in the storage building too and being rescued by Hana and the others. Presumably, they used the map Hachiko lost to do so. blush1 She also mentions that Hachiko’s bokuto is the “Herald of Swords”, so one wonders if she might get an actual sword by the end of all this. After all, Momo does have a sword, shown last week while rescuing Tenchi from the Club, but it has not yet been seen out of its sheath. Where did she even get that anyway? qt1

This week has been a fun one. Let us see what next week will bring. Likely, the festival will happen, and maybe have Ayeka or Sasami sneaking around as well. Tenchismile

Today’s episode has Tenchi come home from work and is welcomed by the usual insanity of the Masaki household. Ayeka and Sasami greet him at the door, while Ryoko has a… special surprise for him. wth2

Tenchi downplays his adventure in the storage building, but Sasami has apparently had an adventure of her own. While he was battling a giant robot, Washu gave Sasami a school uniform and let her sneak into the school. People thought she was an idol, perhaps for multiple reasons. And then, she… wait. Wait a minute. WANT1 Sasami, is that…? soawesome1 I cannot say I caused this, but I will take all the blame I can. fyeah1 Thank you, based Negishi. gendo1

Also, Ayeka is dressed up for the school festival as well. Are we going to have Ayeka on campus next week? iloveit1

Elsewhere, Ryoko has been hunting, and cooking, and the ingredients are still alive! woooo1 She says it is supposed to be edible, but I do not trust it. wtfisthis1 … Uh, Ryoko. What’s with that evil sparkle in your eyes? wth2 Oh. My. God. sadface1

If you cannot tell, I enjoyed this episode a lot. It was a nice romp after a long day at the office. What craziness awaits us next week? Tune in next time! Tenchismile

Yet, I do not think we will have a conclusion to this scene tomorrow. Considering the pattern of episodes of the last two weeks, I have a bet that tomorrow’s episode will return to the feudal scenario with “Universe” Ryoko and Mihoshi. We might see Tenchiken pop out there too, but we will have to tune in to see. Tenchismile

… I should have known this show would make me a liar at least once. blush1 Still, today’s episode was awesome. kiyonesmile1 The conclusion to the battle with the robot is shown, and Tenchi gets to show why he is the namesake of the show. butts1 While Hachiko and Beni both have been seen to be formidable combatants, a bokuto or a mace just does not compare with a light-sword. badass1

This episode also confirms that Hachiko has some issue with having a weapon in her hands. She is obviously aware of this problem, and embarrassed by it. Perhaps it might be explained later? qt1

As to Tenchi being a badass, that just felt good. soawesome1 It has been a while since we saw young Mr. Masaki last wielding his beam sword in combat against Kain (TM!iL1, 1996). He gave the robot a heaping helping of NOPE with just about every attack, and won the day, protecting both of his students. mmhmm1

Also, the episode finishes the joke/allusion started in episode 9. In episode 9, Beni swung her fist at Tenchi, and he caught it in mid-air. Likewise, he brought the pain in episode 13. After the battle is won, Beni punches him and knocks him for a loop, surprising her. I believe this is a throwback to Katsuhito catching Ryoko’s punch in OVA series 1 episode 3, and Ryoko destroying the stairs with a punch, confused as to how the old priest could halt her force. Evidently, Tenchi is not all-powerful. blush1

Meanwhile, Yuki and Rui made off with boxes of stuff, and we get to see that creepy spider again. woooo1 What did they get and how will it affect future events? Tune in tomorrow. Tenchismile

Today’s episode continued the craziness from yesterday, following Tenchi with Beni and Hachiko. Our dear student teacher orders his two students to play nice while they escape. However, en route, they accidentally awaken an old robot, put into storage for being too dangerous. Action ensues. fyeah1

I am enjoying the action ride the show has given the last two episodes, and I expect this week’s supercut will reflect that come Friday. Tenchismile While Beni and Hachiko did not renew their aggressions today, the undercurrent was still there, not unlike Universe episodes 20 and 24 between Ryoko and Nagi. One wonders if this little incident will seed a grudging respect between the two rival students by the end of the week. qt1 Even then, they might hash out their differences in a duel, which I would not mind either. butts1

Considering Beni’s “flashback”, there are a couple items to notice. First, Momo is dressed in her space/feudal era clothes, but Hachiko is in her present day costume. Moreover, Beni’s arm is shown when she reaches for Momo, showing her blouse’s sleeve rolled up, i.e. her school uniform. Also, Beni asks if Momo is crying because she is gone. Then, Hachiko intervenes, ordering Beni to leave. In the space scenes from episodes 3 and 8, Beni seems to be Momo’s caretaker and protector, but in the school era, Hachiko has obviously claimed that role. Yet, part of Beni seems to miss Momo and still cares about her.

This makes me wonder. Could the Council members (Hachiko, Hana, Tori) be some sort of defence mechanism for Momo? Note that in episode 8, the feudal incarnation of this trio appeared and confronted Tenchi. If Momo is some sort of dimensional singularity, existing in all of them and perhaps controlling them, might they her inner circle and protectors, maybe fragments of her consciousness? This would be a throwback to Hotsuma, Tsuguru, and Matori from Tokyo, Yugi’s protectors. Admittedly, Momo has displayed some power against “Universe Ryoko” in episode 8, so she clearly is not an ordinary child/teenager. Naturally, this theory does not explain Yuki or Rui, or Beni yet.

The episode is also interesting to compare Beni and Hachiko, the main muscle of the Club and Council, respectively. Beni is vehemently independent, not accepting Tenchi’s hand up, and quite spry to slam her mace through an obstacle. Did she not injure her leg not long ago? tenchiahhhhhh Hachiko, on the other hand, is cool and calculating for the most part, very proud, likely a reference to samurai culture given her bokuto and “hakama” dress. She is very respectful to Tenchi and yields to his edicts fairly quickly. Admittedly, my perception of her might be a bit biased after just watching 47 Ronin. blush1

The robot was a surprise, though considering the Area 51 storage building, I probably should not be. blush1 The design is reminiscent of classic super robots like Tetsujin 28 and Giant Robo, particularly with the two tank-like structures on its back and the rounded shoulder armor. The “rocket punch” definitely harkens back to Mazinger Z and the like. Its HUD might also be a nod to The Terminator. soawesome1 Too bad it’s gonna get broke soon. dawohki1

Now, why did Hachiko collapse in tears at losing her bokuto? Currently, that seems very random and hopefully will be elaborated upon in short order.

However, with Beni knocked aside and Hachiko apparently broken down, what will you do, Mr. Masaki? gendo1 I see that sword in your back pocket. I doubt it’s there for decoration. Where’s that can of whoopass you’ve owed me since Universe?

Yet, I do not think we will have a conclusion to this scene tomorrow. Today’s episode had some wild antics: Tenchi and Hachiko wandering around the storage building, the Club following unluckily behind. However, the episode has a notable Indiana Jones vibe about it. fyeah1 We have a climbing rope, hidden passages, collapsing corridors, a spherical boulder, and a huge storehouse of relics. Who thinks they might find the Ark of the Covenant in there? qt1 In particular, the final shot of the episode looks remarkably like the final shot of Raiders of the Lost Ark.

I laughed at the elaborate incantation, as well as the creepy spider. woooo1 This episode was just a fun romp of hijinks, not unlike Universe episode 4, where Ryoko steals Tenchi away to the cave near the Masaki shrine and encounters wacky traps along the way. kiyonesmile1 Another shoutout to Universe? Tenchismile

Where will they go from here? They’ve gained a Beni and lost a map. Tenchi still has his sword, safely stashed in his back pocket, as well as whatever artifact they were set to retrieve. What even is that? gendo1

Having decided to reconnect with her old friends, Ryoko set out to meet with Kiyone and Mihoshi at a little lounge named Land’s End. Washu has made most of the arrangements, and Ryo-Ohki is plenty ready to race through the stars again.

The opening dialogue between Ryoko, Washu, and Ryo-Ohki was a nostalgic breath, hearing Ryoko and Washu bicker like a daughter and mother again. The former pirate even overtly asked Washu if she was playing at being her mother. Ryo-Ohki, naturally, was more interested in her carrots and getting into the stars again.

Yet, the highlight of this chapter was the meeting with Kiyone and Mihoshi. I enjoyed seeing the comedy between the duo had not skipped a beat in ten years. However, the point here seems primarily to have the two reflect on their time on Earth, particularly the career-driven Kiyone. While she might be embarrassed by her gray hairs, they seem to have given her some wisdom as she evaluated the motivations of her younger self: promotion, prestige, and the like. Notably, she mentions her return to Earth at the end of Universe and how she had seen the importance of the family dynamic at the Masaki house. Ryoko also challenges her with the question whether or not Tenchi’s marriage caused them to leave. As one might expect, Kiyone was not shooed away by that fact. She just grew away over time and went back to her career. I thought it quite mature of both Kiyone and Ryoko to discuss the topic openly. Certainly, it was a change from their usual chats of times past.

Of course, Mihoshi answered the same questions, revealing some of her own fate after TMiL2. In doing so, she alluded to Kiyone’s own romantic woes, which endeared them both. One does hold out hope that Kiyone will find her own lover in time. As a professional myself, I can appreciate Kiyone’s concerns and apprehension, particularly given the dangerous nature of her occupation. Perhaps seeing Mihoshi with her beau and feeling Ryoko’s teasing prods, Kiyone might take a chance.

I really enjoyed this chapter. The descriptions brought the lounge to life and showed the progression of Kiyone and Mihoshi quite well. It was bittersweet seeing Kiyone’s job having a physical effect on her, though it would be expected. In Universe, she and Mihoshi are usually placed at 22-years-old, so 10+ years could easily put both into their mid- to late-30s. The occasional gray hair is not unusual, as I have discovered firsthand. I did like Kiyone’s overcoat/trenchcoat. The imagery with the location gave the scene a very noir feel, which I could appreciate for Kiyone’s current cases. The juxtaposition of Kiyone’s more mature and noir atmosphere to Mihoshi’s colorful and bubbly bumbling was another delight.

The ending was also bittersweet. Ryoko seemed to have one last matter to relate when they parted company so affectionately, but she relented. I wonder what she had to say, and I do worry a bit. In my reaction to the first chapter, I had mentioned that Ryoko might want to speak to Tenchi about her departure, and this second chapter does mention that she said her goodbyes before leaving on her journey. When Kiyone asked her about home, she hesitated before starting to answer, only to have Mihoshi interrupt before anything could be said. Concerning his brief mention, I start thinking.

Is there trouble in paradise? Might Tenchi and Ryoko be at a rocky point in their relationship? While I doubt Ryoko loves Tenchi any less, perhaps the daily strain of marriage is having a toll on one or both of them. I cannot speak to Tenchi as yet.

Or, worse yet, Tenchi maybe critically ill or dying. It had been implied and theorized that like Achika, Tenchi could die young after Haruna siphoned off his Jurai energy to create her pocket universe. Might that be happening or already happened, leaving Ryoko alone in the Masaki home? Might she have been saying goodbye to a grave marker or a ghost? With Halloween shortly coming, I could see a creepy or melancholic ending to all this.

Either of these might explain why Ryoko is hesitant to talk about home and is more insistent to hear about the others.

Naturally, this is all just my worrying speculation. I could be way off the mark.

Thanks again for this glimpse into the future. Keep up the good work. kiyonesmile1

Now that I have some time away from work, and being unconscious, I can write my thoughts on episodes 9 and 10. blush1 Episode 9 brings Tenchi back to, presumably, his second day at work while episode 10 is Momo’s weekly recap. As such, I will focus on episode 9 primarily. Tenchismile

What was not fine by me was how far they went with using Tenchi-ken for a lewd sexual joke. It was completely unnecessary, and had I not already been on board with Ai by this point for a number of reasons it would’ve been a deal breaker for me. I didn’t like it when Kajishima basically did the same thing in a hentai setting (caveat: explicitly, in his case), but at least in that instance he kept that level of vulgarity separate from an actual Tenchi series. 😡

It’s not even the “vulgarity” that bugs me, and even then that’s a matter of personal preference (in fact, I quite enjoyed the various “naughty” bits of the OVA, especially during “The Night Before The Carnival”). But in this case, in a “celebration of the franchise” for long-time fans, the fact that they used what by this point is an icon of the series at large for a quick dildo joke is tantamount to sacrilege.

    chucklocker wrote:

In all seriousness though, I actually thought the gag with the Tenchi-ken was really funny, and refreshingly done. Let’s face it, this isn’t the first time the connection has been made, not by a long shot. Probably since its very first appearance fans have snickered at the unintentional (or maybe not so unintentional…) phallic imagery associated with the Tenchi-ken. I thought the way that Ukan teased Tenchi by implying that it was something he was into was a refreshing and novel iteration of the gag. It seemed, to me at least, that Negishi was giving a wink and a nod to a fan in-joke that’s as old as the fandom itself, and he did so with more subtlety and craft than certain other Tenchi creators have in the past… Reasonable minds can certainly differ though, and I certainly wont hold it against anyone for finding something like this to be against their taste.

Admittedly, the insinuation with Tenchiken did surprise me, but it was more subtly stated than I expect it would be with another writer. The entire exchange between Tenchi and Ukan is 30 seconds long, about the length of the panty shot from episode 1. Most of the scene was dialogue, primarily Ukan teasing Tenchi. Admittedly, I think this scene serves a couple purposes. First, Ukan is a sultry woman, even from her first moments in the show. She teases Tenchi and seems to put him in compromising positions. Whether or not these are serious overtures or not remains to be seen, but the scene serves to show more of her character, tasteful or not. Second, Chuck is right that the Tenchiken was a phallic metaphor in the OVA: a sword with two gems that a certain woman (Ryoko) could not touch. While the point has not been overtly stated in the anime until now, it has been subtext since the beginning.

Moreover, the point of the scene is likely to bring attention to the fact that Tenchiken is in this anime, the first time since Katsuhito used it to end Haruna in TMiL2 (1999). Also, notice that it is the Universe continuity design for the key. That means a bud-like pommel with no gems. Evidently, his first day’s experience showed Tenchi that he should be armed. The “talisman” excuse was inventive, but naturally backfired. However, in that backfiring, notice that Ukan can hold the key. The OVA continuity made it clear that only certain people could wield or even hold the key. Notably, Ryoko always was shocked or knocked back when she came into contact with it. While the Universe continuity only had Jurai royal family hold the key (Katsuhito in Universe episode 23 and TMiL2, Tenchi in Universe episodes 23-26 and TMiL1, Achika in TMiL1, Ayeka at the end of TMiL1), one might expect a similar defensive mechanism. So, I will ask the obvious question. Why can Ukan hold Tenchiken?

The little exchange between Beni and Hachiko felt good, showing more action and conflict between the Council and Club (yes, I pun, dammit). badass1 But, Tenchi also showed that he is a boss by catching Beni’s fist in mid-swing. That’s “Tenchi-sensei” to you, dear student. fyeah1 I second Wwwwhhhhoooo’s implication that Tenchi is holding back, probably for the sake of simplicity and camouflage in his mission, but not so much that he is into BSDM. That’s Ayeka’s domain. Right, princess? tuxedodouche I was amused at Yuki and Rui grovelling at Tenchi’s feet. Keep in mind that Tenchi is a teacher now. He does have authority, however little a student teacher has. blush1 Naturally, Ukan has more authority, being permanent faculty, as demonstrated by her halting Beni and Hachiko’s renewed aggressions. Still, I enjoyed seeing that Tenchi is not merely complacent after his first day. He can take action when necessary, such as stopping Beni and Hachiko the first time and bringing them to the Council for judgment.

Now, the student politics are interesting. Apparently, the Club could take over the school if they wanted. I second Nil’s question as to why they have not already done so. Moreover, what is this treasure Rui nearly divulged to the Council? The earlier theory that it was Tenchiken is now shot to hell, which reopens the discussion on what it could be. My bet is still on it being Momo and Beni’s ship, but we will have to see. gendo1

Thanks again to the translation crew! You have given us another week of new Tenchi to enjoy and piece together. Keep up the good work! kiyonesmile1
