Here’s a few more: these two are Ryoko tributes, one with a Smashmouth song, the other with a slightly remixed version of “Japanese Boy” by Aneka. Both are some of my earliest works, but I still love them.

Well, as much as I love Ryoko, Tenchi, & the rest of the main cast of Tenchi Muyo, I really haven’t gotten the chance to talk specifically about one of my favorite characters: Yosho

When we’re first introduced to him, he just seems like a pretty ordinary elderly man: slowly walking up the stone steps of the Masaki Shrine, grumpy at Tenchi for not doing his chores. A little later on, we start to see him as the “cool” Grandpa, consistently able to beat Tenchi at martial arts, swordplay, or pretty much anyting else ^-^ we see his sense of humor & wit, & we start to get more interested in this character, Katsuhito Masaki, guardian of the Masaki Shrine. Perhaps he has an interesting background; we assume he must have been a great swordmaster in his prime, & start to wonder about his backstory: where he came from, what made him become a Shinto priest…who is Katsuhito???

    *SPOILER ALERT!!!

& then of course, later on throughout oav1, after some guesswork & putting the pieces together, we learn who Katsuhito really is–Yosho, first crown-prince of a planet called Jurai, & undisputedly the greatest swordsman in the galaxy. He is well over 700 years old, yet–as we learn later on–because of Washu’s gems & his tree, Funaho, he is as young & fit as he ever was, yet with the knowledge, wisdom & wit that one could only acquire from having a long life & an equally long set of life experiences to match. Yet Yosho never presents himself as this all-knowing guru, or anything of the sort; he usually remains quiet and reserved, but ready to help should the need truly ever arise, & eager to pass on important family history & life lessons to Tenchi & anyone else that will listen.

I didn’t really identify with Yosho much when I first saw Tenchi Muyo (back in 2000, I was like 10 when I first saw it) yet as I’ve become re-acquainted with the series recently, I’ve been able to appreciate the story & characters in a whole new way. For some reason, I identify with Yosho in many ways. He’s sort of the “black sheep” of his family; a royal type, THE crown prince no less, runs off away from his overbearing parents & a lifestyle he can’t relate to. He feels very trapped, pushed into a mold, so he breaks free of that mold by running away to earth; like a teenager with angst driving away from their parents’ house in their dad’s car. & while on Earth, he experiences so many things he never would have on Jurai: the beauty of nature around him, the people that inhabited the land, & especially within the context of Tenchi Universe–love & family. He would have been youthful & lived forever, perhaps even one day ruling the known universe as King had he remained on Jurai. Yet on Earth, he found a peace & happiness, & sense of contentment he could never have had on Jurai. & since he didn’t at the time know about the full effect of Washu’s gems on his tree, he realized full well, by all accounts, that he would grow old & eventually die on Earth, & he was at peace with that. Ayeka, when she first realizes that Katsuhito is her brother, is confused & perplexed why Yosho would possibly choose growing old & dying rather than youth & eternal life on Jurai. Yosho simply states that Earth is his home, & it is where he wishes to be buried, & that someday, Ayeka will be able to understand (even though she herself is probably hundreds of years old). This demonstrated to me that wisdom is not a given with old age–I’ve met 10 year olds that were wiser than some middle-aged people I’ve run across on my life’s journey (sad that some people are that immature, isn’t it?) But I digress…

This has a profound impact on me; it’s really food for thought: it doesn’t make much sense to me either. Nowadays, in our society where image means so much, where people spend so much money on anti-aging creams & botox procedures, who in their right mind would choose old age over youth??? It hits a nerve that many of us–if not most of us–dread (even if we don’t think about it on a daily basis): our own mortality. It may not seem so obvious, but if one stops to think about it, & if we’re willing to admit it, we’re afraid of dying, & worry about growing old. Yosho demonstrates to me (& can to anyone) that growing old is a part of life, as is death. It’s not something to be feared, or to worry about, or something you should try to avoid. The best any of us can do is cherish our loved ones around us–for however long we have with them–& try to find peace & contentment for ourselves in our own lives. Sometimes, I think ‘what’s the f***ing point?’ as I’m going about my day. All of us have a limited amount of time here on Earth, then we’re gone–why? what’s even the point? (Let me assure you, from personal experience, that kind of thinking can lead to a rather dull view of life. Makes life seem boring & pointless). But Yosho’s life experience can teach us so much about what’s really important in life; the things that are closest to us, that we take for granted, usually the simplest of things are often the most precious, & are things to be cherished & enjoyed. In your day to day routine, life on Earth may seem pretty boring, maybe even pointless. But if you have those thoughts, I would encourage you to stop, look at the leaves on the trees, listen to the birds singing, feel the cool breeze on your face & the warm sun on your back, stop & look at the clear blue sky, or the rain streaming down your window, or the snow drifting outside & I think you’ll come a bit closer to understanding how precious life & our world really is (Yosho gave up being king of the known universe & eternal youth for it! Food for thought).

So for anyone & everyone who reads this, I’m sorry I got kind of preachy there, that’s not my intent. I just wanted to share how a fictional character, in a fictional world, has actually had a profound influence on me, on my outlook on day-to-day life. I hope this shows to anyone that a well-written work of fiction has so much more potential value than just escapism or entertainment (not that those aren’t all well & good) & I hope that there is someone in your life–real or fictional–that can help you have the kind of appreciation for some aspect of your life that Yosho has had for me.

Cheers to the coolest Grandpa in the galaxy!

Good stuff guys, it’s nice to see we have people across the pond and from multiple corners of the States ^_^. Btw wwwhhhooo, my great grandpa lives in Nebraska, specifically near Lincoln (I actually went to visit him last August, checked out the campus and briefly went on the field and to see my grandpa’s old fraternity xP.

Nice to see we have a good variety of people in here, Tenchi draws in so many cool people =D!

That is awesome! (& awesome that you are able to visit your GREAT grandpa) If you’re ever near Lincoln again, you should let me know! (you know, if you have time to say hi)

& I agree, I often think how amazing it is how many people I’ve met thanks to an anime I used to watch on CN so many years ago… & thanks to you guys for Tenchiforum of course

Ryokofan, I wish THAT was on the ceiling of the Sistine chapel. Now THAT’S art! XD

Oyasumi, I think you very elegantly summed up many of the reasons I love Ryoko as well (tough act to follow lol) well here goes nothing…

*I apologize in advance, I will try to keep comments about Ryoko’s smoking hot bod to a minimum, & have a legitimate, well-thought out expression of Ryoko’s characteristics…

I love her personality; I’m a little sad to admit, but I’ve never come across anyone with a personality like hers–though I think at the same time it just shows how amazing Ryoko really is…she’s not even ‘one in a million’–there’s only one Ryoko Hakubi in the entire universe!

She just has this perfect balance of toughness & tomboy-ishness yet at the same time can be very feminine, cute, & even downright adorable at times (& if no one minds me saying, damn sexy as well!). With some other girls I’ve had experience with (both fictional & in real life) clinginess can be downright offputting, but with Ryoko being so attached to Tenchi, it just makes me laugh every time I see it (& makes me wish aloud that I were in Tenchi’s shoes at that moment). Not to be confused with unnecessary clinginess, what IS always attractive (yes, ladies, you may take notes) is her devotion for the guy she loves. She’s crazy about Tenchi, & she doesn’t care who knows it (especially Tenchi). With Ayeka (not bashing, just using as a comparison) she has the “shy girl” routine, but to me, a girl that’s unashamed of who she is, how she feels, & doesn’t give a damn who knows it is more attractive to me… in short, Ryoko doesn’t play games–well, I’m sure she would love games, she has a very fun-loving, sometimes child-like personality (like oav) which is another reason I find her appealing: she’s over 2,000 years old, but with the personality of a teenager; she’s young at heart (& body, if you don’t mind me saying…anyway, where was I…)–what I mean is, she doesn’t play head games: she makes it clear to Tenchi from the beginning how she feels about him, & doesn’t try to mess with his head in regards to her feelings for him. ALTHOUGH I did find it hilarious when she fibbed to Tenchi & everyone about Ryo Ohki’s egg being her’s and Tenchi’s; Ryoko being a troublemaker–yet another reason I loved her in ANY of the Tenchi series–she’s a bad girl. *Before I forget, fyi ladies lying about being pregnant in real life=NOT FUNNY! She’s not a princess, not a dainty girl waiting to be rescued or waited on hand-and-foot: she’s a space pirate! She’s robbed banks, stolen ships, ran from the cops on high-speed chases across the universe! She’s independent…yet as we hear toward the end of Tenchi Universe, when she states “I’m lonely…” when she is injured aboard Ryo-Ohki, she’s her own woman, & a tough space pirate, but also looking for love across the vast emptiness of space. Even a tough girl like “the demon caller” needs someone special in her life–life lesson right there–& after she finds Tenchi, she never wants to leave his side. It’s childishly adorable, yet admirable, attractive & yes, “mushy-gushy” at the same time. She’s loyal…love that about her too ^^ (how many times have I used “love” already? Don’t count, probably too many lol)

I also love how even though she has all these super powers & abilities, & is super strong, she never wants to emmasculate Tenchi. She constantly demonstrates by her behavior towards him & others that she wants Tenchi to be her man, to stand up & fight for her when she needs him (& of course, vice-versa, she fights for him as well). Whenever she physically overpowers Tenchi, it’s always subtle & cute, like she hugs him & doesn’t let go, despite Tenchi’s best efforts. She would never, like in front of Ayeka or the others, say or do something to try to demasculate or humiliate him. She wants him to become a man, & to be all he can be…yet again, showing her undying true love & devotion for Tenchi.

& of course, all her little quirks & mannerisms as described by Oyasumi so well–the way she floats & phases around Tenchi, the way she lounges around the support beams of the house, sleeping in & drinking sake, the way she is somewhat naive, the way she schemes to get what she wants, the way she could totally beat Ayeka at arm wrestling yet still give her a run for her money (in my opinion, beat her) in a swimming suit contest, the way she acts so melodramatic in front of Tenchi to piss off Ayeka (& gotta throw this in somewhere) the way she looks–she is HOT! Her hair (that color, what is that? Aqua green? Aqua blue? More green than blue? Blue than green?) Her eyes are gorgeous, perfect bod, I even like her ears, they look cute ^-^ (though with new artstyle in oav3, they looked a bit weirder, but still) & without a doubt, I just love how crazy she is about Tenchi!

    So in short:

    Her loyalty

    Her independence

    Her strength

    Her feminimity

    Her beauty

    Her devotion

    Her “bad girl” side

& I think most importantly: her non-existant fear to be who she is, to be emotionally “naked” to the world. (I used that weird analogy to try to tie in her personality with her behavior at the bathhouse: her nudity, I feel, was not just mere fan service. It was completely consistent with her personality. She is unashamed of who she is. In front of Tenchi, Ayeka, the whole damn world, with her attitude & behavior she is always saying ‘this is me, take it or leave it’. Well, Ryoko, given everything I’ve mentioned above, after all these years I still say I will gladly take you just as you are…don’t ever, ever EVER change!!! ^-^

What I like about Tenchi–why I think I started watching Tenchi Muyo in the first place–was that he was just an ordinary kid. He went to school, had to do chores, & other than living in the beautiful mountains of rural Japan, had a pretty average, maybe even boring life…just like the rest of us. Then one day, out of boredom & curiosity, he stumbles upon a demon in his family’s shrine…& his life is never the same after that!

Yet another reason I didn’t quite like the way Tenchi Muyo oav ended up, the way Tenchi was actually a god incarnate or something like that. I like Tenchi of the first oav, of Tenchi Universe, & even Tenchi & Tokyo (though not when he dumped Ryoko!) I did like him having some extraordinary hidden powers, & his backstory of being descended from Jurain nobility; he had absolutely NO idea of his extra-terrestrial background, & if he hadn’t awakened Ryoko, he probably never would have. It just made me think, who knows what extraordinary things there may be hidden for all of us–whether it be some unknown family secret (maybe grandpa’s actually from outer space! 0.o) or some hidden power within–it just made me think if it can happen to Tenchi (like being visited by hot chicks from outer space that are crazy about you lol) or more realistically: if Tenchi can do it, maybe I can too; a lesson that can be learned by anyone who watches the series, & is applicable in even the most ordinary day-to-day life experiences.

The idea of extraordinary things happening to ordinary people is one I’ve always loved; whenever I’ve come across it in literature, film or anime, I’ve often fallen in love with that particular series. It’s a theme that is at the center of many great works (like Lord of the Rings, for instance) & even a central theme of alot of anime out there today, but Tenchi Muyo was one of the first to really run with it, & that’s why I love Tenchi the series, & Tenchi Masaki, the super-powered ‘average Joe’ of the anime world.

I definitely gotta’ make it a point to see Highschool of the Dead. Been highly recommended by some friends of mine, & now on here… plus, I love most anything to do with zombies (waaay before it was “hip” thanks alot hot topic). Did hear there was an abundance of fan service–which even though I’m a guy, can sometimes be waaay overdone–but all-in-all I’ve heard nothing but good things about this anime.
