At any rate, I’m liking this “short and sweet” approach thus far. No offense, but after Ash’s adventures going on for (arguably)* too long, the idea of a short OVA that will leave folks wanting more sounds far more appealing to me than the neverendinganime approach (cough one piece).

*but hey, it has been a great internet joke source for many, many years.

    For Matt Miller:

What are you up to nowadays? How did voice acting (as Tenchi) affect you/your other acting endeavors (if at all)?

EDIT: 1. via member thiefalos (who hasn’t gotten around to it, apparently): “which girl do you think Tenchi would/should choose???” (goin for the jugular there lol)

    2. (via me): How’d the whole Homer Simpson-esque “Doh!” come about? (because those of us as Tenchi fans think Tenchi before Simpsons whenever we hear it).

I’m here if you need me.

Take all the time you need for grieving, remembering and even rejoicing with your family for the strong life she lived.

Take all the time you want for reflection and solitude, all the time in the world if need be.

You certainly don’t ever have to express anything to me, but if you ever do, I’m here.

Riiiight, because ova Mihoshi (if I’m not presuming too much) is leaps and bounds above Universe Mihoshi in terms of competence and intellect. 😉

Yeah, yeah, I’m a Ryoko fan boy, and yeah I think I’d like a Tenchi + Ryoko pairing the best, sure (though at times, in certain continuities, I don’t think he’s good enough for her). But yeah, if we’re just picking “which one should I write about?” I’m sure Ryoko and Ayeka have been done plenty of times. Mihoshi or Washu would be excellent because comparatively they’ve been underrepresented.

That’s for “equalizing” things for Miho or Washu fans, and it’s not that I would mind it, but those two aren’t head over heels for Tenchi like Ryoko and Ayeka (Washu likes playing with him, like a “cougar” with its next meal, and Mihoshi it’s more of a young girls’ blooming crush). But who would I personally (even as a Ryoko fan) like to see? And has been comparatively underrepresented? And would likely be a good match for Tenchi? Kiyone Makibi.

Sure, she isn’t head over heels for Tenchi either, but it jives with her personality: she’s a serious type (obviously to be Mihoshi’s “straight man”), organized, not boorish or boisterous…very similar personality type to our leading man. Even though I’m not exactly “Team Kiyone” I could accept, and would even like to see, a pairing of the two (not that you have to, luther).

Re-reading my posts, in an effort to be concise and less verbose, I feel I overlooked a couple important points that I wish to communicate to you FW:

    1. What you’re experiencing is not uncommon amongst authors who craft their own worlds; it’s an immense amount of knowledge you want to get across to others, let alone getting down to the nitty gritty of the narrative. I am only able to offer suggestions because I continue to struggle with such things constantly (I suspect one never outgrows these difficulties entirely).

    2. The difficulty of your task shouldn’t be understated–though “common” amongst writers, it is a tremendous challenge, made up of many smaller challenges. Even the greats struggle with this very topic.

I was reminded of this very fact (and prompted to add this follow-up post) when I happened to read the preface of my edition of Tolkien’s The Silmarillion. Included is an early letter by Tolkien sent to his friend and editor Milton Waldman concerning his attempts to consolidate his multi-layered world of Middle Earth through his stories and what would be his books. An excerpt:

    “My dear Milton,

You asked for a brief sketch of my stuff that is connected with my imaginary world. It is difficult to say anything without saying too much: the attempt to say a few words opens a floodgate of excitement, the egoist and artist at once desires to say how the stuff has grown, what it is like, and what (he thinks) he means or is trying to represent by it all.”

At least it would seem you’re in good company. 😉

Thanks for the start, guys. I was, however, wondering more about how/where to start telling you the story. (I already can play it back in my head like a memory of something I’ve seen; it’s that clear.)

Or maybe I should say world, as the individual stories are not all there is to know…

Right, I think we’re on the same page: I’m sure it’s much more clear in your own head, as the creator, than to anyone of us. So, when you say tell us the story, I’m thinking either an outline of the premise (a “pitch”), or treating us as any other reader/viewer, and as I said, using your character(s) and what they go through as the catalyst through which your world unfolds.

[obviously this is just an example as I am unfamiliar with your work but] say for example your protagonist is admitted into the academy for the first time: when he/she arrives, describe what it looks like with the various tools of storytelling at your disposal; if he/she, at a young age, is hearing about the academy for the first time, have him/her ask someone else (an elder, family member, etc.) about the academy so we learn as they do (think about when Kenshi arrives on Geminar, a world totally unknown to him–as he learns about Sacred Mechanoids and Aho, ultimately it’s a streamlined method to tell us viewers about Sacred Mechanoids/Aho, because upon first viewing it’s all new to everyone except Kajishima).

If, however, you just want to tell us about your concept or particular facets of it, you can really pick anywhere to start: perhaps, as you’ve already begun, explaining how the world itself works, how are its laws of physics similar/different from our own world? define and describe unfamiliar words and concepts, then maybe work up to characters and their roles in their world. It’s up to you what/how much you want to divulge.

p.s. before I forget to say it, good luck with your ideas, I hope you see them to fruition in some form at some point.

As far as Ryo-ohki goes i’m 50/50 on the rebirth thing. In OVA 3 Washu teases Ryoko by telling her that Ryo-ohki will have grandchildren by the time Ryoko gets married thus implying she can procreate (with what or how I won’t say). I still think that the other cabbits are more than likely the Fuku clones that Tarant Shank made in GXP.

I’m guessing clones, but there’s also the angle Dagon mentioned, “the child of Ryo-Ohki” but in that context specifically, the Phoenix aspect implies rebirth, as in not so much offspring as replacement.

I really hope it’s not actually Ryo-Ohki’s offspring with someone…I know she can take humanoid form, but that’d be just weird.
