- in reply to: OVA3 / GXP
I have since rewatched the entirety of GXP, which spurred some more questions regarding this continuity. Below are some lists of my thoughts and issues on the matter. SeinaA significant point is made early in the series that Seina’s enlistment into the GP should have been forbidden. (ep 3) Admittedly, Seto waves this off, supposedly by means of her authority and association with Mikami and Airi. However, his status is flaunted by Elma (ep 5). Moreover, Seiryo harps on Terrans the whole time. If Seina’s origin is so taboo, why do they throw it in people’s faces?
- Who would condone three female instructors living with a male student? (ep 7) That seems questionable and unprofessional.
- Seina is meant to be in the Galaxy Police Academy, but he is only shown on the track with Seiryo (ep 6) and in a classroom once (ep 25). Given all his gallanting around space, when did he have time to learn the sword (ep 22) or how to command a starship (ep 10)?
- During Seina’s first training voyage, the students are unfocused with minimal supervision, just stamping packages. (ep 9) Would the students not have faculty overseeing them and instructing them in their duties?
- When the training voyage is attacked, the combat is very tame. (ep 9) Would body enhancement not make the combat high-speed and far more violent, particularly with students who have not fully learned control, technique, or strategy?
- Seina freezes after being attacked by Tarant and saved by Kiriko. (ep 10) He even has flashbacks in the next couple episodes. Would he not be better served by having counselling? Why is he given his own command when he has been shown not to be able to react well in combat?
- Moreover, why does Seina get Washu’s latest battleship when he just lost a GP battleship? (ep 13)
- While Seina is not exactly combat savvy, why is he not allowed to return fire in the first sortie with Fuku? (ep 14)
- Kiriko and Airi have been squirrelling away Seina’s money and sending it to his family. (ep 16) How is that allowed, to manage a student’s private funds?
- Seina evidently has met all the Masaki household except for Washu. (ep 17) Has he not ever wondered about who they are and from where they originate?
- How is Seina able to communicate with the tree Funaho (ep 17) and the Zinv mecha (ep 24)? Both are first-generation royal trees, but he is a full-blood Terran as stated in the early episodes.
- When facing Seiryo, Seina spends his days just lounging. (ep 22) Why does he not get psyched mentally and prepare? While Kanemitsu is correct in calming the mind before battle, Seina has never been shown in a duel or martial contest before. Likewise, why is no one else planning to help him? They all know he will be heavily outmatched, but are waved off as “getting in his way”. They are his teachers. Would this not be a good time for them to teach him strategy or weaknesses?
- How do the four girls change his bad luck into good luck? (ep 25) Notably, Seina is not being hurt as often, but the reasoning for this is ignored. The comparison of Seina to Neige’s powers hinted that this could be some sort of control of the collective consciousness (ep 14), but the reasoning is not made clear.
- Why is Seina third in line to the throne of Jurai? (ep 25) He did bond with a first-generation tree (Zinv mecha), but how does this make him Juraian royalty? He has no lineage or social status to put him in line to the throne.
- Why is Seina’s family on the Mikagami? (ep 25) Again, he, and they, are full-blooded Terran, and removing them from their homeworld is forbidden. While an exception was made for Seina to acquire a new tool to capture pirates, why are they allowed? Yes, they are his family, but is that reason enough to break this law? Also, it would be cruel to wipe their memories of their son’s wedding if that is the work-around.
- Why does Seina need to marry nine females? (ep 26) Admittedly, Kiriko and Amane have been after him for some time, so they make sense. Ryoko Balouta has had romantic interest in him as well. However, Neige is a child, in body if not in mind. Fuku has been regarded as an infant at best, but Airi says she is a wife as well. Then, there are also the four adjutants from the Renza Federation, who want to use Seina for their own purposes. This seems cluttered.
Continuity (Overall)In OVA series 1, Earth is regarded as remote and isolated, hence why Yosho and Ayeka were stranded. However, the GP cargo ship (ep 2) and Mikagami (ep 3) can contact Earth without problem. While only two years have passed since Ryoko was released, Kiriko already has a career with the GP and visits her family on Earth. (ep 4) This seems a contradiction in one of a following ways: the development of Earth, the isolation of Earth, or how ingrained the Masaki family is on Earth.
- At the GP Academy, there is a landmark known as Washu’s Pore. (ep 7) What did she do there? Is this the crater left by the attacking Masu mentioned in OVA series 2 episode 3?
- If the Masaki household is such a secret, why is Kiriko talking so openly about them? (ep 12)
- What errand did Washu give to Ryo-Ohki? (ep 12) Presumably, this could be delivering some final component of Fuku, but this is not stated.
- Washu constructed Fuku, a new battleship given to Seina for his use in the GP. (ep 13) This seems a violation of her agreement with Funaho in OVA series 2 episode 6. However, she also gave the ship the mentality of an infant, which is not very useful for a weapon. (ep 15) Considering the later hijack and acquisition of Fuku by Tarant and the Galaxy Army (ep 23), did Washu believe this was a good course of action?
- Mashisu and the
Chobimaruappear to save Fuku alongside Ryo-Ohki. (ep 15) Likewise, Misao appears to arrest Seina’s crew. (ep 23) Shouldn’t they be occupied while he completes his punishment, the Kuramitsu rite? Mikami stated in the +1 special that the rite is 10 years in duration. Since GXP episode 1 and OVA series 3 episode 5 happen almost concurrently, ten years have not elapsed yet. - Mihoshi supposedly is always in space. (ep 17) However, OVA series 2 and 3 shows her laying around the Masaki house sleeping most of the time.
- Yosho reveals his young face to Seina, in full view of Ryoko and Ayeka. (ep 17) Since they did not react to this revelation, when did they first discover this? OVA series 3 has Yosho reveal himself to Tenchi, but instruct him not to tell the others.
- Ryu-Oh is still regarded as a royal ship. (ep 17) Seto does explain that the core unit of a Jurai ship contains all of the vessel’s power, and the external hull is some form of limiter. (ep 21) Also, Mizuki is shown flying through space without an exterior hull. (ep 24) If that is so, why couldn’t Ayeka have flown Ryu-Oh’s core in OVA series 1 episodes 3-5? She blew the exterior hull, apparently making the ship more powerful. While the hole in the unit from Ryo-Ohki’s spine might be a problem, Night Before the Carnival gives Ryu-Oh a new unit. Considering how small Mizuki is when she flew, couldn’t Ryu-Oh be flightworthy again in OVA series 2, before the emperor arrives? Couldn’t Ryu-Oh be used to battle Shunga alongside Ryo-Ohki?
- Why does Amane know so many secrets about the Masaki household? (ep 17) Is Mihoshi that much of a gossip?
- Why is Ryoko flirting with Seina in front of Tenchi? (ep 17) She has been portrayed as being wholeheartedly in love with Tenchi. Why would she act this way?
- Fuku links with Mikagami and uses her Light Hawk Wings. (ep 20) Moreover, Fuku is merged with Mizuki to create an even more powerful battleship. (ep 21) Seto alludes to Yosho telling her about this. (ep 20) Is this referencing when Ryo-Ohki used Ryu-Oh’s core unit against Kagato? If Fuku and Mizuki were so powerful, why not permanently connect Ryo-Ohki and Ryu-Oh? This should not interfere with Ryo-Ohki’s humanoid form since she is known to have multiple bodies active simultaneously.
- Anyone can enter a royal ship if the tree gives permission. (ep 21) Since Mizuki has the mentality of a child, doesn’t this put state secrets in the hands of a very irresponsible entity?
- Also, Mizuki is shown to have the ability to speak. (ep 21) Is this unique to her, since the other trees (Funaho, Ryu-Oh, etc.) have not been shown to have this ability?
- The Zinv mecha merges with Fuku, forms Light Hawk Wings, pulls the
Daidalosout of subspace, and uses matter compression? (ep 24) Since the Zinv has a first-generation tree bud, the Light Hawk Wings and ability to merge with Fuku are preceded by Ryo-Ohki and Ryu-Oh in OVA series 1. However, how does it accomplish the subspace event and matter compression? - The Galaxy Army mentions that it has encountered higher-dimensional life. (ep 24) When? Have they encountered Tsunami or Tokimi in some previous incident?
Continuity (GXP only)Amane left an item in a bag for Seina to give to Tenchi. (ep 1) He leaves it with a note, but what is in the bag? Does anyone have a translation of the note?
- What is the cargo of the GP transport? (ep 2)
- Ryoko Balouta says she is willing to make Seina her superior. (ep 3) Is this honest, or just a ploy?
- Why did Amane get a light sentence (teaching) for her screw up? (ep 4)
- What is Tarant’s “guardian”? (ep 10) He never uses it again, and no one else has a similar weapon.
- Why can Ryoko Balouta shapeshift? (ep 11) Is this a racial trait? Does King Balouta have the same ability?
- Neige can manipulate the collective consciousness of others around her, to the point of mind control. (ep 14) Why does she threaten the girls not to reveal this to Seina, considering she never uses this power again?
- Fuku seemed fine in combat and the crew understanding of her. (ep 14) However, they then ignore her and regard her as a machine days later. (ep 15) What happened?
- Seto brought Neige to Earth, violating the Melmas laws against her leaving her world after stepping down from the role of high priestess. (ep 16) True, there is a body double in Neige’s place, but doesn’t this constitute an international incident, taking a foreign national from her country?
- Why are Seina’s two classmates orbiting Earth? (ep 16)
- If the Tennan Group is in league with the Da Ruma Guild, why aren’t sanctions placed on their business to hamper the pirate’s growth? (ep 19)
- If the Da Ruma Guild could be crushed with just Fuku and Mizuki, why not have Seina aboard Mikagami with a couple other second-generation ships in the beginning of the series? (ep 21)
- The Galaxy Army confiscates Fuku after Mizuki is removed, stating Fuku is property of the GP as a remodel of the
Kamidake. (ep 23) How so? Several characters state that Fuku is a privately owned ship that merely has the same christened name as the GP vessel. The GP ship’s wreck is still on Jurai and was not used in the construction of Fuku. (ep 13) The Galaxy Army has no right to the ship, so is this some sort of eminent domain on behalf of the GP? - How did Tarant survive the destruction of the
Daidalos? (ep 26) Missed OpportunitiesThe pirates have grappler ships like
Outlaw Star. (ep 2) The combat could have been more action-oriented in a similar way. - People are shanghaied for tests by the Academy. (ep 5) To mimic real students, why not have Seina and his roommates volunteer to be test subjects or for odd jobs to pay their tuition? This could easily become a Miho-Kiyo-like episode of wacky occupations, building the world.
- Body enhancement could have easily made the melee combat much more like an action series. (ep 7) Moreover, Seina’s training could explore the ways these abilities could be used, or exploited.
Daidalosis similar to the Daedalusfrom Macross. (ep 10) Couldn’t it have been in a similar manner in ship-to-ship battle? - Tarant and Kiriko show top notch combative ability, but are never used in this fashion again. (ep 10)
- Elma/Ryoko Balouta’s double-persona could have been used to spy on the pirates, giving the series intrigue, as well as putting her into more adventurous and dangerous situations. (ep 11)
- Neige’s ability to mind control could have been exploited heavily. (ep 14)
- Tarant came to Earth to use Seina’s family as ransom, but was beaten back by the Masaki household. (ep 17) This would have been great to show.
- Tarant, in general, is a vicious and prideful villain. He could have been used far more effectively as a primary antagonist, taking the Da Ruma Guild for his own and battling the GP in open war. Instead, Tarant is pidgeonholed in favor of Seiryo. (ep 18) Also, his final defeat by Seina was rather weak. (ep 26)
- When Seiryo first commands the
Unko, Seina and company are beaten back, so the cast participates in a beauty pagent. (ep 19) Wouldn’t this time have been better used to plan strategy against Seiryo and the Da Ruma Guild? - Kiriko is selected to join with Mizuki. (ep 20) This would have been a great time to show more of Jurai’s culture and customs, rather than Seina being chased by Seto’s adjutants.
- In the defeat of the Da Ruma Guild, Seto and her adjutants take command of Fuku and yield the victory. (ep 21) Wasn’t this a chance for Seina’s crew to pull a win?
- Seina prepares to duel with Seiryo by lounging, eating, and drinking. (ep 22) This would have been a great time to teach Seina, to show more about how combat is done in this world, what strategies and martial arts existed. Moreover, this would be a great time for his teachers actually to teach him.
- The Zinv mecha only appeared for two episodes. (ep 23-24) The Zinv, Amane’s combat uniform (ep 19), Kiriko’s tree Mizuki (ep 20), and Azusa’s father Kazuki (ep 22) are clear allusions to
Dual!and could have been used far more effectively. In particular, Seina could have kept the mecha for future adventures aboard Fuku. Moreover, if Fuku can merge with both Mizuki and the Zinv, could the three be used in tandem? Dei ex Machinis(I apologize for the previous misspelling) Mikagami (ep 2)
- Kiriko’s badassery (ep 10)
- Ryo-Ohki (ep 12)
Chobimaruand Ryo-Ohki (ep 15) - Zinv (ep 24)
Now, while I have been very critical of both OVA series 3 and GXP, I do have some parts of the story that I did enjoy.
FunNB, Nabeshin’s avatar, is hilarious when he is not being an insufferable lecher. He is a whipping boy and the comedy relief, until he loses himself in the latter third of the series.
- Tarant was an excellent villain and looming threat. His motivation to kill Seina was great, his father being capture in Mikagami’s first attack. (ep 2) His sadism and marksmanship are masterful. (ep 10) And, he is quite tenacious to continue the entire series.
- While not the caliber of Tarant, Seiryo was a fun adversary. His journey after joining the pirates is similar to Pedro and Sandora in
Excel Sagaand actually made him endearing. (ep 18) - Likewise, Alan, Berry, and Cohen had a grand adventure from the GP to the pirates alongside Seiryo. Together, Seiryo and this “ABC trio” served as nice foils to Seina and his crew.
- Episode 8 was a fun episode, watching the cast start living together.
- Episode 10 showed just how dangerous the universe can be. Also, the image of Kiriko splattered with blood resonates very well.
- Episode 11 had great tension with Ryoko Balouta’s choice between the pirates and Seina.
- Episode 16 was overall sweet, letting everyone unwind and have time with family.
- Episode 18 showed Seiryo’s journey in contrast to Seina’s lounging, which really pushed Seiryo as a character.
- Episode 24 had great visuals with the Zinv mecha, despite being very brief.

I acknowledge that the novels and doujins exist. That is not the issue. As a work of film, the OVA continuity is incomplete as presented and has noted storytelling flaws. One should not need to have a concordance or supplementary document to enjoy and fully understand a work of film.
The Matrix, as abstract as it could be, can be understood without reading supplementary documents. Inceptionfalls under a similar heading. Are either of them perfect works? No, they have their flaws in storytelling as well, noted by several known critics. Evangelionhad tons of supplementary components, but one can enjoy the TV series or the film series individually without cross-referencing facts. Are there interesting parallels and crossovers between the media? Yes, and they may even be sequels to each other. However, they are not necessary to enjoy and understand the individual experiences. Nobuyuki wrote:Here’s where we’re going to have fundamental differences, pii. You want only the anime to be the story, and it’s not.
Very well then. The anime is not the complete story. Therefore, the anime is an incomplete work.

In episode 6, Empress Funaho complains that Yosho had not sent word in 700 years. Does this not contradict Seto’s statements in series 3 about a secret communique?
“secret communique”- doesn’t imply Funaho would have received a copy.
Considering how close Yosho is shown to be with his mother, sending a message to Seto without sending one to Funaho seems out of character.Nobuyuki wrote:Quote:Washu says she will not create another Ryoko, or Ryo-Ohki-like warship by extension, and will not help anyone to do so. Doesn’t this rule out Fuku’s creation in GXP?
Time has passed. Tenchi asked her to help his buddy, Seina, in the GP.
If GXP episode 17 is to be accepted, then only two years have passed since Tenchi released Ryoko. Thus, Washu would have gone back on her word to Funaho in under that time, not decades or centuries. Moreover, no one, not even Tenchi, says that he asked Washu to constructKamidake II. Nobuyuki wrote:

He could have married Airi after she died. 9+ months later–> Kiyone!
I could accept that speculation, though it is a missing detail that gives one pause.- July 8, 2014 at 6:49 AM

You keep using these words; I do not think they mean what you think they mean.
Very well then, let us well define our terms. : an obvious mistake or missing element in the plot of a film, book or playPlot holeProposed plot holes:OVA 1
In episode 1, the tree Funaho sends a message into space. To whom was that message sent? This is unlikely
Ryu-Ohas the Guardians state in episode 2 that they detected Ryoko.
OVA 2
Whatever happened to Ryu-Oh? She was planted in the core unit in “Night Before the Carnival”, but she is never seen again in the entire series.
- In episode 4, Clay chooses to ignore his given mission to pursue Washu. What was his original mission?
- Moreover, D3 states that someone had already been assigned to retrieve Washu. Who was that? Wouldn’t that character interfere with Clay and Zero?
- In “Here Comes Jurai, Part 2”, D3 goes to wipe Clay and Zero’s memories. Why is this, considering that in series 3, Washu is fully realized as a goddess and fully aware of Tokimi’s existence? Would knowledge of Tokimi’s location already be known to her? When Ryoko and Zero merge, Ryoko would then know of Tokimi and her location. How would that knowledge interfere, since Washu could likely explain and perhaps pacify Ryoko’s concerns?
OVA 3
In episode 1, how can Ryo-Ohki get lost?
- Why can she not isolate her childish fears and do what needs to be done to leave the woods?
- Ryo-Ohki indeed has the form of a child, but does she have the mind of a child, or an animal, or a computer unit? She has aspects of all three, but which is actually her, if any?
- Why, particularly as series 3 episode 1 has Ryoko directly upload the way home into Ryo-Ohki’s head? Even then, why does Ryoko have to be right next to Ryo-Ohki to do that?
- Rea is introduced as having existed in Tenchi’s life when he was a boy. If so, why is she not mentioned or seen in the series 1 flashbacks, considering her place in series 3 and even, debatably, Geminar?
- Mashisu at least has reason to be adopted by Seto, to marry Misao. What is Noike’s reason?
- Why does Nobuyuki try to kiss passionately his own daughter? That seems very inappropriate, considering he is soon to marry Rea.
- Moreover, why does Airi try to kiss passionately her grandson, with her husband standing just a few meters away? Again, wasn’t Katsuhito’s wife Terran, spurring the issue with Azusa?
- Why would Ryoko, or even Kagato, be intimated by Airi or Seto? Ryoko is notorious for sacking and crushing Jurai’s defenses, and Kagato is known as the “Ruins Buster” and is eternally wanted by the GP. I have a hard time seeing either cowering in fear of a single Juraian woman.
- Moreover, why does Noike have Kyoko, a top-secret upgraded third generation tree? Presumably, this would be because of Seto, which emphasizes the question of why Seto would be interested in a no-name GP officer.
- Why is the Kuramitsu family so ready to go to war over Mihoshi? Admittedly, if Kuramitsu Mikami is so close to Seto, couldn’t a more diplomatic solution be given? Also, why is Marshall Kuramitsu Minami cackling like a lunatic and not listening to reason?
- Why does no one notice that Noike is purposefully monopolizing Tenchi, to the point that she seemingly has poisoned him for the purpose of ingratiating herself to him and the household?
- What happened to Mihoshi all those years go to make Misao so protective of her?
- In episode 4, Seto says that Yosho sent word after Ayeka and Sasami had left to find him. Couldn’t she have contacted Ryu-Oh or the Guardians while the girls were in statis to turn them around?
- If Seto could have gotten word from Yosho, couldn’t Ayeka and Sasami have sent word back after Yosho revealed himself? Why did it take until Azusa arrived unannounced before Jurai came to investigate? Moreover, if Earth was already well-known, wouldn’t it be the first place to look?
- Since Tsunami is there, why is she not stopping the combat? While this does take dramatic emphasis off Misao and Mashisu, it seems unnecessary.
- If Washu was fully aware of her power against Kagato or Clay, she could have waved her hand and rectified both situations. More importantly, the episode with Clay aboard
Shungaseems far more Washu-centered. Having Tenchi use his Light Hawk Wings to save Ayeka and Mihoshi seems a strange emphasis shift when all three have been pidgeonholed in the bowels of the ship for the entire episode, and all the action has been focused on Washu. Why not have Washu be the savior for her own episode? - Moreover, as a goddess, why would she suffer being sealed in a crystal aboard
Soja? - Who is the figure of light talking to Tenchi? While it seems to be Tenchi’s character design, his identity is not explicitly noted.
- Similarly, why does Misaki have the Counteractor aspect? She has never demonstrated any ability or predilection of this persona or power before. Even then, how is “other Tenchi” able to passify and remove her?
- At the end of the episode, Noike and Fuku appear in the past, changing Mihoshi’s note as Zed had. While this does ensure the same sequence of events up to episode 5, Noike mentions that this will ensure that Fuku will meet Seina. How so?
- In the +1 special, Marshall Kuramitsu Minami is deposed by his sister, Kuramitsu Mikami. While I don’t disagree that he should be punished for his actions, how does she have the power to override him? Her place in the political structure is not explained in this series.
- While Nobuyuki mentioned that he found Masaki Kiyone’s (and Airi’s) script was in bad taste, why did he, among others, proceed with her black comedy? Considering Tenchi’s temperment, that seemed in very poor taste, as evidenced by Tenchi’s own reaction.
- Why are Rea and Noike the only ones allowed to console Tenchi? One would think that Ryoko or Nobuyuki might be better suited for the task, particularly as Ryoko watched over him when his mother died. Also, admittedly, it seems more Nobuyuki’s place as father to explain this to his son.
- According to Washu’s theory, Noike is a fragment personality from Kagato-F, who was picked up by Noike’s “mother”. Clay later sealed the Kagato-F side away, and Zed found and used her to spy on the household throughout series 3. Tokimi allows the other persona to speak, and Washu removes the seal, allowing them to fuse into one entity, much like Ryoko and Zero. How and when did Clay and Zed accomplish all of this? Wouldn’t Clay have mentioned a contingency plan or arrangement with Zed in series 2?

In episode 6, Empress Funaho complains that Yosho had not sent word in 700 years. Does this not contradict Seto’s statements in series 3 about a secret communique?
- Washu says she will not create another Ryoko, or Ryo-Ohki-like warship by extension, and will not help anyone to do so. Doesn’t this rule out Fuku’s creation in GXP?
- Azusa had an issue with Yosho about him having a child with a Terran, but in series 3, he is married to Airi, who moreover states that she is Masaki Kiyone’s mother. Is this not a contradiction?

the answer at the end of the day to such matters is “because he’s Tenchi.” As a character, Tenchi has gone from likeable underdog to ‘that lucky somagun’ before arriving to the place we find ourselves today. In a world with humanoid aliens and mysticism intertwined with fantastic technology, the most difficult element for me as a fan to buy is Tenchi’s unconscious, hypnotic pull over anything female (stomachingsexism of that level is the topic of another, unrelated rant, so I digress). Because Kami-Tenchi! It’s a joke at this point, and I would even go so far as to say Kajishima now intends for it to be that way–that, or his ego really has gone
thatout of whack over the years; basing a character off yourself is one thing, even if it’s the protagonist with hidden powers, but “God”? No, wait, make that “Tenchi-kami: God of Sexiness, irresistible to women’s carnal desires!” Come on, man.
It is a sad truth, to be honest. Tenchi himself has also had significant character decay like the girls have. Perhaps a nice change of pace would be to have say Ryoko or Ayeka be the lead in a series, focus on their designs and schemes, rather than Tenchi or the household as a whole. After all,Tenchi Muyo! in Love 2did very well at having Ryoko and Ayeka as the leads with Tenchi’s story less primary.
