I’m going to be that guy right now that knows absolutely nothing about GiTS but really loves the look of it and wants to get into it as soon as possible. Can you guys give me a SUCCINCT lowdown of the different installments in this franchise and a recommended watching order so I can get caught up?

Welcome to the forum! I too haven’t really been able to find other people in my vicinity who share my feelings for Tenchi, and I have found that this is a great place for fans to come together and talk about the show! I totally hear you about watching Tenchi being a personal experience, and I hope that we can help enrich that experience for you here! Feel free to make yourself at home here, and post wherever you find something interesting! I look forward to seeing you around!

Another favorite genre of mine! I basically grew up watching The Princess Bride, so it makes sense, I suppose. I actually haven’t seen the Errol Flynn Robin Hood, but I have heard wonderful things about it. The prize of the genre for me, however, will always be the 1934 version of The Count of Monte Cristo!

Welcome to the forum Aura34! Feel free to introduce yourself over at our “introductions thread” if you want!

As for the question, I seem to recall us having a thread about this very topic before the switch to 3.0 that had lots of good discussion, but it seems to have been lost in the transition. As for me, I’d like to see a return to a more character driven story. I felt that OVA3 focused so much on the massively intricate plot elements and the characters were “just along for the ride.” I’d like to see a return to the balance of plot development and character development that we saw in the first two OVAs. Also, I’d like to see a good villain again. I couldn’t stand Dr. Clay, and I thought Z had great potential but missed the mark.

One of my favorite WWII movies is The Longest Day because of the All Star Cast.

Or as I called it as a (stupid, unknowing, ignorant) child: The Longest Movie! 😆

Or course, I have since come to LOVE that particular film for so many reason, not the least of which is the phenomenal cast. I also really appreciate the depiction of the starkness and suddenness of death. You never know who is going to buy the farm, and when they do you have little time to grieve. It really gives a good impression of what warfare was actually like. There are also so many memorable scenes from the movie, but the imagery of the entire invasion fleet appearing out of the fog is stunning (and the German officer’s reaction is priceless too! 😆 )

The only question I have now is how did they manage to get

the Yamato raised and spaceworthy in time for take off when they only had a year to get to Iskandar

    and back.

Very good question ML! Allow me to answer:

It is implied in the first episode of the show that the war between Earth and Gamilon had been taking place for a long time before the start of the show, and that what we see in the first episode (the irradiated Earth, and the last remaining Earth fleet being destroyed) is only the end of a very long conflict. So it’s not like Gamilon came out of nowhere and suddenly Earth was left without a fleet, there were many batles they just werent shown. As the Earth forces were slowly dwindling, it became apparent to the leaders of Earth that they were going to lose the war, and that eventually all life on Earth was doomed, so they came up with a plan to build a ship that would carry enough humans into space to escape Earth and start over on another planet. The problem was that they couldn’t build it out it the open, or else the Gamilons would immediately take it out. So they had to come up with a way to construct a ship without alerting the Gamilons. The wreck of the battleship Yamato was chosen because its hull already existed, so they didn’t need to construct a ship from scratch, and because the Gamilons would never suspect it. So, by the time Starsha’s message arrives on Earth, the Yamato is already nearly completed, only its mission changes from one of colonization to a last ditch effort to save Earth.

Yamato 2199 actually goes into much more detail about the events prior to the beginning of the original show, and it confirms many things that the original simply implied.

Thanks for the info Soundmonkey! (It’s good to see you again, btw :D )

Anyway, any idea why they decided to split the set into two? I mean that really sucks from a consumer point of view. They had no problem releasing the OVA blu-ray set as one volume and it contained the same amount of content, more or less. I certainly hope that they do eventually release it as a single volume, because at $45 a piece I’ve lost a lot of excitement about owning the series.

Though my overall favorite Civil War movie has to be the Audie Murphy version of The Red Badge of

    Courage.

^THIS. I love this movie so much! I find it extra awesome that Audie Murphy himself was a decorated war hero. Oh man, If we’re opening up war movies for discussion now I will be thrilled! I just watched one of my favorites the other day, “The Bridge on the River Kwai.” Sir Alec Guinness is fantastic as the ever proper and obstinate British commander leading his captured troops in building a bridge for the Japanese. As for modern war movies, I suppose my favorite would have to be “Enemy at the Gates.” A stark, but entertaining depiction of the Battle of Stalingrad (AKA the REAL turning point of WWII), it’s one of the rarer movies in which I thoroughly enjoyed Jude Law’s performance.
