A few playful jabs at all of us Tenchi fans. Hope people had some laughs, cuz we sure did recording this SOB.

Kudos on the intro, Dagon (or was it Nagon? Go-Nag? Dago?). I was dying from laughter from the get-go, and when it got to “My Planted Trees Can’t Be This Cute” I literally died so you’ll have to let me know how it went from there. XD

    Blaze it.

Akira was a box office bomb at its original 1988 Japanese premiere.

Really? News to me, and contradictory to everything I’ve ever read. If you could please give me a link for citation, or recommend some literature (or recount your time in Japan circa 1988), I would be grateful. I find it personally gratifying to periodically update my cinematic knowledge (here would be great, but if need be PM would work too since I am admittedly getting way off topic).

Anyway, No. 4 on an aggregate rating? To quote Tenchi’s old man, “Well done, TENCHIIII!!”

If he didn’t come out to save Tenchi after GXP, especially OVA 3, then he is not coming out and his works are not going to be translated

After hearing word of a possible OVA 4, I’ve learned never say never with anything Tenchi-related; at any rate, we’re not necessarily talking ‘Okuda will happen’ it’s more like ‘wouldn’t that be cool?’

Also, on a final note, they have been translated. 😉

Day 1: My very first experience with Tenchi?

Monday, July 3rd, 2000 will always be a special date in my book: the day Tenchi Muyo! first appeared on Cartoon Network’s Toonami lineup. Was I there that day? I’d like to say yes, but unfortunately I don’t remember definitively. But I do remember my first experience was shortly after it premiered on U.S. television. Ahhh, memories.

Technically the golden age of anime ended in 1988, when Akira’s theatrical release bombed.

“Bombed” as in didn’t do well financially? Do you mean in the U.S. or elsewhere, where it had a very limited release? Because I do believe, my good sir, Akira did extraordinarily well at the box office in its homeland: practically an overnight success (one of the few that wasn’t a casualty of the aforementioned economic slump). But at any rate, all spot-on, astute points.

To the original question: is it coincidence? I think indeed not, ML. The approach that the folks controlling companies’ purse strings took with original content, listening to pitches, and frankly taking chances directly allowed creative works like Tenchi to happen. It’s scarier for a company to go out on a limb with faith in something new, and safer to adapt something already preexisting (look at U.S. and Japanese industries right now); the potential pitfalls are very real, but when producers actually put financial stock and faith in something that’s truly got a chance, the payoffs can be phenomenal. I wish companies would take some chances now and again, because things seem to have been pretty stagnant lately….

Idk what it is about them–the rarity of it, the fact that it’s Shayla Shayla kind of ‘settling in’ for the evening, clocked out of a hard day’s work of bein a priestess, and/or seeing her more amiable, gentle (dare I say, vulnerable?) side–but ‘oi loikes me some a’ dat twin tails Shayla Shayla a looot. Mmmmhmmmm. 😳 😆

If OVA4 even touches that “-If-” bullshit then I’m super done.

That will definitely soil the franchise until someone with more tact can direct a new series or a sequel to Universe. OKUDA COME FROM THE SHADOWS AND SAVE TENCHI.

OVA 4? Fine, I wanna’ see where this could possibly go from here plot-wise. Ryo-Ohki/Tenchi “litter” of furry kids? Here’s my moderator badge, I’m taking an early retirement. 😆

I actually think a great idea would be something that either instead of, or in addition to, anything else coming down the pike, what you said Marty: it’s Okuda’s turn! Who wouldn’t have fun with that?

To stay on topic, I’ll come back around by saying that as of right now, to my knowledge, we haven’t heard anything supplementary to this fan-fueled social media fervor from AIC officially regarding what exactly is being produced. Will this be complimentary to anything Negishi might announce in the next month around the theatrical screening of TMiL? Is this what he was planning to announce, and consequently he’d be a part of it? Is there anything Ryo-Ohki-related actually going to be animated, or is this another case of tongue-in-cheek Kajishima calling doujins “If” and placing a little question mark within the title and basically…ending every title like a question? With an upward inflection? At the end of every sentence? “Hey guys, OVA 4 is going to be in production(?) Wouldn’t that be…err, I mean, isn’t that cool(?)”

    [BBvideo]http://youtu.be/tqNhEzrWQpY[/BBvideo]

(Not very tactful, you might say? Since when has Kajishima cared about tact? Negishi himself said after requesting and insisting on meeting the man whom he respects on some level after so many years of working on Tenchi, Kajishima didn’t say so much as a word to him: the man basically had to be dragged in by AIC to do a meet-and-greet with a fellow professional, but it was so forced it was akin to a delinquent kid’s resentful, insincere apology after some sort of churlish chicanery.)

I am fully prepared to stick my foot waaay in my own mouth, eat my own words, etc., but here’s Who’s weather forecast: Kajishima’s going to continue the Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki a.k.a. OVA story line in written and illustrated form, at the very least, because he can control that himself; if AIC won’t bite, at least he can keep doing that.

If (a bigger one than Kaji’s) OVA 4 is being produced by AIC, these stipulations will very likely accompany it:

    1. It’s not going to be verbatim what we’ve seen in his doujins thus far, for a myriad of reasons. Granted, if – IF – was only meant to be a treatment/teaser/presentation to AIC, that’s an explanation and excuse for why its content was so scant: but if proceeding to an anime/OVA, there’s got to be a LOT more going on than that (antagonists, plot, etc.).

    AND

    2. As with the franchise in days of yore, OVA will be accompanied by other incarnations such as a continuation of Ai, TMiL 3, and/or a Universe-esque TV adaptation/reboot. If they’re going to go all-in monetarily, they might as well use this multi-pronged approach to try and appease the many different tastes out there.

    OR

Alt 2. OVA 4 won’t be just Kajishima’s very expensive personal playground anymore, and the likes of Negishi and who-knows-else will be brought on to continue Tenchi together in an attempt at a harmonious and coherent continuation of the original continuity.

Will AIC learn from its mistakes, or repeat the recent past? Let’s see!

A part of me will hold out and be stubborn for a while: I’ll believe it when I see it. BUT if it happens, I’m very curious to see where they’re going with it and who is going to be involved with production and in a creative capacity.

Day 24 – Don’t think I’ve ever been bullied for liking anime. Lucky me!

Day 25 – Character I’m like? Idk, I’m sort of like Vash the stampede…not in mad skillz with a six shooter, but I’ll genuinely try to do the right thing because of values instilled by those who have gone before me, even to the point of it being self-detrimental to my own well-being. A little naive, one could argue, but a good ideal to strive for imo. Perhaps if Vash is more like my superego, Wolfwood would be my ego: a good guy at his core, but a little weather-worn from walking the walk, fighting the good fight, etc. etc.

My best days I’d like to think I’m also like Kurama from Yu Yu Hakusho for many hubris-fueled reasons. XD Seriously, that gorgeous hair…..

Day 26 – An anime scene that made me cry? And you want me to only list just one? Hmm…

I’d wager that one in FMA where you all know: “Eddd-wwwaaard” sadface1

Day 27 – Recommend an anime people might not have seen: off the top of my head, the ’90s remake of Bubblegum Crisis, which is Bubblegum Crisis: Tokyo 2040. As someone who normally approaches any sort of re-do/remake with more than a pinch of salt, and who quite enjoyed the original, I must say even though I was attracted for the director behind it (Tenchi director Hayashi!) it’s objectively stellar, an enjoyable watch, a gem of the nineties, and whatever you expect going in, it’s going to be it and a little more of the unexpected sprinkled in.

Day 28 – Do I share my anime interests with anyone? Sure! Friends and family, if it comes up in a relevant discussion.

Day 29 – Favorite character. Ever? That’s like impossible, so I’ll just say…my fav space pirate Ryoko!

Day 30 – What anime has my heart? Come on, now, I think you all know. 😉
