Cool. Well, in the words of my friend Akawoa, Kenshi really is “an amalgam of the entire Tenchi household,” which lends towards his positive attributes and, unfortunately, some legitimate, fair criticism of him as a character. To get the “bad” out of the way, the criticism some have noted with Kenshi is he appears to have little to no detectable faults. A character has to be flawed to create conflict, fuel drama, allow for development and, most importantly, for you to care about them. Now while I for one cared about Kenshi, and really do like him as a personality, I had to concede this point brought up by fellow fans. To indirectly quote another friend of mine, at no time are you ever really concerned for Kenshi’s safety; he’s a badass right from the get-go, and while I enjoyed seeing him kick butt, at least for me personally looking back it was true, I was never worried for Kenshi in the same way I was for Tenchi or virtually any other protagonist from anything else I’ve ever watched/read in my life.
BUT:The rationalizing for this can be expressed twofold: one, as stated, being the younger brother of Tenchi and growing up with his older “sisters”
andYosho as a trainer…if there was any kid with the right ingredients to add up to being practically a “super teen” I don’t know what else you could ask for. Learning under Yosho, you’d be more than formidable with combat, and cleaning up after Ryoko, you’d get darn good at tidying up rooms! It’s a bit unfortunate that Washu’s “conditioning” was used as a plot device to allow Kenshi to act out the ego-fueled, “wish fulfillment” of many lesser harem anime while at the same time retain his innocence and good-boy charm, but oh well, I suppose having Washu as a nanny wouldprobably mess you up somewhat. Even his minor “flaw” of being obsessed with crystals can be chalked up primarily to growing up with Ryo-Ohki, likely taking crystal form for a toddler’s bemusement. But the second tier of this positive take on Kenshi’s extraordinary abilities stems from points brought up during the cast, as well as by the starter of this thread earlier in chat, and that is that
SKTis very much a series forTenchi fans. Sure, it’s separated enough from the Tenchi continuity and good enough to stand on its own, but to truly get enjoyment out of it, it’s like an inside joke: you have to be “in on it” to “get” it. As such, the reason most fans (including me) enjoyed it and similarly how Kajishima could get away with having a slightly-less-than three dimensional main character (if taking the more negative view) is that we didn’t have our expectations set the same for Kenshi as we did with Tenchi (particularly if its cumulative, e.g. higher expectations for Tenchi in ova3 than ova1 because we were just introduced to Tenchi in ova1). We were just excited to see new characters, new locales and new adventures, and to be fair, that’s what we got (and then some). In my mind, if/when there is another Geminar series, that would be the time to add some much-needed depth to Kenshi and really delve into him as a character (but still allowing him to be a badass every now and then). - August 5, 2013 at 8:53 PM

Interesting this hasn’t come up yet considering our forum, and say what you will about the overall quality of the series, but the opening song is for some reason ridiculously catchy and the images well choreographed and synchronized. [BBvideo 425,350]

I think Tenchi being “The Granddaddy of All Harems” would make this a valid topic,
at some pointin the future when we’ve exhausted the other main avenues of discussion (series, spin-offs, etc.) Also, since I’ve learned you’re an advocate of it, how about one for GXP? (can’t believe we haven’t suggested that yet).

So much cool stuff! Shinichiro Watanabe will be there?! Lawdy I can’t image the line! & Yoko’s performance would be so awesome if we’re able to make it (which, if it’s on Sunday, well I’m not holding my breath). I just want to go wherever the gang takes me. Just getting there (& back) will be reward enough for me. EDIT: Follow up question, are we thinking about doing a live Tenchicast while many of us will be conveniently in the same place? I heard talk of Photon (if we watch the series while we’re there) & there’s also the slight possibility if something Tenchi/Geminar related is announced, we could have a discussion about it immediately, & maybe throw in something pertaining to Miss Saxton if any of us get to meet her quick/sign stuff.

Tough, but I’d lean OVA Yosho, solely because he has youth on his side (faker! jk) What if Yosho had landed somewhere else on planet Earth, other than Japan? Would he have assumed the cover of a religious figure to fit his location? (A Catholic priest, as seen in “Time & Space Adventures” episode of
Universe? Or the whole multiple wives thing could have fit with certain sects of Mormonism, no? I kid, I don’t mean to be offensive) Though OVA particularly suggests that Japanese culture is an offshoot of the “superior” Jurain culture, thus making this scenario all but unimaginable, perhaps in
Universecontinuity it could at least be feasible solely in the realm of speculation. Wonder what Tenchi’s name would have been if Yosho hadn’t married into a Japanese family?

There’s not really much of a continuity between the casts, except for say the Geminar one.
Just think for once… no mic problems lol…

Ohhhhhh I get it (duh!) doing it when we’re literally all in the same place,
veryfresh in our minds (viewing it right there). It would be unique in that respect. Though, if there are others not present at the con that want to be in on it, we would want to work around that (maybe, just once, they could record their lines separately and insert them in later?) but you’re right JG, we should take advantage of our meeting, as it will be a rarity.

Good idea. Though, we’ve already kind of advertised Pretty Sammy as being next on the chop block, and we likely want to space things out a bit, but if we have stuff to report about the con (afterwards) in a timely manner, we might want to do a special about it next, even before Pretty Sammy (?) idk where that would leave Photon (which will be a great topic for a cast).

ohdearplz Good question. I guess all the girls pitched in to make it? Perhaps Nobuyuki, being the genius architect he is, had the designs stowed away for years, just waiting for the right conditions to be met!
