http://www.reactiongifs.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/twitchy.gif " /> I mean…I’ve literally been saying that for 18 months now, but anyway…were I a “weatherman” predicting the forecast of TM!, I’d say yes, yes it is.
http://tenchiforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=20&t=1555&start=20 ” class=”bbcode_url”> http://tenchiforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=20&t=1555&start=20 Old man Kaji (if I recall) basically said “m’kay done” after this one…but hey, Miyazaki’s said he was “retired” several projects ago, so ya never know….
And as we’ve said in numerous podcasts and in numerous posts, according to Negishi himself (via twitter), Toru Miura (AIC President) literally said TM! was “dead” as a franchise before Ai came out. Negishi pretty much had to convince him to give it a shot, and haggle to even get 5 min length installments (Miura wanted like a min and a half or something like that). Justifiably so, from a business standpoint Miura had no faith in TM!’s viability at that time. It was dead.
Then Ai happened, the impossible was done: fans were galvanized, and enthusiasm was generated for the franchise again…then, instead of having Negishi do more, they bet the farm on another OVA, Kaji’s vision, i.e. what bankrupted AIC in the first place. I’ll probably go to my grave never knowing precisely why, but that’s what happened…and again, I could be wrong, but I think what
willhappen is now TM! will, for real, be “dead” because we’re going to spend literally our last chance on a continuity that’s painted itself into a corner and that pretty much gives 99% of Tenchi fans shell shock just thinking about the last OVA installment. When you’re dealing with a (nearly) dead franchise, you gotta’ bring your A-game or anything coming down the pike will be DOA.
Ai came out every day, whereas the shortened attention span of the average anime fan anymore…well, how long between episode installments? It being an OVA, I’m guessing maybe months. That, unfortunately, will hurt its memorability factor as well.
Hey, I kinda’ hope I’m proven wrong, but…how often do you win the jackpot twice in a row?
(I think it was beaglesan, if I recall, who put it best: “wasted opportunity” indeed.)

Yeah Nobs, what
doesthat mean? If you wouldn’t mind elaborating for the rest of us (using proper English syntax, with relevant vernacular considerations taken into account, of course). Simple Bing or Google translate doesn’t really have the refined edge that a Nil or Crazed translation has, does it?What about that “kindness of strangers” route? The “a.k.a. not these guys” bit? After all, I’m sure plenty of other people are willing to translate and localize stuff for you, for free, backed with professional consultation, all while getting snarked at constantly….- November 30, 2016 at 1:17 AM

mitsuki lover wrote:The only disappointment was no sight of Kiyone, won’t she be in this one?
As in Mihoshi’s partner? No, namely because this is Kajishima’s dog and pony show this go-round, and she doesn’t exist in his continuity.
Ukinojo92 wrote:Just wondering, is the forum going to do the eng subs for OVA 4 when it comes out? I know there will be raws and possibly espanol subs (esp subs strangely are usually first up), but will forum members do the eng subs like for Ai ? I know some of the senior members don’t care for 4, but you can only get so far with looking at a raw and it’s tiring going back and forth translating a esp sub. Or is there a official eng sub with release or later on?
Yeah, all I know is I ain’t doin’ it, and I’m pretty sure none of the homeboys here who worked on
Aiwill either. Somebody else out there will have to take up that mantle if English subs are so desired. - November 3, 2016 at 5:46 AM

Thanks for the suggestion, Ukinojo! That reminds me…it’s kinda’ funny in all these years, I’ve yet to watch Moldiver (it’s funny because I’ve loved Tenchi Universe for so long, and as you pointed out Mihoshi seems to love it). Ah, I love it when I have new/old (“nold”?) anime to check out.

Ninja! Sorry didn’t see this sooner, man. If you’re still looking on coming over, April 2017 I think dagon and I are going to try and be at this con in Columbus, OH (and anyone else reading this who may want to meet up too, could be really fun). I thinkthat’d be your best bet for running into more than one of us, as we’re pretty spread out across the country! https://yoi-con.com/https://yoi-con.com/” class=”bbcode_url”> Reply or PM or whatever, if you’re actually going to all the trouble to come over here and you’re wanting to go to a con/meet up, we might as well try and meetcha’ half way! (So to speak.)

Wow, shadbomb! It’s been a while, sorry we missed ya! Yeah, we’ve gone with a client called Discord now instead of Mumble, but the principle is exactly the same. Anyway man, sorry if I’m not around as much anymore, but I’m glad Tenchi and Tenchiforum is still a source of fond memories for you…maybe we’ll be able to catch up sometime.
Apologies, everyone. The amount of spam around lately has become intolerable, so I’ll see what we can do (other than constantly cleaning the board). Thanks for the notifications, everyone!

At least people are looking forward to future installments of Star Wars again.

Tenchi is considered kinda dead as a franchise after gxp and ova 3.
You mean that they’re forgotten basically?
Yup. Either that, or people try to forget lol. But as surprising as it seems, that’s exactly what’s going on. I went to a convention recently, maybe a year ago, where it was Tenchi-themed and the guy running it put on a great con, he was cosplayed as Tenchi, had a little Ryo-Ohki, was a huge fan. In his excitement, he wanted to show me his entire TM! disc collection which was respectable (had a lot of the new FUNi releases), but he had NEVER seen OVA 3 or GXP. Like most other fans, his last memories of Tenchi are fond, because they’re literally from either Toonami or 1999 (the second Tenchi in Love movie).
On the one hand, I’m still somewhat surprised that people, even enthusiastic fans, haven’t seen or sometimes even heard of Geminar, GXP, and/or OVA 3…yet that’s the missing piece to the puzzle of “Why are so many people actually excited for OVA 4?”: It’s because they don’t know what they’re likely in for.
OVA 3? Early 00s, and we all remembered Tenchi from Pioneer (not FUNi) and Toonami with either the original OVA and/or Universe, so it caught us all by surprise…what’s more, when it comes to either good or bad publicity, word didn’t really get around all that well. Why? Because it wasn’t soon enough to be in that golden spot on Toonami, but not late enough for things like social media to really evolve to where they are today.
Fast forward to today, 2 important things to keep in mind: 1) most people’s last memories of Tenchi are, as I said, either Toonami or Negishi’s films, so they’re set up for disappointment just like most of us were a decade ago; 2) social media: when that thing hits, EVEN IF it makes much of a ripple in the news (ANN and internet will help, but it’s being released straight to disc, even
Aihad a tv run), as soon as word gets out that it’s “Meh” then that’s it. Tenchi will really, truly, pretty much be a dead franchise (as it’s more or less has been) only this time you probably won’t have dagon123 and company to lead the way, keep it somewhat alive, make con appearances, do podcasts, translate works, etc. etc. etc. and I don’t think anyone will go through the trouble to pick up that Herculean mantle all for “Meh.” If DBZ is having a tough time riding on its nostalgia, you think Tenchi has a better chance? Me thinks not. AIC had literally one last death-star-destroying shot to salvage themselves and the franchise a la
Ai, but for some reasons they/Miura blew it. OVA 3/GXP/Geminar bankrupted them once; I wouldn’t be shocked if OVA 4 did so once again. mitsuki lover wrote:The idea of having one of the girls being the main protagonist sounds rather interesting.
Indeed, there are half a million ways to save this franchise…one day. But akin to Star Wars, that will not happen until the “George Lucas” of TM! no longer has sole creative control of the reins.
