I’ll chip in a bit here! You’ve got some titles I’d like to get to someday as well, as many are before my time. Cheesy dubs, you say? Keep
Project A-koon your list then! (Not saying they’re bad, it’s just Project A-koitself is pretty cheesy.) Since it’s kind of a one-and-done experience,
Elf 17OVA might be a good addition for a marathon. Speaking of one-and-done, if you’re looking for suggestions of something quick, from the eighties, and something you may have never heard of before, maybe take a look at
Outlanders. It’s…a little weird, I must say, nothing spectacular but the animation’s nice enough and Kahm is definitely eighties-flared eye candy of the ‘strong gal’ variety with a flair of the oddly eccentric (yes, I mean the horns). And speaking of shorties, might as well keep
Dragon Halfon your list: those two episodes fly by, and it’s kind of a fun little romp. For good measure, you’ve likely seen it but just in case you or anyone else reading this hasn’t had the pleasure, check out the original
Bubblegum CrisisOVA. It’s awesome. (And since you said nineties as well, the Tokyo 2040remake is actually amazing as well, but it’s a much larger time commitment i.e. not marathon material.) In the mood for Sword & Sorcery circa 1990s that’s not
Slayers? Ruin Explorersis a fun (four ep?) OVA experience. Anyway, there’s a few from me, a motley mix of 80s/90s, short/really short, quality/meh. Have fun!
(Not to add too many on your pile, here, but while I’m thinking about it, if anyone has an opinion on
Wanna-Be’sand would like to share, please do! I forgot until now that it’s been on my list.) - April 18, 2015 at 11:45 PM

Day 14: Fav OP? Universeopening gets me super pumped, and it’s awesome that the singer did it in Japanese AND English, but…favorite, I gotta’ give it up to the original OVA opening. Mysterious and enigmatic, it was very contemporary yet tinged with a air of the ancient, and now it’s my personal nostalgia-fueled time machine. Day 15: Most shocking scene? The infamous “slap heard ’round the world” a.k.a. when Tenchi slaps Ryoko right in the face in
Daughter of Darkness. Day 16: Favorite quote? I got a lot, and most of them originate from Yosho; but as many here will suspect (yeah, yeah, roll them eyes, I don’t care): “You know, the carnival comes and goes…if you wait for a while, it’ll always come back to you…” – Ryoko,
TUep 26. Day 17: Funniest scene? Darn that’s tough. But amazingly, amidst all the great memories I have over the years, a newbie is a serious contender for this prestigious position: ‘Bouncer Ryoko’ courtesy of
Ai Tenchi Muyo!I mean…dayyuum that killed me first…oh, eight times? LOL and it still makes me chuckle every single time. Day 18: Favorite Storyline? Again, almost impossible, but…despite what one may think of it based on the art style or the characters, the story of
Tenchi Foreverwas in my opinion amazing, and objectively very ‘progressive’ for a Tenchi series because it treaded waters that no other incarnation of Tenchi had dared go near and to-date stillhasn’t ever since. Day 19: Preferred Art style design? Gotta’ say OVA 1: Not only is it ‘truest’ and had the budget to do so, but I subjectively like it the best. The bar was set appropriately high for great characters and content, cels painted beautifully, and those crisp nineties-style lines and eighties end-of-an-era ‘pointy’ hairstyles are as timeless as they are sexy (s’right, I said it, don’t itemize, take it all in).

That’s a cool idea! Seeing a somewhat recent episode of
Stardust Crusadersfeaturing events from a less serious perspective a la one Iggy’s point of view reminded me of this. It’d be fun. Dagon123 wrote:
What if there was a show JUST about the girls? Do you think it could work?As crazy as some may think it, and as painfully obvious as it seems, to me this sounds like the best idea in recent memory if aiming for a fun, new angle for a spin-off;
No Need For Tenchi: Really!or something equally facetious comes to mind. Though it’s been brought up in passing for various reasons (chiefly of what I’ve seen has been for lesbian shipping ranging from humorous to semi-serious ends), a serious approach at this setup would yield gold that Tenchi fans of every stripe and color could enjoy. Though there’s nothing wrong with this forthcoming approach, I would fear for it becoming a cliche “cute girls doing cute things” modern creation where nothing actually happens because of all things out there, between the length of time it’s been around and its characters’ straight-up potential for emotional exploration, development, slapstick comedy along with heartfelt heartache etc., we all know Tenchi girls have potential for more. We’ve seen the girls fighting over Tenchi, and honestly in a way it really does never get old; but after getting a small taste of ‘what could be’ courtesy of
Tenchi Forever, time away from Tenchi for the girls to focus on themselves individually and collectively would do them worlds of good while giving us time to focus on them not as love interests but purely as full-fledged characters entirely standing on their own. (Ironically, though convenient, I just called ‘the girls’ what we all usually do: “The Tenchi Girls” so see how unintentionally or otherwise they’re all accessories for, or at best ancillary to, “the main man” Tenchi? It needn’t be so!) A
Tenchiseries without Tenchi Masaki…I LOVE it! (No offense Tenchi, we still like ya.) Anime geek? Rambling? Yeah, yeah you should do fine here. badass1 Welcome!- April 13, 2015 at 2:06 AM

Super catch-up! Day 5: Character as best friend? Ryo-Ohki would be a blast!
Day 6: Workout buddy? Regardless of knowing the hell I would go through, Old Man Yosho. He’d put me through the ringer and if I survived the training I’d be at least 150% more badass.
Day 7: Character crush? I fell hard for Ryoko from day one; but going back years later, I realize maybe I have a teeny tiny crush on Kiyone. ^^
Day 8: Crossover I’d like to see? With an emphasis on “see”
El-Hazard. Come on!!! It’d be so cool, and it’s brimming with potential for series/dimensional crisscross love quadrangles/fleeting crushes/scheming hilarity. Day 9: Character I hate? Lady Seto. She must surely have been designed to garner ire (yet maddeningly despite her antagonistic behavior, is not an antagonist proper at any point).
Day 10: Favorite Ending? “Talent For Love” (not just Tenchi, but it’s pretty much my favorite ending, period).
Day 11: Favorite Episode? Either first episode of OVA, or the last episode of
Universe: the former is damn near objectively perfect, and the latter makes me feel the feels every single time. It’s sappy and heartfelt and fun, and that’s just any ol’ time I watch it: the first time seeing it, you’re so relieved at how everything turned out happily, there’s hope for the future, and for about a good solid minute or two you’re just downright giddy. Day 12: Favorite music?
to be sure, and I genuinely love all of the music in Tenchi. I’m not sure if my answers will differ from when I was last asked this question, but if so only slightly: I love Ryoko’s theme, and Ryo-Ohki’s theme, and all of the OVA (all by one very talentedA fun topic of discussion ) particularly the opening theme that draws you in so effectively. But, to get to the point already, I’ll say for the cream of the crop Tenchi music, look to the films, especiallySeikou NagaokaIn Love. Everything about this film was done big budget, and the score was no exception; from an already stellar lineup, I’ll choose “Achika’s Theme” as a lifelong favorite of mine: not even three seconds in, and I’m welling up…bout twenty seconds in, I’m crying. Every time. Seriously. (Excuse me, I think I’ve got a movie to watch now….) Day 13: Favorite VA/Seiyuu? I’ll pick one of each! Original English cast was awesome, but I gotta’ go with Petrea Burchard (you know, Ryoko) as my fav! Japanese end…well, shucks, this seems short-sighted, but I really like Ai Orikasa’s (you know, Ryoko) performances as well. She just sounds so aptly sultry!

SilverWhisper wrote:The budget was 1.1 billion JPY, but only amassed 750 million at the box office. While it’s a shitload of money and makes whatever Char’s Counterattack grossed look like chump change, it still failed to break even. Using the loss estimation formula, (TWG / 2) – PB, you get 725,000,000 JPY, almost as much as it originally grossed! We’re talking about 1988 levels, too.
The 49 billion JPY number tossed around the internet is likely from post-theatrical earnings, and recently inflation-adjusted.
Wow. I guess when looking at such a fixed point in time, and comparing ‘flop vs success’ based on total production vs. short-term gross,
Akira‘s promptly accumulated hundreds of millions can legitimately be viewed as having ‘bombed’ much like a Fortune 500 CEO getting a multi-million dollar severance check after stepping down is him/her experiencing unemployment. Thank you for being so obliging. SilverWhisper wrote:LOL, maybe this thread should be moved to the “Other Anime” section.
Agreed, as long as any sidetracks steer back towards Tenchi in the 1990s it can stay here, but otherwise there are other avenues for interesting discussions such as these.

Day 2: OTP? I think I said this in the 30 day anime challenge! Even though she’s too cool for him, I’m all for Ryoko gettin’ her man.Day 3: Favorite villain? It’s OVA 1 Kagato, no doubt about it.
Day 4: Character I cosplay as? Sadly, I’ve never cosplayed as any Tenchi character!

Ukinojo92 wrote:How much time would be needed for Tenchi to be reintroduced properly and not as Ai was, a tourist advertisement show.
What do you mean how much time? Could you elaborate? While you’re at it, could you elaborate on “reintroduced properly”? Eleven minutes? Twenty-two minute format? Forty? An hour? A feature-length film? Because for example, despite its longer-than-usual episode format (and the fact it wasn’t a tourist attraction),
War on Geminarnever really made me feel anything emotionally; but in the span of a single episode of Ai–which I needn’t remind anyone here, is only approx. four minutes–on multiple occasions I would go from lighthearted mirth and joy all the way over to manly man tears of sadness. Meant to garner attraction for tourists? Sure. Highly unorthodox, shorter-than-usual episode format? Yup. But if
Ai Tenchi Muyo!isn’t Tenchi done “proper” after all these years (and hurdles the franchise has overcome), I don’t know what is. *steps off soapbox
Just sayin…but anyway folks feel free to sidestep, resume normal traffic flow, etc.
